If you are following the draft on the afl website there wasnt even a picture of him. Did a pre season at the dogs last year apparently. Venom denham will bag us again for picking up a 25 yr old.

Neeld would like the fact he worked on his tackling and defensive pressure , no surprises we picked him up

I played 5 yrs with him at Sth Croydon, good young fella who is a smooth mover with tidy skills. Needs to work on endurance but worth a crack.

Will play half forward / wing.

Good kid with a smart head on his shoulders, from a great family.

Wish him all the best.

I actually mentioned him a few times on Demonland as a player we have been looking at all yr.

He's 25, from Box Hill evidently. Plenty of VFL watchers including yourself Jack, I thought you could tell us about him!

He did play for Box Hill Hawks against Casey Scorpions in Round 8 but I can't say I have any recollection of him from that game. I do have that game recorded so I'll have a look over the next couple of days.

Another what if player.

What if we put him into casey and taught him our game plan?

See if he can improve on his basic defensive skills.

If not end of 2014 see ya later sunshine.

Had some good games for the Hawks in the midfield.

"Grimes is Great" on Demonland said we were looking at Jones.

Looks solid and neat with an eye for it in close.

And, as we have come to expect this off-season - looks like he can play some tough footy.

Saw Matt Jones play for Box Hill in 2012. Good pace, runs wing, half back. Thought he needs muscle ....and a rookie at best .

Mature 25 yo ...not 20 as per Mfc website earlier tonight.

I know nothing about Matt but as a Dees lover welcome aboard Matt and best of luck to you

James Magner ( and for that matter Couch) would be entitled to be a bit peeved at this selection. Languishing on the Rookie list after 17 or 18 senior games last year while selections like this one are placed ahead of him. Would in all liklihood have been available as a rookie. Surprising selection IMHO, let's hope it's right, otherwise more fodder for the critics

I can understand our other choices, but this one is totally bizarre. Rookie selection at best I would have thought.

Maybe the club thinks he is a better option than Magner, maybe they didn't think he would be around at the RD.

When Sellar was taken last year did we see it as a rejection of Nicholson?

We kept Magner on the RL because we are trying to maximise our ability to take talent in this draft.

And quite frankly, to state the bleeding obvious, we won't know whether we would be better off or not for a while yet.

Analysing late picks at the draft is frought in my opinion. Even more so than early picks.

Spot on. It is not as simple as some make it out to be. Perhaps we were keen on him but knew there was another club waiting to pounce etc. All we can do is welcome him to the club, wish hom the best, and support him.

The key point is - Rookies can't play unless they dissplace someone. They also earn less. Magner would be entitled to be pi**ed off.

Would he?

I don't see how.

They don't have to be.

We can, and should, be paying him a wage similar to any second year player.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
