Goddard Gone..

Featured Replies

I'm a golf pro and I can guarantee a 1 handicapper isn't going to win millions playing on the tour... He should take what he can get in his last years playing footy! Hope it's with the dees...

For memory the gap between a 1 handicapper and a touring pro is basically the same as the gap between a 1 handicapper and an 8 handicapper. Even at the amateur level a 1 handicapper would come up against blokes playing off +2 at the elite pennant level.

anyway carry on. No to BJ from me. We've got enough blokes with bad body language and I reckon he's played his best footy.

Matthews reckons he's gone from a contested style to a link player style. Having said that he would still add value just don't offer him the world - GW$ can do that.

Don't want him, he seriously looks like he's lost his edge. I have watched him this year, and if he doesn't want to be there, why hasn't Watters relegated him. Let's leave this please...., and at that money IMO the war chest would seriously be wasted

Clark looked like he had lost his edge before this season... Sometimes stars need a change of scenery.

If anyone complained even the smallest bit about getting Goddard I would be absolutely shocked.

Fact is, most are just saying "do not want" because they doubt we will get him.

Goddard would easily be in our top 3 players for the next 4 years.

One of the most overrated players going around. One great season, a la Lindsay Gilbee. Just happened to be a #1 pick and take a few iconic marks along the way.

No thanks.

Jones, Viney, trenners on the inside,

Goddard, grimes, blease on the outside..

Another dimension and a big difference..

EDIT: and would probably mean we could cut the Cale Morton umbilical cord

I see much Goddard in Watts. Not interested (even though I was hot to trot for him 12-18 months ago).

Why have I changed ? Because I believe after a turbulent ride, Trengove and Grimes have grown into their roles and will be much better next season in terms of leadership on field. And that was my sole reason .... Leadership.

Surely it has to be Freo or GWS who have made the offer. I lean to Freo.

I'd give him $3 - $3.5 over 4 yrs, imagine the benefits the midfield (and the watts' an tommy macs) would get from him..

this is what the War Chest is for!

So he is being offered $1M a year and you would offer $850K a year to come to the Dee's - there's a tempting offer.

Wouldn't be surprised if Carlton whip out the brown paper bags, to be honest........

Pretty certain when it was discussed on the radio last night, they thought that Goddard / Saints would be negotiating a contract of around $500k a season, and that it would require something along the lines of $800k to dislodge a player using free agency.

If Carlton get him, we get Cloke.

Well that's where my head is with that anyway.

I would prefer Cloke but would never turn away top 50 players because they are 28.

There are better options, but they might disappear (or never appear) so we will see.

I don't really understand the logic of this thinking. We have the worst midfield in the league and a non existent forward line (except for a bloke that wasn't with us last year) and folks are debating if we should take proven experienced players from other clubs? We should try and get both Cloke and Goddard. That's too blokes the opposition have to worry about. Right now the 2 players that are filling their spots in the team are James Sellar (Big bodied forward) and Joel Mac (Link up defender) or Beamer (Inside/Outside mid). Not sure that many sides are too concerned about lining up against those players.

Before you get stuck into what we might get, look at what we have.

Don't think too hard about it..

Brendan Goddard: Will cost $700+k a year, peaked in 2010, is a backman/floating utility. So-so tackler and questionable temperament. Have a read of the Saints message boards to decipher what he's worth these days. Here's a hint: it's not more than Mitch Clark (650/year).

Gee thanks for explaining how the club is going to get better next year. Maybe Beamer and Cale Morton will really turn it around.

And if your opinion of footballers is based on footy forums then we shouldn't have gone anywhere near Mitch Clark, Nathan Jones would have been delisted 3 years ago, and Juice Newton would be our starting CHF.

What exactly would Goddard offer the demons other than helping us get to the 100% salary cap peak? Dont get me wrong - great player at his best but I just cant see how he fits in a club that basically needs forwards, mids and players that can spread with speed.

FMD. We don't need backmen.

Gee I don't know maybe he could offer us a good player? What team are you watching if you think Goddard offers us nothing?

FMD. We don't need backmen.

and we wouldnt have to play goddard accross half back...

He would probably be used most effectively as a link up high forward/ wing

he is a strong contested/ lead up mark and a scything kick into the forward line

Theee is a reason mckenzie tags him regularly

Exactly.... every week teams tag either Hayes or Goddard.

I constantly hear the "we have no stars" talk, but when one becomes available we turn our nose up at him?

Melbourne mentallity: "I don't want to take on a star who is touted as a captain of another team when we could save money and pick an 18 year old who could be the next Addam Maric"

Goddard FA. cost nothing at trade wise. Wants 700k. Sign ASAP.

Saying Goddard is not worth more the Clark last year when that deal went down is wrong. Clark had played one really good year and that was as ruck.

I did question Clark and his price tag last year. I was wrong.

We need quality players in. We bemoan lack of senior players/quality. How could we not look at Goddard?

The source for the lucrative offer to Goddard is one Dermott Brereton on SEN.

Dermie also thinks we still overpay players. Obviously has not caught up with Tim Harrington been brought in as List Manager to 'regularise' players contracts. Only been a few years Dermie...

If we draft any players on big bucks they better have an obvious position and be dominant at that position.

Guys without obvious positions tend to contribute less: Bennell, Dunn, Davey, Martin, Morton, Watts (I still have hope for Watts though), Sylvia. Same reason that the highly rated Josh Toy is being off-loaded.

I don't want the MFC to spend a fortune on a player to test him somewhere. BG is the highest paid utility in the comp.

Boak, Caddy and Cloke make sense. Goddard makes zero.

Wouldnt be surprised if Collingwood nabs a Goddard type if Cloke leaves, will have that 700-800K sitting around.

and what if pavlich were available? Up until recently (approx halfway through this season) he didn't necessarily have a 'defined position' but i know i would pay AT LEAST 700k for him

Damien Barrett on the footy show last night said melbourne and carlton are into Goddard now.

lets the games begin! this could be one of the most intresting trade week/ free agency!

After Damien Barret on the Footy Show last night confirming interest in Goddard, I am liking Mark Neeld and the direction which the club is taking! I really do think we will rise next year with the acquisition of some good players via trades and free agency! GO DEES! GIVE EM HELL!

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
