Killed by Kindness

It is said that Draco, the Athenian legislator, met with his death from his popularity, being smothered in the theatre of Ægina; by the number of caps and cloaks showered on him by the spectators (B.C. 590).

The Demon within, trying to Bust free, sedated by soft words & gradually, bit by bit, Suffocated By Kindness... until the fire is 'snuffed out'.

The burning, the yearning, is it transformed from being merely an aspirational Footy player, to one of becoming something Else, a successful Business man, an Entrepreneur, a property developer, a councellor, a Politician...

Why are these seen to be Deesirable, Over & Above, being merely a footballer?

Why is it put other things in life ahead of being a footballer? Are we in fact subliminally teaching our boys that playing 'footy', it's just a game, the Big Game is, where the money is after footy????

Watts this actually saying too our kids?

Why is it for decades that our talented kids turn out overly refined for footy, but make excellent business community people. What is it we're teaching these boys, because "it 'aint footy".

A Focus distracted from footy. They're dreams of Status through football, superseded by the possibilities of Media careers.

High Rolling business Career opportunities elsewhere... the dream overtaken by other lucrative ventures.

This isnt altogether an odd notion. its a little odd, but not completely ^_^

Whilst the likes of Hawthorn created a 'machine' we set about an ideology, with nice desks.

Maybe the focus on actual footy wasnt there

I'm talking about the political correct notions that ruin us. since the fierce smithy was ejected from the MFC.

Pre 'Checker' we were, as we have become yet again, since Smithy.

Barassi, & also oddly enough another former Tiger In Jordan brought back a fierce desire & hunger for the contest.... just like Percy Page & Checker Hughes all those years ago transformed the battling club back then into a Fierce Machine which built its own Warlords from within its own Ranks, as they did their apprenticeships under that

ruthless regime.

..... following on from Barassi/Jordan was yet another tiger in Swooper.

so that is tiger spirit imported to fire us up ------- Percy Page, Checker Hughes, Ray Jordan, John Nothery, -------

can't anyone see the Politically Correct nice as warm Quiche` ways,,,,,, are strangling this club's combativeness.

we've grown into a mono culture of exclusive brethren.

And all independent thinking is outlawed. so the brethren are doomed to die out.

Posted (edited)

You forgot The Northern Stand...

well the wish for exclusiveness is a part of the whole issue WYL. its born from fear. to be a king of the castle & look down on the ferals. insular. from those excluded outside.

so the insiders values are of prosperity & keepings off. not competing, but keeping the others at bay.

this is not a take on all-comers attitude. its based in fear & self.

the players see the group rubbing their shoulders as a high self-esteem bunch, which is a false self esteem. but the players don't recognise this & then they aspire for the false self-esteem.

the players focus is turned away from footy as the road to self esteem, & their focus looks to other easy ways to get there. they don't need to be Hungry, Angry, & Desperate, because this road doesn't require those skill-sets.

its a focus that erodes the necessary skills, of a natural contact footballer.

We seem to have a lot of supporters who are totally unable to see their own faults, cannot see the truth about themselves & are in a self-supporting mono-cultured environment. this just enhances this delusion.

other hungry clubs get all the success they deserve; & us on the other hand keep missing opportunity after opportunity, as there is risk, & entrepreneurial risks have no guarantees, no sure things about risk taking.

but we continue to play safe bets off the field, & guess what, we play conservative on-field as well.

Oh my God. I was Joking...& this is the response!!

I will tell you the bloody reason we have had 50 years of a shitfest.

Since Smithy we have always hired first time coaches. The exceptions being RDB Northey & Roos

Why...I would love to know. But it sure aint a Northern Stand scenario like you bang on about.

you are absolutely wrong WYL. & this is the reason why we keep making the same mistakes off-field over & over again. because we are full of people who have no understanding of things of this nature.

... the same types of people making the same types of decisions as in Groundhog Day.

this is the clubs delusion. its decision makers know no better as they are of the same ilk.

thats why the club is caught in this vortex.

the cornerstone to becoming a true inclusive club, WYL.

What am i wrong about DL??

Do you think we need more first year coaches??

You are the only person on this site who bumps their own thread and then adds another post saying the same things.

Amazing.

To be fair to Dee-luded, I think that having some kind of place for supporters to meet would make the club more accessible, breed a long term loyalty among supporters that we need now more than ever and create a sense of community that I see as missing from our club. Kids who are wavering at the moment as to whether they stick with us or not might be more than likely to stick if they are surrounded from time to time with fellow travelers. (See my post re: visiting the Westpac centre)
That being said, before we start doing that, we need to get the fundamentals right and our core business down which is winning football games. I also reckon we should be trying to reach out to non-Anglo, non Eastern Suburbs Melbournians/Australians more than we currently do but I do recognize there are bigger challenges that we need to overcome before we try to do that (i.e. putting a watchable product on the field).
Social clubs and community outreach come after the point when we actually realize what our reason for being is.

Outright half of the posts in this thread are dee-luded's odd ramblings, including him bumping his own thread from a year ago.

I keep thinking I know what he's on about, but then it muddles again on the next line. It seems to be a kind of general lament that;

a ) Footballers have lives, doing things like studying graphic design and visiting orphanages, instead of getting trashed in bars and having group sex, like the good ol' days.

b ) The club has coterie groups of businesspeople, lawyers, and the like, who are quite pleased about being businesspeople, lawyers and the like, and may lead footballers to think that being a businessperson, lawyer, or the like may be a good career choice.

c ) The lack of firm manly handshakes.

d ) Nobody seems to want to hang out with him at club functions. I mean, he went to all that trouble of following Todd Viney around for 40 minutes, and Viney barely even introduced him to each new group he mingled with. Bloody stuck up I reckon.

e ) Basic literacy is being dangerously over-valued in the football community. But dee-luded will do his best to overcome this particular roadblock.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
