Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but why would we promote Evans to the primary list over Magner?

I see that Evans has potential, but why him over a bloke that slotted straight into AFL footy and played a heap of games for us? Evans cannot get his body right, other players were given the arse recently for that, players I would suggest that showed more for us than what at this stage Evans ever will - Pettard was a very, very handy player when fit.

What's the deal?

How many games have you seen Evans play?

evans had been on the rookie list for the max 2 years, so like stylus said, it was either promote or delist. I agree that Magner well and truely deserves to be on the seniors list but i guess he'll have to wait till next season or until someone is put on the long term injury list.

I agree with the others, but I also think Evans has more upside. He's fast, thinks quickly and spreads really well. He needs to work on his kicking when he's at pace, like Magner, but I reckon there's a bit to work with. I just reckon he's a little classier than the robotic Magner. I admire Magner greatly, as he has a red hot crack, but you can almost see him thinking when he has the ball. Evans is a more natural footballer, but without the grunt.

Agree with Ben-Hur. With the imminent injection of high-end talent in to our midfield, those on the fringes are going to need something more than 'grunt' to justify a spot on the list. That's where Evan's pace comes to the fore. He's got Magner well covered for speed and has shown he can win his own footy. He gets the nod.

Good points made that clarify it, my intention was not to talk down Evans so much as illustrate that his record is shaded by Magner, so it is odd that he got the spot. That and his issues with injury. I hope he comes good and plays some great footy

If Evans can get his body right, he could be a very good player. CS told me at a Debt Demolition Dinner last year that the club rates him pretty highly.

Evans was given a 'stay on the RL and we promise you a PL spot' deal at towards the end of 2011.

So do I. I have had him last year ( unfortunately injured ) and again this year as my boy to watch.

I could see him fitting into our midfield, unlike Magner, who I see at best as a fill in when there are a lot of injuries.

I really want you to be wrong about Magner.

I can see a role for him but he needs to be versatile and make better decisions under pressure. Kick and hope isn't what Sewell (he is the one he should model his game on) does.

Magner will get promoted in March, when AFL alllow club to promote one rookie to the primary list without a player going to injured reserve

So true. There is something about Magner which I really like, most likely the under dog thing.

He has the body, and the drive - I hope he works on his skills, and as you mentioned, versatility more.

You will note that Evans along with quite a few players has been given a 1 yr contract, if his back, form, footy smarts etc don't match up then trade or goodbye next year......he was very positive when I spoke to him on Wednesday....just doesn't and isn't allowed to rush rehab....

are you saying Bailey and the like made this promise, rpfc?

Neeld was appointed early in the finals series in 2011. Bailey was sacked with 5? games to go.

Agree.

I understand MFC made an undertaking last year re Evans about upgrading him. It was made at the time lists were being finalised. So relax this is not another reason to beat Bailey!

FWIW, I am not that thrilled with Magner and his admirable grunt does not cover his lack of AFL nous and skills.

And if they had have delisted Evans at the end of this year why cant they re rookie him

Yeah, it's a pre-Neeld agreement.

It's no big deal. Just meant it was paramount to get Gysberts and Morton out so that we didn't have to sacrifice a Jetta or Davis because of a deal sign a great deal of time ago.

Magner is not an AFL player IMO. Just too slow. If he's getting regular games this year it means we are in trouble.

Evans has more upside from what I've seen of him.

Speed kills.
