Hi guys and girls,

This is not to do with football as such but I am excited to be able to watch my beloved Dees every week! I'm moving to Melbourne with my fiance in January and wanted to see if anyone on here had any tips on good areas to live, or maybe even if there are rental agents on here? She will be working at The Alfred hospital so we were thinking around the South Yarra area.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Melbourne a pretty great place to live.

I would use the web sites like RealEstate .com. Where you live will depend a lot on your budget.

The Alfred is really in prime real estate land to the east is Prahran which is a mix of very affluent and trendy areas and some more affordable properties. To the west is St Kilda proper and South Melbourne which is pretty pricey as well. North - dont go there unless your girl friend is a surgeon. The hospital is pretty close to Prahran station and well served by trams coming from the South and East so depending on budget you might look to property near to the Sandringham rail line or out to Caulfield for trams. Its been a long time since I did research on this sort of things but St Kilda east might be an option - as I recall very high proportion of single women although in your case where you are BYO that wont necessarily be a key aspect. Good luck and again welcome.

Clifton Hill, where the train lines converge and often run express to Jolimont... ;-)

I used to work at The Alfred and live in Brunswick, which is a rad area, but will require a fair bit of travel for you.

Clifton Hill is a great idea, very easy to go up Hoddle straight to the Alfred and to the MCG :)

Yep any of the suburbs from Clifton Hill along Hoddle Street well serviced by the Elsternwick bus.

Vic Park, Abbotsford, Richmond, Cremorne, South Yarra, Prahran, Windsor, St.Kilda.

Huge amount of apartments going up in Abbotsford at the moment, nearing completion.

Come out west. The western suburbs are great. No need for the perfectly cut lawn and if your car catches on fire you can leave it on the street. It's a modern garden decoration. You can wear footy jumpers every day of the week and have great access to such iconic fashion designers as fubu and stussy.

Elwood.

I've lived in Box Hill, Moonee Ponds, Preston, Reservoir, Blackburn South, Williamstown, Windsor, Elwood, St Kilda (East, West, and Standard), Forest Hill, North Balwyn, and North Fitzroy... Elwood is surprisingly quiet and affordable given it's location. It has great quality cafes, restaurants, shops, is close to the beach as well as the city, and is the right side of Punt Rd so that you wont be dealing with the main flow of traffic during peak hours.

South Yarra is very expensive and extremely awkward to travel within. Prahran is far too busy. Windsor is a fave of mine but you won't get much quiet. St Kilda will always feel like home to me, but it's quite overpriced these days. Elwood is definitely my recommendation for your situation.

realestate.com.au is your best place to search. domain.com.au and realestateview.com.au are ok, but only to extend your search a little.

Not at the moment WYL but we probably have been! I'm in Fitzroy North currently, but if it was purely up to me I'd be back around Elwood/St Kilda way!

South Yarra between the parks Walk acrosss Fawkner Park to the Alfred and walk through the Domain or Botanical Gardens to the G. Absolutely perfect. My wife also at Alfred.

Pricey I know but you wont lose money buying there and you can walk to CBD if necessary. I wouldnt want to face Hoddle St twice a day if I didnt have to

There is only one place to live in Melbourne and that is 3002 (East Melbourne). It is a 5 minute walk to the "G" to watch the mighty Dees and a 10 minute walk to Gosch's Paddock if you are a die-hard. Also, the Hoddle Street bus takes you straight to the Alfred!

Ha! Well as long as you don't drive! I meant the train straight up that way or bike!!!

Or, catch the bus and read a good (long) book.

What a silly thing to say.

South of the Yarra is a great place to live. Lots of services and resources.

Lived in Toorak just on the border of South Yarra for about 6 months - paid $330 a week for a spacious one bedroom apartment with view of the city, secure carpack and entrance, great, classic building.

I would suggest:

Richmond

Collingwood

East Melbourne

Prahran

South Yarra

Glen Iris
