We have more than Watts but unfortunately we have some shockers

e.g. Bail and McKenzie who tend to negate the better kicks.

If you're counting Toumpas, add Taggert to your list. And Strauss (based on U18 from, like Toumpas).

Toumpas is a far better kick than Scully.

He can play inside and out, wins contested footy and makes really good decisions, so for the life of me I can't see how anyone would contemplate comparing him to Morton.

We lack midfield class and pace. He has both. It's a no brainer.

Can also mark overhead and has 2 years at senior level under his belt which he wouldn't have played if he was scared of the contest or not strong enough.

Some posters have made the odd Scully reference when discussing Toumpas in various threads, which is why I brought him up.

Toumpas is considered an elite kick. Name our elite kicks ?

Davey - once upon a time), Clark, Dunn's not bad....

With Straussy's kicking ability and run, id love to see him tried at half forward wing, where he can use the ball, and pinpoint passes to our forwards.

Would that be tanking????????

Would that be tanking????????

We would need to inform the AFL and get clarification in writing just to be sure.

So with Davey washed up, Clark not a mid, Dunn is a good field kick????, Strauss cusp best 22 (though hopefully making steps). I think we can agree we need better kicks.

Why isnt Colin running

He sure needs a better tank and should be working hard now if not injured.

Good point BH, we need better kicking. I'll say Watts, Sylvia, Clark, Dunn (accurate long distance) maybe Tapscott and... [Davey no more, plus he won't get a game it seems]

Strauss has the reputation of being a great kick - and he appears to have a good technique - but under AFL pressure I'm not yet convinced he is. There hasn't been anything elite about his kicking in his AFL career to date

Getting back to training. It seems the club is focusing on repeat runs/sprints this pre-season. I hope Mission is working on our speed now that a base (endurance) has been acheived by the players completing a lengthy training period that included players training hard throughout the 2012 season.

I went to one training session last season and the focus seemed to be endurance only. BH can you confirm this as you have been to alot of sessions?

Everything has been elite about his kicking.

It's his vision and decision-making that need work.

And that is improving.

When Viney was asked a few weeks ago on radio who was the one player that he hoped would be available at the Dees first pick he named Toumpas. He's in a far better position to judge than anyone who posts on here.

Ah, we can save ourselves a fortune that we're obviously wasting on recruitment. Just ask the draftees!

He may well be an "elite kick" but he will need to get more of it pretty early in 2013 as there are others competing for his spot. But, yes, if he can get the pill then wing may not be a bad option, depending of course on who else is available.

We don't use that word at MFC - Ms Wilson will latch onto it and unleash her vile bilious tirades once more.

They may be referring to Todd not Jack.

You don't think fellow players know who the good ones are ?

No, you probably don't.

Not possible to post without taking a swipe at someone?

Shame.

You mean except for his 83% disposal efficiency, the highest in the team, both this year and last year?

I would say anything over 80% in regards to disposal efficiency is in the elite category.

The issue of skills when exhausted was raised earlier in this thread. Let's put a perspective on the whole skills issue.

First, get the skills perfect.

Second, get the skills perfect under pressure.

Third, get the skills perfect under pressure and when exhausted.

Why this order - because in most cases if the skills are perfect in the first place, the other two cases won't occur!

Also interesting to note the comments on endurance running - OK, but just remember that most football running is sprint followed by sprint etc, as I think someone pointed out.

No, these are not negative comments, just something to think about - I'm guessing Shannon Byrnes knows a bit about this area.

Misson's long game, not going down the Essendon path to fast track what can't be fast tracked.

Has there been a change in this pre seasons focus, or an added focus with repeat sprints rjay? or is the same as last season? The club has talked about adding layers to what was learnt last season, I'm hoping to get feedback from anyone who knows.

They've been doing a lot of repeat sprints, but they did that last year too.

I'm not qualified to know if there's a discernible difference between this year and last. I suspect there's not, but they're just doing everything better - guessing.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.
