Caroline Wilson's descent into gutter journalism

Featured Replies

Caroline is very spot on with her facts, as you would expect from a professional journalist. It was a heroic effort for Kane Cornes to win this years best and fairest with Port Adelaide...considering he was sacked last year.

Port swings axe on Kane Cornes

You should probably take some of your own advice and check facts - start by checking the date of the article.

I just hope the board learns from this and stops making the coaches tank.

I'm sick of watching us lose.

Here's a conspiracy theory for you*:

A. The AFL finally reach tipping point on the issue of tanking. Under pressure from the state and federal governments (due to gambling implications), they launch a genuinely thorough investigation. MFC are the scapegoat.

B. The AFL intentionally undermines its own investigation by leaking explosive information to the press.

C. The press report this information, prejudicing the AFL's investigation.

D. The AFL hands down a heavy handed punishment, including massive fines and loss of first round draft picks for two years. The AFL is widely applauded for this action in the press.

E. MFC takes the AFL to court, where the prejudiced evidence and flimsy definition of tanking makes it relatively easy to overturn the AFL's sactions.

F. The AFL decides not to appeal, stating that they respect the court's decision but also warning all clubs that such actions will not be tolerated in the future. The AFL is again widely applauded in the press.

G. MFC isn't fined and its draft picks are reinstated. The AFL continues to provide funding to financially vulnerable teams and is happy that MFC isn't placed in further financial peril.

H. MFC gains an unintended side effect of the saga, which is a galvanised supporter base and focussed playing list.

Based on the way Caro covered Schwab at the start of last year, today's sliming has got at least two re-writes to come.

Anyone can READ the forums

The real story of this Wilson driven malarkie goes way back to when a young Cam Schwab was working late in to the night at Punt Rd and had to give an interview to the new footy girl for the Age.

lets just say things got more "revealing" than Cam was intending.

He has never been able to talk to her since but she keeps calling

Source:"The Truth"

Aaarh.......... I reckon you've got it

Something personal has been driving her relentless pursuit of Cameron Schwab .Interesting to see if she retires shortly after he goes

Looks like she is going to prove that the pen is mightier than the sword!.

Umm. I think thr point was that in 2011 she said Kane was sacked. Yet in 2012 he won the best and fairest for Port Adelaide. Eitherway, the silver lining in all this is that the club will come out stronger as a unit just like Melbourne Storm.

Wow... Id almost buy that.

But then i like a good story.

Strangely though you can find substance for ALL of that.

Interesting take :)

Not saying its the case but it overlays the situation very neatly .

Might the basis of a good telemovie - "The Journo and the CEO"

I used to work for Freo as part of its interstate support staff when CC was coach (n.b. always been a Melbourne supporter even then) - all i'll say is all the Freo people were lovely and had a time for a chat, everyone!! - except CC - never bothered to even look at me in the face once. I thought that was poor form and I don't think much of him as a result.

I beg to differ. CC has always stopped for a chat and a laugh. I have always found him to be willing to talk to anyone - maybe his downfall.

Not you Wilson.

Narrow Caro .

It's been a confronting week on the forum for me. Every time I log in there's a new thread with the word 'Wilson' in it.

Is Glen Close avail ? Shed have this part down pat !!

I agree here he has always been good for a chat and a joke ., never been a problem for him to stop and talk.

Agree. I consider myself a mate of Chris's and I feel very sorry for him. None of this has anything to do with personal gain but rather gain for our club. He is copping sh-t and a lot of it unfairly. I will not cut and run. He has my support and remains my mate no matter what the outcome.

Wilson or VM ( Vendetta Mouthpiece) has lost me forever, with her single minded attempt to enact revenge on Cameron Schwab.

Wouldn't be surprised.. I'm just amazed at how a few comments from a rat moron on some inconspicuous football talk show on foxtel has managed to gain so much traction.

It almost seems staged.

WTF was Brock doing on OTC... him of all people? They were looking to squeeze something out of him. Something to set off an investigation.

Who produces OTc, what links to the club if any?

This is sounding like a family Feud "Wilsons v Schwabs"

Beverley Hills style.

Up through the ground came a bubbling crude. "Caro" that is.

I was a bit angry and I was harsh, so have deleted my comment.

However, you do realise that attacking Wilson for her "shoddy and pathetic journalism" can be seen as a personal insult too?

In a comment to KB 403 last week, Greg Swan said (after KB mentioned tanking) that Brock was a last minute replacement for an un-named player. Really got the impression that everyone at Carton were surprised with Brocks comments and were not expecting it.

yes. It's a personal insult to read it.

Absolutely, it can.

But I think it's fair to say there's a difference between insulting her intelligence or professionalism, or quality of work, and her personal appearance, which has nothing to do with anything.

Watching that footy show clip put a smile on my face.

If I take my MFC glasses off, I feel the original few articles she wrote on this were fair and justified. Caro was relating info passed on by sources and she was right not to name them. Any good journo would tell you that you keep your sources confidential. A lot of what was written as well seem way too detailed to just pass off as he said/she said. Today's article however reeked of a vendetta against the MFC. You could just see the poison dripping from her pen.

The fact that she discounted the system that the AFL set up for compensation picks and the fact that other clubs were probably doing the same as the MFC was truly baffling. I don't think that it should leave the MFC guilt free in this scenario but surely it should be taken into account in whatever final judgement the AFL passes against the club IF it is found guilty.

The second shocking thing was that she was prepared to find us guilty right then and there. That to me shows that she is thinking with her heart, not her head or she feels the case is so overwhelming that she can speak with impunity. I think the arrogance and preachy tone of the piece was quite off putting. However her comeuppance may still yet come as she has left herself and her employer exposed to potential lawsuits and litigation.

The third thing that struck me was that she was almost wishing openly that the entire club cops a whack despite her assertion that there were people within it who were opposed to the strategy. That if, and I repeat IF, the club is guilty that should be taken into account. Unfortunately, Caro's blind rage against the club blinds her to the possibility that this would be taken into account if a penalty is handed down.

I always tried to give Caro the benefit of the doubt and I think occasionally that she is unfairly maligned because of her gender. People sometimes describe her in terms that a male journalist would not cop and it can reek a little of misogyny. However, for the time being, I can't criticize her enough. I now have a lot more respect for James Brayshaw as he has been copping it around the ears from her for nearly 3 years and he has remained incredibly measured in the face of her vitriol. For a guide on how to handle Caro, take a look at his Footy Classified interview from a while back. He never raised his voice, just recited the facts back to her calmly and called her out when she said things that were clearly untrue or if she had cherry picked certain parts of the truth to make him look bad.

What makes you think it wasn't staged?

irrespective this was certainly staged. Just doubt hoon head realised it !!!

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
