THE 4 DRAFT PICKS WE HAVE

I'm not sure that it would.

My understanding is that we nominate to use the compo picks blind, as in we don't know what other teams are activating picks anyway, whether it's announce before or after the season.

We'd know what compo picks other teams hold, but that's where it ends.

These rules are in place for the first round compo picks only, ie the compo pick immediately after the first round pick or the mid first round pick. The end of first round picks and 2nd, 3rd etc can don't have to be activated before round one and can be nominated whenever the due date is after the season.

The GWS compo rules, as pointed out by maurie, say the first round picks have to be activated before round one of the season. It doesn't explicitly state that it is for their first year only, so it must cover their 2 year window for signing players. It only states that the picks cannot be used before 2012.

Likewise with FA the rules should continue so as not to undermine the currently nominated first round picks. Again, any current or new end of first round, 2nd, 3rd etc can be nominated at the end of the season.

It's not only us that it would severly disadvantage. If a team expecting to feature in the finals, or someone holding their pick, decided to activate their pick before round one, they could expect an extra pick in and around the teens. It would be unreasonable to then have half a dozen new mid round compo picks enter the draft at the last minute and all of a sudden their pick is pushed out into the 20's.

An interesting parallel to our tanking accusations of the past few years I read in an article just now within an NBA game review:

"Utah is due Golden State’s first-round pick in the June draft, so long as it falls outside the top 7. The worse the Warriors’ record, the better the odds they lose the pick.

Perhaps not coincidentally, Golden State started five rookies, becoming the first NBA team in the modern era to do so. After ending the season 23-43, Jackson denied intentionally tanking for a better draft choice, but didn’t deny that he was OK with the outcome.

“In the middle of it, we are trying to win,” Jackson said. “Now that it is over, we are pulling for a higher pick.” "

Sound familiar? Apologies if it doesnt belong in this thread, just found the analogy startingly reminiscent

I think we should trade Cale Morton to Freo for Zac Clarke Or Jon Griffin.

These two ruckman are miles better than Jamar.

Jamar should take the money and run in free agency.

Best players available (picking for need got us Molan). Having said that mids are what we need and thankfully they are easier to pick and faster to come on than talls.

Funny through when we picked up Gysberts, critics in the footy world said we were overloading with mids...

Tearing my hair out! We have no midfield - and the last ten years we've had more tall duds than any other team - the last thing we need is more list cloggers like Meeson etc.

the more we play Cale the less value he is gonna have. We'd be lucky to get anything for him.

The more we play Cale, the less likely it is we'll trade him. Amongst the best last 2 weeks, coming on nicely.

An uninterrupted pre-season or two wouldn't hurt him though ...

this is the most flawed logic I have ever read. Do you think his value will rise in the magoos?

and whoever suggested freo would accept a trade of Morton for Clarke or Griffen is deluded! both are too valuable. But when they look for more rucking opportunites that's when we can pounce.

Morton currently has zilch currency on any market!

What does everyone think about trading our 1st round compo pick for Dangerfield ? Apparently he is in no hurry to sign with the crows , would add heaps to the midfield , or would we prefer to keep our compo pick and hopefully use it on a potential pavlich like player like jake stringer if we could get him ? The other player I really want out of is draft is Jonathon O' Rourke dominating for calder and would give us outside class and speed in the midfield

From what I seen yesterday and if he continues to play like that, Do it. Break out game? Maybe

He will be much sought after if he keeps playing like that

Would pay overs to get Dangerfield. Still only 22 and looking like a real star.

The thing about Dangerfield is he is odds on to take the next three weeks to pick up 40 more possessions. I'd still have him at the Club, though. But what I really want is Brendon Goddard. I wonder if Jordie's performance on him on Saturday night made him more or less likely to want to hang out at the Dees.

I don't think the MFC is a good fit for Dangerfield. I'm of the opinion Adelaide is similar to Melbourne in the inability to develop players to their full potential and often end up with a lot of highly talented inconsistent players who show glimpses.

Teams like Geelong, West Coast and Sydney leave no stone unturned in developing players and clubs like those would be better suited to a Dangerfield type.

If a compo pick and big dollars is going to be thrown at something it should be work-horse type who has the drive and hunger to make it happen at any club, not another young developing inconsistent type.

I have mentioned to others that Dangerfield should be our number 1 target. He is a perfect fit for the playing style being implemented and our requirement for a skilled contested ball winner, he is also the right age demographic. He is out of contract as well as the additional factors of being his home state and previous strong relationship with Neil Craig.

If we are not planning a big move on him I would be very surprised.

My Darling senses tingling..

Outside mid, Outside mid, small forward, small backman, rookie ruckman, Viney. But Sloonie- that's 6 spots! Damn straight it is son, damn straight!

I think we have a ready made small back an in Bail, we don't need another ruckman unless Jamar goes and we think Spencer and Fitzpatrick aren't up to it.We need Pendlebury types. Two or three would do me.I feel we have the talls to develop. We have the forwards, we have the in and unders re Magner, Jones, Couch & Taggart to develop further but we are desperate to find outliners,re wingers or outside mids.I also agree re Garlett,I feel he is worth the risk.

Why dont people consider bail as a small forward? He has great defensive pressure, good eye for goal and works hard.

Maybe he cant kick a goal-which was once the main goal of a small forward.

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

GAMEDAY: Rd 15 vs North Melbourne

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
