Why is it a massive loss? He is a third up defender who cant play on the gorillas or on a leading forward. His position in our B & F says more about our year than his performance. I would have Frawley, T-Mac, Sellar ahead of him for true tall defenders. Great third man up but that is all. Happy if he stayed but dont mind if he goes.

I am concerned that we are being mentioned in connection to every single name except Goddard, that has been rumoured so far. I hope it is just the managers. Some names mentioned have left me bewildered.

I would be happy to get a couple of good mids like Wellingham and maybe Stevens in trades and then a few more including JV, Toumpas and maybe MacRae in the draft. A couple of FA's on top of that plus the rest of our drafting would see a qantum change in the list.

Whilst I think Rivers adds good value to the side, he's not the type of player I am concerned about losing.

With McDonald, Frawley, Garland and Sellar all on our list, we have KPDs, and Rivers' role amongst them was to play third man up more than anything. We should be more than fine without him.

It seems to me that this year represents a chance to gain high draft picks from players who would individually not yield these picks. Say Rivers and Moloney leave, the total points from these two may sum to a end of first round pick or second round pick where as previously wr could never bundle them up like this. I know if we bring in players the points system will be used to balance the ledger, but I think there is real opportunity to capitalize on this.

Player development of defenders has been really good for the MFC since 08 and I attribute some of that to young players being around quality players and leaders like Jared. His position in our B&F says he had a good year - which he did. No need to complicate it. His disposal is much better than T Macs, he is much smarter than Sellar, and he is more reliable than Frawley imo (more consistent output - I know they play different roles). Would rather keep a great third man up' than lose one.

It's time for Jack Watts to step up as general of the backline, in my opinion. He showed this year that he can play the Rivers role. Reads the play well. Knows when to leave his man and become the third man up.Just needs to develop Riv's bravery and spoiling ability, and we'll have a faster, taller Rivers with better disposal, who can set up play better.

I just hope he isnt leaving due to being forced up forward for half the year. a position he has shown no interest in playing in the past and was only really needed because of the slow progression of watts

His basketball minded background may suit defence moreso than being physically hunted, AFL style.

during games it looked like he loved it on the forward line. i'd never seen him smile so much until he started kicking goals.

Losing Rivers is a disaster, we are the Bulldogs of the 21st Century.

I think it was fairly obvious at the end of the season that he wasn't in our plans going forward. Effectively we began to build a defence without him - Tommy Mac, Frawley, Garland,Watts, Dunn, Nicho etc. Neeld wants a hard running long-kicking back-line. Rivers - for all his qualities- is not in the mould

Losing our best defender is just what we need to finish off the worst season of any AFL club in history.

And no,Chip the Spud isn't better than Riv,he's had one good season,as for Bartram,Joel Mac,Garland-give me a spell!!!
