Very interesting article written in the Small paper today by Shane Crawford about just how strong the bond up at the Swans is.

Even a Hawthorn player was suprised.

75% of the list comes from elsewhere so the team becomes a second family.

Interesting how the Melbourne Storm is very similar.

Harden up Demons.

I've got a couple mates who play up there, and the culture there is incredible.

One of the guys came from another club, and his personality has done a full 360. Used to hate not getting picked and was very 'head strong'.

He was telling me the other day that 'I don't care if i don't play, all i want is for the boys to play well and win. If i'm lucky enough to get a game, i'll love every second of it'

That's how Melbourne was when Smithy coached them.

How interesting.

Right... so what's the solution?

Relocate the club to afghanistan?

I'm sure the group would stick together and become much "tighter-knit" if that were to happen.

Does that constitute "hardening up"?

I'm envious of the Swans culture none moreso than last year when they played and won against the Cats and Skilled Stadium.I hope that Neeld, Grimes and Trengove etc can build towards something similar.

Backs to the Wall stuff in enemy territory. they'ld have to become brothers.

But we, we are liked & pitied by all the other clubs. Why, because we're not in the faces. And not in Vlads face. RESPECT?

We need to HTFU and start kicking some sand about. If it irritates our competitors, GOOD.

this is why I wanted Roos @ our Club last Year in some Form... his imprint would be huge.

I love that Neeldy is taking on the challenge, but that Roos experience would add heaps to our group as well.

You don't need to run away to face your demons, they live inside.

We need to face them in our collective mirror.

cul·ture/ˈkəlCHər

Maintain (tissue cells, bacteria, etc.) in conditions suitable for growth

So that's how we are treating our players, got the wrong one

When I was twelve, I competed in a science fair and got first place, so my bacterial growth experiment was certainly a winning culture.

All this culture stuff is rubbish......it is simple......if you play sport....you want to win....simple as that.....as long as the players want to win it should happen........but I am only small so if I wrestled a big guy I should lose......our 'winning' culture is to get our guys to beat the big guys......everything else is complete cerebral masturbation

so if the Swans lose to an emotionally charged Magpies outfit this weekend, does this mean the Swans 'culture' has failed...

as I have said cerebral masturbation, you play to win, that's all...this is footy, sport....it is bad enough in the modern workplace without it becoming pervasive on the sporting arena...........

buzz words over the last twenty years...."backs to the wall", "the right stuff", "when the going gets tough, the tough get going" "in for the long haul" etc etc etc etc etc........

Nowadays it seems people need a motivational word to drive them on, in the past you just did it........

Next season if MFC win a few games then I know our 'culture' is improving

The Bloods culture has been rock solid since Paul Roos took over coaching. Suprised you are not aware of it.

It is not a weekly culture...

And to state the obvious, footy is a team sport. As many so called experts say, 90% is played above the shoulders. If the "culture" ain't there, you won't win. DeeM's first hand information is testimony to that.

It is a buzz word, my opinion, no matter how many people will try, I ain't gonna change......you play sport to win, that is the culture..the rest is as above.......

how about Manchester United (one of the most successful teams in the last twenty years) or Manchester City...their culture, ......spend money.........to bring in the best players....ie to beat the big guys

The fact you don't believe it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I could use Manchester City or Chelsea to counter your arguement.

Both of those clubs have spent obscene amounts of money with not much return.

I hate Man Ure but they have a rock solid cultire in that joint.

You can call it a "buzz word" if you like, but it still has gravitas in team sport. Sir Alex Ferguson instilled a winning culture into Man U. Other EPL clubs have tried to buy an EPL title, failed and nearly went broke doing it. There's the difference............"culture"

People use tools at they're disposal as a way of staying out of touch with they're inner subconscious thoughts coming thru & haunting them.

some of the tools are pretense, drugs including alcohol, aggressive behavious, the arts, Comedy, only as a distraction to fend off empty mental spaces where inner thoughts may enter they're consciousness.

So most don't get to realise they're subconscious thinkings, except maybe in they're dreams.

This is where the Culture thing gets away from the club. And as the club is fiull of well off content people, that is what takes over the club.

And it sneaks up on our young players, eroding their insecurity driven hungers & desires, & drive.

It overwhelms our club with contentment, & as one Human need is to find contentment, they find it too quickly, before they've barely started playing.

I think the "bloods" culture was probably about before Paul Roos.

Im not sure who took it to Sydney but certainly Roos used it.

Perhaps coming from Fitzroy where the history and culture was so prevalent and going to a new club where there was little culture developed assisted.

I have said Culture cannot be the responsibility of one. The culture must by its nature belong to all. There can be a players culture a leadership group culture a coaching culture etc.

There has been much mention of a club culture and this will develop the more people identify aspects and "buy into them" to quote the current phrase.

I was listening to the club songs after the finals and wonder if our culture is reflected in our song.

I notice most clubs have winning in their words. Team is also strong

Our song is about the flag (the emblem of the team we love) and old acquaintance

I am certainly not suggesting we change the song I loved to belt out when we won but it is noticeable when we see the arrogance of the cakewalkers and the winning/ fighting expressions in so many songs. Our song may well reflect the culture of the past when winning was assumed to derive from the comeraderie??? of the group.

Whatever lets get that winning culture into our group. Make them realise it will not be given has to be earned and will only come with plenty of hard work and intensity. We will all join them and may be able to attract others to winning culture.

Its still a long way to go,

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
