I've watched a few games this season involving Daniel Merrett and have observed the number of players he has injured. I'm not sure if he's a dirty player but he is certainly reckless when contesting the ball.

I'm a bit surprised he was suspended, considering he's background.

I have noticed the same thing too.

Have watched plenty of Brisbane games and it looks as though he intentionally tries to injure his opponents but makes every effort to make it look like he's playing the ball not the man.

He is very good at it.

True... rather have him inside the tent pi55ing out that outside the tent pi55ing in.

That is an interesting observation. He always used to do the thing when he wanted to take the ball over the boundary, he would run and kick but go over the line in the process of kicking, clearly faking it. But the umpires latched on after one or two times and started pinging him for it.

And I hate to bring this up, but I can't stand when he's (as in he is) and his are used interchangeably. Must annoy me more than others, but it ruins the sentence and I see it multiple times every day.

His Dad was a real tough player too.

While "should of" started as a written corruption of "should've" (similarly "would of" and "could of"), I have noticed people now clearly using "should of" in speech, including football commentators like Brian Taylor. I think unfortunately it's here to stay.

As for the apostrophe, maybe it would be better if it was removed from keyboards altogether ... there are far more errors with it erroneously put in plurals than left out of possessives.

Tom McDonald contributed significantly to his own injury by turning back into the pack. That said, I wish we had a player that other opp'n players feared when going for the ball. Mitch Clark probably has defenders worried because he is somewhat reckless when contesting for the ball.

I think its a good coach that tells players to bring an opp'n player to ground when they are contesting a mark. You have to ensure body contact is made so that:

A) the player cannot run off and at the very least it will hold up play

B) the player may miss/spill the mark

C) the player will hear footsteps next time

Of course our player needs to keep heir feet as well otherwise it becomes a shambles.

I keep thinking back to Justin Blumfield in the 2000 GF taking an easy mark with 2 Melb players bearing down on him. Zero body contact from our blokes and Blumfield ran in to score an easy goal. Sheedy would have told Ess players to bury a Melb player in the same situation.

We need more mongrel.

Well that plan obviously didn't work. Tommy's next involvement, albeit 2 weeks later, was exactly the same courageous play. Good onya Tommy!

Merrett leads with his knees. It's that simple. If you watch him jumping into an opponent or a pack, his knee is always coming forward into the man in front of him. He's a huge guy and there's a hell of a lot of power being focused into what looks like a fairly innocent contact. Interestingly, on a few occasions we have seen him contort himself while jumping for the ball to ensure that his knee makes contact with an opponent who is not directly in front of him, and I think if anything gets him into trouble it will be this.
