I believe GWS CANNOT take free agents off us, after already signing Scully, not 100% guaranteed, but thought this was the case (same as GC cant take free agents from Geelong, Lions, Crows ect)

I believe that they can. They can't take uncontracted players who are not free agents though e.g. they can take Dunn but they can't take Sellar.

Yeah, GWS took Davis, but can still take Tippett via PSD. I imagine no FAs are off limits to them either.

They simply can't sign a player who is OOC but not a FA, without them going in the PSD.

It's a flaw in the rules they drew up.

And I can't see GWS being interested in Gysberts & 20, HT.

The thing with their list is the need for economy of talent - they have to squash as much talent into each player on the list, as it will need to be consolidated in later years.

Spots will be scarce.

Rather than pick for later pick plus player, even if they end up with a net gain, they would prefer pick 12 & 13 for pick 5, for instance.

I think they are angling at Port's earlier pick, as PA need to cram a lot of quality players onto their list.

Dunn is in Contract negotiations.

I remember back in September when it was announced 11 players were OOC that,

contract negotiations on these players wouldn't start until Oct. 16th.

So I guess now we will start to find out who is staying.

And going by who is in rehab. and times they are due to come back into training.

Morton is with us. ..... Damn

Bennell

Bartram

So they wouldn't be spending money on them if they weren't hanging around.

Despite my wishful thinking, 20 would be used on Dawes unless he decides to reconsider and stay. Even if we entered the draft with 20, Membrey should be taken earlier. I think he'll be a find wherever he goes.

It's not a bad ploy by GWS, and it's all in the name of receiving value. They can afford to do it with 25 odd first round draft picks in their keeping. And if they gain a quality player in return for one of the picks it will help them no end.

So what's behind this Farren Ray no certainty to leave St Kilda?

It could mean exactly what the article says but it could also mean the manager's fishing for more money for his client.

Could also mean St Kilda will only let him go if they need salary cap room. Which may happen if they can lure Mitch Brown from WCE (although you'd think that would happen as a straight swap for Jason Cripps who wants to go from St Kilda to WCE).

GWS putting all picks bar no.1 on the table:

What's our best offer for pick 2?

Pick 4 + Sylvia? I know that probably is too much - or too little depending on your view - but I can't think of anything that isn't way over or way under. Is Toumpas good enough to pay Wines and Sylvia?

Thanks for the thoughtful contribution.

Sylvia for a 2 pick upgrade imo is well overs, when Sylvia showed alot in the second half of the year, got praise form Neeld for turning it around during this time also. And is imo a top 10 player at our club

Who says we'll get Wines? My mail is that Whitfield, Toumpas and Wines will go in the first three.

GWS will trade a ruckman in and won't draft one is the thinking. I'm surprised but it's a very educated view.

That WAS a thoughtful contribution. He was being nice, im sure he could have expanded but was being "thoughtful"

I really don't think there's much to add to what I said. At this stage, Toumpas is not better than Wines + Sylvia. While it's likely that GWS will take Toumpas in the top 3, there is a chance that he could slide to our pick anyway. Regardless, I'm happy with Wines and Sylvia.

I'd do Sylvia and Morton for Pick 2.

Nobody says that, it was just an assumption - I don't see how you can discuss this without making some kind of assumption. If GWS intend on taking Wines instead of Grundy then they probably wouldn't be interested in the deal I proposed as they'd end up with one fewer gun midfielders than they intended to take. That's a lot different a proposition to choosing between Toumpas and Wines which I had them as doing anyway.

Given the only player of the three that I've seen play is Sylvia and he's flaky, inconsistent and arguably lazy, I don't see what I could possibly learn from "no". I also didn't see a viable alternate suggestion.

I just took the inference was the inclusion of Hi-Ho gave that particular scenario great imbalance. After all info was fed into a computer...it said NO

Would your really do that? i only think there are 2 outstanding mids in this draft. the rest can have a tarp thrown over them

Sure would. I would see it as a direct swap from Watts for Hogan.

Hogan being the player that we always had hoped Watts would become.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
