The wooden spoon could seriously be ours

Featured Replies

This thread might be premature but with GWS leading Port by 7 goals, the landscape changes dramatically:

Assuming GWS win, and

GC beat Melbourne

GC beat GWS

GWS beat Melbourne

Then the spoon is ours.

The thought sickens me in the guts

BUT

With picks 1, 2, Viney, another high pick and a star free agent like Cloke- it's last chance saloon for the Dees to turn this thing around.

But we have been playing players out of position this year, the AFL might not like it.

You would have to think we will beat one of GC or GWS, maybe even both. If we don't then we are in big strife and doomed to the bottom for a few years more. Forget draft picks this is about pride and self esteem.

Are you actually hoping this scenario pans out?

I don't know if I can be bothered with this if we win the spoon this year. We will move a couple of positions up the draft order but will lose 5,000 in membership and many could have been members will simply stop caring. No kid will want to barrack for Melbourne and we will lose another generation of supporters.

Thank Christ somebody can see more than just bloody draft picks.

Do you actually get a spoon? Always wondered that. At least we'd win something, sell it on eBay... one of the masochists on here will buy it...

No.

Refer to my sentence re: "sick in the guts"

The thing that scares me is that given our form post the GWS (bar most of the Freo game) and our injury list I can't see us winning against either of the new sides.

But the draft picks still give you a woody.

But the draft picks still give you a woody.

And me.

And me.

I would prefer a club with Geelongs attitude, who just hate losing, regardless of who plays on the day.

Well we're not Geelong, we're pure rubbish.

Beating Gold Coast and GWS by 1 billion points wouldn't change the fact that we're pure garbage and it wouldn't change the team's attitude about anything.

We're rubbish, as if having absolute prime position in this draft wouldn't give you a woody.

I'm not saying tank, we'd probably even fail at that, but I'd rather the spoon and the picks than some meaningless, sloppy win over the noobs. Places 9 - 18 mean nothing to me.

I highly doubt this will happen, and I pray it doesn't. We are already languishing in one of the most unsuccessful periods of any sports club, and adding another wooden spoon would be awful.

We might still be rubbish but I would love to win be I billion points, would put 186 to rest.

To get anywhere you must climb through possies 18-9...waiting for handouts like a beggar will not help anthing. Haven't you learnt that in the last 5 years?

They're fickle anyway and will come back on board once Viney, Cloke, Whitfield & Stringer (or whoever goes 1 & 2) are ripping it up for us. Do you really think if they're going to jump off they wouldn't have done so already or that they'll refuse to buy a membership just because we finish 18th instead of 16th?

While I think it's possible, I don't think Neeld, or the team, would put up with losing to GC at the MCG tomorrow.

If we needed to win any game this year, it's tomorrow. They simply cannot lose.

BTW, Port will probably come back.

I think a lot of peoples support for this club hangs by a thread. I doubt any one on this message board would give up on this club. We are all 100% devoted. But what about all the semi supporters? We need them on board.

If you think the difference between 18th and 16th is nothing then good for you. I think pride means a lot. I think we need to hold onto the very, very, small amount that we have got and try to build on it.

We're not climbing anywhere this season, we'll be 16th no matter what, so the climb still hasn't begun.

When it does begin, I'd rather do it with a team that can make it to the top.

I am going to the G expecting a win. We will beat GWS as well and Port are coming back.

NO SOUP SPOON FOR YOU!

GWS 41 points up now only lead by 8 points. No Sheedy doesn't believe in tanking.

Yep

Win every game possible and worry about drafting on 2nd September

Anything else leads to were we are now.

I heard all that talk in 2008. It was unsuccessful. I prefer the good old hard work theory myself.

We have Viney stitched up for next year. I would prefer a few more wins this year so maybe a few footy jumpers are sold over summer.

Yeah but GWS have $cully who's ripping it up with 9 possessions to three quarter time, so if he continues with that form GWS will win easy.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
