One compo pick good ?

If there's that much gap why bother - just use the pick next year. If we're outbid for pick 1 I'd be hoping pick 2 was still worth the 2 picks - you get what you pay for and we need a star.

Yes, the one compo pick good response I consider a deflated response. Heard before on SEN, Geelongs interest in Crouch. Balme will be on in 15min.

100% behind you on getting a star. Two compo picks and a stiff upper lip.

So which club do you think would end up with our two first round picks in exchange for O'meara?

You're confusing what we give up with what GWS get.

We essentially traded Scully for 2 picks.

Then we'd trade the 2 picks for 1 pick.

Received a text today from someone I believe to be a very good source - picked the Neeld appointment a week before it happened and has a good track record over the last couple of years. He has contacts in the betting industry. Anyway, the word he passed on to me is this: Lyon is absolutely all over O'Meara. GWS are interested only in picks. Lyon believes that there is significant natural improvement in our list as it stands and believes that we could dispense with pick 12 and one of the scully picks to land O'meara. Gold Coast want to give up pick 4 only, but may be prepared to also offer up their own compo pick as well, putting them ahead of us. If this happens, Lyon has suggested we throw in both compo picks and pick 12. This would mean 3 first round draft picks which obviously nobody could trump short of offering up a superstar - Pendlebury etc. Now, to me 3 first round picks sounds excessive, but Hawthorn did trade 2 first rounders for Burgoyne, and Geelong the same for Ottens (part of the Moloney deal). Obviously Carlton gave up Kennedy, plus early first and second round picks for Judd. So that's the sort of value we would be placing on O'Meara. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Not sure im willing to give up almost 3 "top 10" picks for 1 player, i know o'meara will be a gun but gee thats alot of talent your giving up for the one player.

2 picks i could accept but just think 3 1st rnd picks is paying over the odds. keen to hear what others think??

After all the talk on here, Melbourne but not even be interested in him at all ? No reports to suggest this

When are those reports ever on the money anyway?

It's always a case of the media finding out once the deal is practically done anyway.

You think teams make these deals and just sit on it for a few weeks before releasing the details?

Guess it depends on whether GC consider throwing in their compo pick with their pick 4. Focus on the "gun/star" part.

{Who originated this mini draft concept for GWS's benefit ? Gubby Allen ?}

yes 'h_t' i understand more than likely o'meara will be a gun/star!! But IMO giving up 3 top 12 picks for o'meara is just too much. Especially if nxt years draft is as good as they say it is. As i said 2 picks i wouldn't mine 3 is too much.

Fortunately the leaks appear to have stopped coming out of Melbourne and we haven't heard anything about this in any of the newspapers. If we are interested, and I hope we are, it's better to be done behind closed doors, we have suffered in the past by players rejecting the club and by our inability to get deals done, so if we are trying to do a deal and it doesn't come off then no harm done.

Personally I would be happy to give up our pick 12 this year and one of our compo picks next year, but 3 picks I reckon is a bridge too far.

This sounds excessively expensive to me personally, is he to the value of 3 Gysberts?

Would you rather a "Judd Type" and two Bartrams

or, 3 Gysberts? Frawley, Grimes and Gysberts??

Using all these picks will reduce the quality of our depth, big call

I personally like the sound of Crouch:

Crouch feels the same, but he really, really wants to know what's going to happen next week. A fast, powerful midfielder from Ballarat, he is not considered too far behind O'Meara in the pecking order; if he doesn't get picked up, he already looms as a high choice in next year's draft. He has been interviewed by six clubs this week, and wanted badly to ask them what they really think will happen next week. But like the other boys, he knows he must wait.

''It's been so good to come here and be exposed to all the testing. Even speaking to the clubs has been good experience, something that will help me out next year, but to be honest it's so hard. I really want to know what's going on … I'm a bit nervous about it and I'm trying to be realistic because only one or two of us might go, but it's hard not to think about,'' said the teenager, who finishes year 12 this year and will defer university, start a traineeship and spend a second year in the TAC Cup if he misses out.

''I'd jump at it if I got it, because you'd be able to get your body right, play state league footy and already I'm thinking, 'what can I do to make sure I'm right to play in round one 2013?' But if it doesn't work out I reckon doing all this will really help me next year. It feels like a bit of a tease because if it doesn't happen, next year feels like ages away. But I know I'm pretty lucky. All the boys here have to wait until November to find out whether they get drafted or not. I only have to wait for one more week. I just wish it would hurry up.''

I think we need Talls- and if we got all talls in our mandatory 3 picks-- then that would be alright with me.Got plenty of mid fielders IMO.

I'd take Jud and 2 Bartrams in our current position - we've got a number of very good players but we've always lacked stars. If O'Meara is rate equal with Judd I'd give what's necessary and if that's Scully picks + 12 then do it.

Remember those mid first rounders might be Gysberts, Grimes and Frawler or they could be Jones, Bate.and Maric.

I don't think so - in our recent B and f 3 tall defenders finished in the top 6. Our ruckmen and 2 nd ruck finished 7th and 8th. We have McDonald (Tom) and Davis as young talls in development. Watts showed heaps this year. Cook is in development mode. We all know about Gawn. I'd say we're OK for talls, unless an absolute star presents. I think the midfield is the go.

Fiora, Tambling, Jarrad Oakley Nichols..... Travis Johnstone

Three first rounders is alot of eggs for one basket, if we got a Judd then wow, because we have never had a player of this Calibre in my lifetime *23*, i missed out on the likes of Flower regrettably.

These 3 picks are all about "getting it right" how we do that i dont care

I wouldn't. If however we gave one compo pick and pick 12 and got a later pick from GWS in return and then threw in a player or two I would. Warnock, Bate, Dunn, Maric may be of interest for a year or two while GWS builds.

If Suns are offering pick 4 in this years draft and GWS already have 123 &5 plus more that is not a big win for GWS. Our compo pick is good for next year in a better draft. A few big bodied experienced players though not stars is not to be sneezed at for a new team of mainly 18 year old players.

I saw Judd play his first game in the WAFL and from the first clearance you knew he was something special, just took the game on and had the excelaration and arrogance to do as he pleased. As Tony Micale said to Judd's East Perth players and supporters after the game say goodbye to this kid because you wont be seeing him here again. Have not seen much of O'Meara, he has had bad OP, but have spoken to recruiters and development coaches in WA and while he has big wraps have not heard of him being Judd like. The scout who is talking him up so highly may be from GWS pushing up his trade value. One WA development coach I have spoken to still put David Swallow as the best player he seen in the last 5 years from WA at the age of 16

Right now he is being talked up as No 1 pick if he was in 2012 draft but so was Darling many years ago, another kid like a Trengove and Martin will push up next year and like these two may leave their run late.

All I am saying is we really need to do our homework on him before we commit the cards we possess!

Can you trade next years first round pick to GWS as part of a deal. Even if we don't know what the pick would be, what is there to stop us having an arrangement that we give GWS our first round pick next year and they give us say their 4th round pick whatever it is and we give a compo pick and pick 12 this year and they give us back a slightly later pick to get O'Meara. Then we give pick in round 2 to get Viney being our highest pick as long as we have traded other compo pick or don't activate it until following year. Convoluted isn't it?

Pick is still pick 4, would take both our picks to get it i would have thought, we turned down ports 8+9 for pick 2 apparently

Absolutely.

There was a thread that was evident throughout the year created by Snoopy IIRC, something to do with It's the midfield ...... .

Imagine the change to our team if we added the names O'Meara, Crouch, Viney and maybe Stretch in the next couple of years. Sounding exciting when you remember who we got over the last few years minus one of course.

SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
