Howe and Bail are starring up and comers, but don't think for a second that the dees wouldn't send either player packing if they were requested to get a deal done. Both of those guys are attractive trade pieces for other clubs, and neither of those guys are locks for best 22 when everyone is fit. I think both are important for us to build, and value what they bring. But untouchable they are not.

Personally I would have Gys in the untouchables list, but even his name might come up at the right price.

We took a punt on an older bloke from well outside the recruiting "mainstream" - it paid off and I think we saw that he's a player who can improve further. To move him on after one or two years would be odd to say the least.

"If the right deal came up..." gets mentioned thousands of time during this period and yet that "right deal" - the one where a sensible club takes a "we'll do anything" approach - actually takes place very rarely.

I wouldn't trade Gawn, that kid could be anything. If he continues to improve his value will sky rocket but more importantly he'll become a very crucial part of our team. Kids of his size, agility and ability don't come around often.

'Untouchable' is a bit of a furphy I reckon. Every player has their price. If Carlton were offered Gary Ablett and every GC pick in the draft, they'd trade Judd. With that said, the following players I'd only trade if we were offered way over their perceived value:

Frawley

Watts

Trengove

Gawn

Garland is close to being on that list. Obviously there are folks that we'll surely be shopping around hoping for a nibble next week (Warnock, Bate, Dunn, Spencer, Maric, MacDonald) who have no or limited future with the team. If we can get rid of those for a draft pick upgrade, half-useful draft pick, or player who fills one of Neeld's needs, then that'd be a very good result.

I'd be actively putting pick 12 out there this year.

Martin, Gawn and Blease are absolutely untouchables I think, other than that looks pretty good.

Gysberts is going to be a beauty too. Hang on to him.

Disagree. Both are best 22, easily.

I don't understand "like for like," "clogger for clogger"- IMO it's either untouchable, only for a good offer, or clogger (and therefore not wanted by anyone).

Agree with your untouchables, but add in Martin, Blease, Gawn, Gysberts and Jones to that list. You are seriously contemplating adding Martin and Gawn (our future ruck stocks) in our potential trade bait? You have to be kidding. Blease could potentially be a seriously damaging rebound defender who we lack- Gysberts is showing all signs he will be a damaging inside/outside mid and Jones is one of the real triers we have.

I'd suggest if Martin and Gawn continue improvement this season; then we can look to trade Jamar out because he will be un needed and will still have value.

Out of the rest Macdonald isn't un-tradeable but is worth more to us than any other team right now- he is a keep, Wonna deserves another chance as he could be the small forward we are screaming for and Warnock is the only one that really seems to hold some currency for another club looking for a shut down defender.

I think this has merit, as much as I love the passion of the Russian, if he wanted to go back to SA, then we could trade him for the right player. Not sure where Spencer is out so we may need to rookie another development ruck man. I am genuinely excited by Gawn and hope he get the change to play some games next year.

I don't believe Warnock is a list clogger. I reckon he's a good backman and deserves a weekly game somewhere in the league. I wouldn't mind if it was in our side.

There is no such thing as "untouchables" Everyone becomes available if the deal is right. If GWS offered pick 1 in the mini draft for Howe or Jamar we would take it in a heartbeat.

There are people who are highly unlikely to be traded but no one is untouchable.

Posted

Hmm...

To avoid restating the obvious, I'm gonna focus on a couple that people might disagree with, in extent if not principle.

Ricky Petterd is a potential, even likely, killer player who is very important to keep.

Clint Bartram will always earn his keep and will always be worth more than he could be traded for.

Rohan Bail much the same as Bartram, although like others I think Bail has a lot of potential.

It was interesting to see Morton signd up for another two years. He is on the 'very concerning' list, but we know his best (like Davey, Green, and others) is a lot better than what he delivered in 2011.

Wonaeamirri I rate very highly - he is a smart footballer with more pace and a lot more agility than his body shape implies. Fit and untroubled, I think he'd be a solid best 22 and a dangerous small forward capable of hunting opponents. Worth more to us than we could get in trade.

Most of the rest are kids who I think warrant one more year (under a new coaching group), particularly given that next draft is blah blah blah better than 1999 and this one is blah blah worse than 2003. But some, like Maric and Bennell, have question marks hovering for sure.

Then you've got the obvious mature players who clearly need a change of club, and a few 'veterans' (by our club's measures!) who had a really poor 2011.

Posted

Ok, there is such things as 'untouchables' because they would tear the club apart to a certain extent.

Woewodin was an 'untouchable'...

But the players I would hate to see leave as a member of this organisation are (unless they agitated to leave): Watts, Frawley, Trengove, McKenzie, Grimes, Moloney, Jurrah, Jamar, and Bail.

The parameters for inclusion in this group are talent, commitment, and leadership.

And, of course, it changes constantly...

Posted

Disagree. Both are best 22, easily.

Im not sure Howe is quite there yet as an auto 22.By end of 2012 he will be. Bail is. Many dont see the sublime talent that Rohan is.. Am expecting Bail to lift another to another level in 2012 also.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
