Jack Grimes- why the hype?

Seriously though. People will come on here and say his been injured yada yada which is true. He has not been able to string any sort of football together through his career but then again why is he captain? Why do supporters love him? I read comments that he will be elite but he has no elite trait. Went at 38% disposal efficiency on Sunday, has no real speed, is not a good kick, doesn't win much contest ball etc. Am I missing something when it comes to Grimes? I have him on par with Ben Howlett from Essendon which I dont mean as any disrespect but there is no hype around Howlett yet mention the name Jack Grimes and for some reason Melbourne supporters froth at the mouth. I hope I am wrong with Grimes but I can't see an elite footballer in him just an honest servant

He has the ability to win possessions & consistently rack them up wherever he has played which is not a bad place to start when becoming a good footballer. It's more about attitude, application & leadership with Grimes. Brett Kirk didn't have any elite traits either, look at the footballer he became.

I think he's lauded for his courage, honesty and toughness.

The younger brigade of players really respect him and I reckon he's a hard nut.

We need him in our team.

I have no qualms with him in the team however his ability has been overstated in my opinion. Rivers is the hardest, most courageous player in the side and was very noticable how vulnerable our backline was without him on Sunday. He always leaves his opponent to help a team mate and takes a dangerous forward generally. Grimes is a steady player in my opinion and the comparision to Kirk is a bit extreme. Grimes is hard at the footy but not to the extent Kirk was.

He is going a lot better than given credit for, but he was down on Sunday.

Averages second most uncontested possessions to Jones at nearly 14 a game, so that tells me he is working hard to spread and get the footy.

He makes mistakes but he is a neat player who has a great attack on the ball, and has a high footy IQ.

His disposal has become a bit of a worry, but it is amazing how someone's disposal seems to improve as the team starts winning and having better options available to them. But with Grimesy, I love his ability to work hard all day, gets to the right spots a lot and wins a lot of the ball, rarely loses a one-on-one contest, is a good mark for his size, and he is obviously very serious and dedicated to his footy. Don't think he will be become 'elite' so to speak, but will be a very good player for many years.

Pity our other captain was not playing as well.

Sometimes, ability isn't the only quality that makes a footballer. In a time of lost loyalty and integrity, he's right up there being a clubman, courageous and has the footy smarts. I don't think we've seen the best of JG yet.

And yes, I think he has had a decent year so far, and has taken to the captaincy well. The only reservation I had with him regarding the captaincy was injury, but so far so good on that front (touch wood).

The comparison to Kirk was in relation to maybe not being the most talented but getting the most out of himself & others.

I dont think Grimes or Frawley will ever be elite, but if they even put themselves in the debate - its better than anything

else we have had in the past decade.

Jones will be elite, Clark is elite.

Of our younger draftees, none have really stood up like Dustin Martin made you take notice and say, this kids a star.

Excluding Howe.

I used to think that kid was Trenners, but he looks to of definately gone backwards from last year.

I would probably ear mark Jack Watts now as the only youngster I am confident will make an elite player - excluding Howe of course,

I never include Jeremy, Im too one eyed Howe, the kids something else.

Grimes finds the footy, takes some nice grabs and doesnt give up. These are all traits i find endearing, so thats why he's one of my favourites. Plus i've had the pleasure of meeting him on a couple of occsions and he's a ripping bloke!

As for people having a dig at Trengove, plenty of players plateu after a few years in the system. Rich had a coupel of down seasons after his rising star year but its obvious he is quality and is playign well again.

Has all the ability in the world but that has not made him a good player.

Pity he did not have a few of Grimes other qualities

Oh, I see - well, Col will forever live the mantle of the 'potential' stamped all over him. His other life choices remain questionable.

Jack is no star, but he's a spiritual leader.

Grimey rarely loses a one on one which is more than you can say for Gentleman Jack Watts.Captaincy does equate with best, just best leader and by all reports thats what characterises Grimes. I dont see superstar though and I argued for Jones as captain and I'm not backing down.

Difference being Rich started getting tagged.

Id hate to even imagine how Trenners would go with a tag thesedays, considering how slow he looks.

It stands out like a beacon that Jones should be captain.

Hopefully they correct it before next year, Im sure they will, its pretty obvious.

A great captain doesn’t need to be an elite player!

Not a fan of Nick Maxwell but this article shows why he is captain: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/afl/collingwood-captain-nick-maxwell-a-mistaken-identity/story-fnantfnw-1226412706617 In his words “…People ask why is this s--- player the captain…” Read the article and find out.

Grimes will be a great player and great captain! Is Sylvias Dukes starting this thread just to be a troll!!

Yes i can see what your saying but for now it's great to see Jack just getting run into his legs.

Jack has got alot of upside in him and i rate this guy right up there.

He reads the play very well and has played 3 games in his life as an AFL mid.

Jack is the last problem at the MFC and to say he cant be elite is wrong.

Jack watts is in the top 3 players at our club in the last 5 weeks.

But guys like you cant help yourself.

Everything at the MFC is jack watts fault. lol

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
