WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - DEAN KENT

Featured Replies

Agree, some say he was unlucky not to be picked for the WA under 18 side. If he was picked and displayed some kinda form he may have gone a lot higher. He has a great build for the game and likes to take the game on (lkg at his highlights). He has alot more upside as Toumpas and Viney are expected to play at the elite level, while Kent could be the icing on the cake with 3 top/good midfielders coming out of this draft.

As has been said, I have a good feeling about this guy too

Yes. I like a mid with Muscles and a booming left foot. Will be alongside Viney and Toumpas IMO.

And Nathan Jones.

Has anyone seen him without his footy gear on?

Is there a cape, speedos outside his pants, and a big S on his front?

"Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings at a single bound"

HELLO DEMONOIDS!

An absolute crackerjack here. I would rank him alongside Viney in the top 5 picks in the draft. I'm going out on a limb here. I feel we've got ourselves 2 ready made A graders (with a few pre seasons of course) and a potential top 4 finals quality duo here in Kent and Viney (subject to major injury issues....touch wood).

With Toumpas as a running outside link with class delivery inside to the mids (off half back) and delivering decent i50s (a la Burgoyne) when pushing forward, i think we'll be playing bottom 8 finals by 2014. Top 4 Finals birth by 2015 and a shot at the flag....on 2 conditions......

1. Neild can actually teach a base line minimum standard of decent AFL standard disposal skills

2. We find a class small forward who can feed off the tall forwards hard work and who can kick multiple goals and pressure/tackle well going the other way.

Im taking that you have never watched Kent play or in retrospect anyone in the draft play but watched his highlights and liked them because he has a nice long kick and is quite fast. Also a top 5 pick in the draft for some reason cannot make the WA national team and is drafted at pick 48. Have u ever seen him play?

I don't think he'll be as good as a top 5 pick in the draft and I've only seen his highlights but I like the way he's done whatever it takes to make sure he's given himself every chance to get selected; the fact that he's travelled 200ks a couple of times a week to training would indicate he's prepared to go the extra yard. Sometimes you see a player and you just like the way he goes about it; I had the same feeling about Tommy Mac as I do about Dean

As do I and I think hes every chance of being a solid or if we are lucky very good midfielder for the dees but the fact that the previous poster believed that he was a genuine top five pick is just ludicrous.

Yeah this is the bloke who won the B&F for the colts this year. It seems everyone bar the selectors ( and possibly yourself) for that team was going WTF!?

Moving forward into next year, I really think Kent and Taggert will be serious rivals for a spot in the 22.

I may be wrong but I think I read somewhere that he was either injured or recovering from illness that ruled him out.

I think he will put up a fight for a spot in the best 22, but that makes him no superstar. For god sake Joel Mcdonald usually has a spot in the 22.

He shouldn't need too much gym work (he's the right side of 80kg)

but can run like a whippet so its not like he's carrying too many skin folds.

To me it seems like all he needs is the endurance base...he should develop

nicely given the current training ethos

Boyd © was a rookie, as was James McDonald ©, Brett Kirk ©, Brad Sewell, Mark Johnson (B&F/flag), Andrew Carrazzo, Nathan Foley, Clinton Young, Matt Priddis, Michael Barlow, Ben Howlett...

I only included Rookie mids, but obviously I could have mentioned Sandilands, Cox, Jolly, Mumford, or players like Toovey, Maxwell ©, Dalhaus, Steven Milne, etc. etc.

Then there are 40+ picks like (mids only):

Andrew Swallow (C - 43), Dom Cassisi (C - 50), Daniel Cross (56), Adam Selwood (53), Dane Swan (58), Kade Simpson (45), Rory Sloane (44).

That said, in the main you are correct. Although, as you'd agree, there are a number of players picked from no. 40 in the ND right through to the RD that have become fine players and many who ultimately captained their club.

I like what I've briefly seen of Kent (48). Big arse, very strong core, really good speed, hard at it, and excellent left foot kick. There's just something about the big Kent that I like. And it's no mean feat to be named best player in the WAFL under 18 colts.

I just have a feeling about this guy.

Late picks, T Mcdonald, Mckenzie, Jamar, Nicholson, J Mcdonald, Woewodin, Magner, Jolly

Easy on rusty there mitch: let the guy fantasise, like many of us few remaining optimists here do every preseason.

And, FWIW, I hope that he is right and you are wrong, and I hope that you hope you are wrong too :-)

Forgive me me not seeing the relationship between my post and you insinuating I see him as a superstar.

You're hardly comparing apples with Joel Mac. Lost me again.

How's Taggert's pre-season going? There's not been that much reported about his progress recently.

What a strange post. Who is saying that a recently drafted 18 year old that is yet to play a game is a "superstar" ?

No-one knows what he'll become.

Ron, I'm relying on the training reports. I made that comment due to the similarities in playing style and potential role and to be honest a fair bit of it is assumption on my behalf.

Apparently me.

Rusty Nails actually, he said that Kent was a ready made A grader. I would like to but I really cant agree.

Well Rusty doesn't speak for everyone on this board. Reply accordingly mate.

I agree. Seem to be some big raps on him, but I've not really seen him back it up just yet.

Evans is the other one I think could explode if he gets his body right.

Yep. Had a fairly serious virus and although he was back and playing in the month prior to selection for the carnival, it took him quite a while to fully recover and get back to his best so he didn't get the call up.

Still won the colts B&F though so I don't understand him not getting a run.

im so sorry, mate.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
