Sorry to not be as happy as most seem about this. The biggest story in this that I see is that its in the papers. Either its a big leak or its false.

The impact on the player group of a quarter of the list being unwanted will be huge.

Everyone who's saying how good this is ought to think about how they would feel working in an organisation where this was happening in the public eye. We're humiliating the players AGAIN and that cant be good for anything other than taking the heat of Neelds coaching. It disturbs me its in the public arena... Theres a month to go of this season the last time I looked.

The players had no football department to speak for years because we were broke. Thats at least PART of the reason so many have not come on. You disgrace the playing group en masse like this at a cost...I hope we're not digging ourselves a grave.

I take on board and agree with what you have to say.... it's a good post... it is the players livelyhoods we are talking about, and I for one am very aware of this.

On the other hand - the club (MFC) has a right to employ who they wish. Also players know this is not an industry that provides long term. You have to preform at an expected level.

Players knew when Neeld came in that things would change. Players are employed by the club on very good money and are expected to obey instructions, act in a professional manner at all times and perform at higher expectaions then general society. If you can not live up to the standards set by the club you will be fired.

It's a cut throat industry. Posters on here are allowed their views.... Reality is that I'd expect half the players listed in the OP to be kept and half will likely be moved on for whatever reason.

These blokes are professionals.............. they get payed $'000 a year to be professionals........ they need to start acting like professionals and do what is demanded of them.

I would add another vital component - fire in the belly and a hatred of losing a contest.

Good post.

That's the second trait. And it's called "leadership".

If Rivers goes, it will be for political reasons and not football related.

Cameron "Dr.Evil" Schwab pulling the list management strings?

And people call me a conspiracy theorist!

Can anyone please tell me if the article which generated such interest appeared in any other media outlet?

Based on the lack of response to my question for over an hour, it would appear that the article has not appeared anywhere else in the media - looks like Jake got an exclusive!

We may be a chance against the saints

who are you trying to kid?

the only chance we are is to get within 12 goals

This is riveting stuff.

Is it accurate? Well, you only have to look at today's e-mail and talks of a proposed "war chest" (even looking back at past list management decisions by Neeld's mentors, Blight and Malthouse) to make sense of it.

If this pre-season doesn't put us in the right place, we might as well cark it. At least they're giving it their all in trying this time.

More likely ... no-one really cares about a bunch of non-performing footballers at a non-performing club.

So, a 'no nothing' journo would write an exclusive article on 'a bunch of non-performing footballers at a non-performing club'?

The real question is 'where did he get his information'?

Who knows. Could have come from anyone. Could have been deliberately fed to Niall by the club.

It's a nothing Friday filler article.

If it was 'a nothing Friday filler article' why would the club feed information to Niall which makes them and/or the players look stupid? No benefit to anyone!

Coaches have been using the media to put the acid on players since time immemorial.

If the players don't want to look stupid, start playing well.

I'd be very very disappointed if we didn't offer Rivers a decent contract to keep him put.

He has been one of our best, most consistent senior players and has not dropped his head once, despite being demoted from the leadership group.

Where does Rivers play next year? Is he in your starting 18? He is good and gives his all but does not have a defined role. He does not have the size or speed to be a stopper and does not have the mobility or skills to be offensive. I am not saying get rid of him but he is not a necessary keep.

I included the 'club' in my comment - so you are saying it is reasonable for a coach to make the club look stupid! The club is bigger than the individual, including the coach.

However, back to the real question - where did the information come from - it is certainly not acceptable nor does it make sense to feed such information to the media to the detriment of the club.

Your views are well known - put them aside for a moment and think of the club.

How is putting the acid on players making the club look stupid? It's a motivational tool. Either they'll respond to it or they won't.

It may also be aimed at squarely putting certain players in the shop window.

Only your skewed vision sees anything detrimental in it.

I doubt it came from a player manager as they probably wouldn't know all the detail of all the players named.

If it came from the coach/club, then why not say so if that's what they believe, and why not give it to all the media outlets if it helps the club?

Bit of clutching at straws going on here I think.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
