What stood out in the photo's to me.......

Jake Spencer has complete control of almost every contest with Mark Jamar.

Is Jake Spencer set for a break out year (seems unlikely I know) or is Jamar in decline?

It wasn't the case at training, when contesting Jamar more than held his own. Some parts of this exercise were also set up that one player would try a certain technique of rolling around the back of the other, so there was some genuine contesting but more exercise if that makes sense.

Pedersen really isn't that tall is he? Spencil looked to be accounting for him pretty comfortably.

Thanks Rjay - that makes sense.

But also note, Jakes hand is consistently about 10 cm higher in the ruck contests (doesn't help if you don't hit it to advantage I know - and that is where Jamar has it in spades over Spencer). But first hand to the ball up gets the chance to hit to advantage. Could you say who got more of the hitouts?

In the ruck work, Spencer was good, Jamar was still the better player but around the ground Spencer was fairly average, still looked lost at times.

I went down yesterday, took a few hundred pictures and about 10 minutes of video of the match simulation. I'll clean it all up and upload it tonight.

Looks like he should be back at school getting ready for year 10!!!

The tackling exercise was done well, very good intensity after a bit of a spray.

Davey moved well, threaded the needle on most of his kicks in the match simulation. Dawes presented well, but was disappointed he didn't hold on to a few I expected him too. Strauss looked very lively, as did Rodan, Toumpas and Sylvia did some good things.

Tom Mac spoiled everything that came his way, manned up on Dawes.

Dunn looks soiled and I think he'll have a very good year.

When he and Clark were walking the boundary, purely from a having a presence point of view you would have thought Clark was the captain.

Trengove may tick a lot of boxes on what it takes to be a leader, but when push comes to shove is he the captain who can lift his team over the line?

I would say 'how' one plays is more important.

And, yes, if they are not playing - 'how' they play is rather moot.

FWIW I was 1 of the 100 or so people there yesterday (from 9 till 12'ish).

It's difficult to quantify what I saw against other training sessions as i haven’t been to one for 4'ish years.

So all I really have a note was on my own perspective coupled with a dose of assumptions. For those who have been more please feel free to add to my thoughts.

I can agree with most note about players attributes etc etc but the biggest thing I left yesterday with was around the full match simulation stuff early on. There was some eye rolling and general cynicism between my dad and another gent watching that we are in for another scrappy/poor year. Later as we were leaving there was a full ground transition drill which I thought the ball hardly touched the ground and the skills in general were very good (side note, was impressed how hard Watts would push back for the drill restart, good practice as a back getting back?). This has all lead me to the conclusion the earlier full ground match sim is as much if not more (considering it directly followed the tackling drill) for pressure acts (tackling / structures / etc) than ball movement. With this second side of the coin thought in mind, if the pressure on display in the full ground match is anything to go by, we will be a much harder team to score against this year which is half the battle.

Lastly, a note re rucks. I don’t recall in the match sim work any actual ruck contests, most of it was like shadow boxing with he winner predefined by Craig. So I am a little confused by earlier comments as to who is the better?

And the match sim was only at about 80% of match day intensity. And I agree on the ruck situation. I say no genuine contested ball up or throw in situations. Having said that Jamar is under some pressure to hold his spot because as much as anything Spencer is more competitive around the ground.

I guess I thought he was a bit taller. I realise Watts is no midget but was surprised at the photo of them standing side by side.

Even just from a photo you can see that is a textbook kicking action and ball drop.

Compare that with a poor ball drop like Scully:

Pederson is built like a wall and really strong, and he has a good jump, but also is the banging body type of ruckman, I can see him taking the ruck up forward or being third man up, the ruck is one place where we are looking really good, if big Maxy can get up and running we will be looking even better...

.it wouldn't even surprise me to see Jamar, Spencer, Pederson and Fitzpatrick all in the same team at one stage during the NAB Cup to see what it looks like rotating them through the ruck duties and having them up forward

I loved the photos and couldn't help but notice there were NO STICK INSECTS, and did Jonesy get a free for the elbow to the neck from coach Craig. Great stuff.
