Beep tests and junior awards mean very little once you get to AFL level.

The question with this bloke is not about his potential or his ability .Most people here agree that he started well for us but has gone backwards .

The only questions about him are

A.Should we keep him in the hope it was just a bad year?

B.If we trade him ,will it hurt us?

C.Can you teach toughness ?

D.Does he want to be with us?

E. Will he ever put on weight?

Can anyone find 4 "yes" answers to these questions .

3 is not enough to keep him .

No to question D is also a fail .

So if we cant answer YES ... what will we get in return in this draft?

What do you propose and how the f**k do you plan to get it done.

Easy to scream TRADE THEM ... but in the real world its not so easy.

In the interest of semantics I'll play this game but I don't know why i have to point out the obvious.

Junior development/career means EVERYTHING it's the difference between making it to the AFL or not!

You state the question isn't about potential or ability. So you are saying there's progress to be made.

So to answer your obtuse questions and get 4 'yes' that make it or brake it for Cale

A) He has had ONE bad year over 2 seasons which were impacted by injury - that is fact not speculation. So yes it's been a bad year and he has runs on the he deserves patience

B Trading him at his lowest point we wont get adequate value - So yes trading him hurts

C Morton is an outside player always will be. Can you teach team defence - Yes Can you teach tackling technique - Yes. Can you teach hunger for contest - No that's up to Cale

D) He's an MFC player he's one of us so until that changes he wants to be with us - An absolutely absurd question. How can profess or assert he wants to go you have no idea.

E) Will he put weight on? was recruited at 78kg current playing weight is 87kg so yes he's put weight on

After wasting my time with this absurd criterion it further reiterates my points all this is knee-jerk.

Morton:

Has runs on the board

Won best first year player in our worse year ever 2008

Was a highlight in the darkest/worst period of our history 2008/2009 - I actually went to games to see him play

He's pure outside player that wont change

He can add to team balance - quality outside players are essential

He has been injury hampered in last 2 years - PCL was his first major injury and he hasn't recovered

He has put 9kgs on since being drafted

There is absolutely zero fact checking in this thread before opinions are being made.

He deserves at least 12 months to get back into form.

IMHO he hasnt been any good since he ran away from Brendan Lade in what seemed and felt like a very embarassing incident for any Melbourne fan.

Oh dear lord....

He didn't run away from Lade. The camera shot didn't show it, but the ball was in the area, so he was simply following the ball. Maturely.

FFS, if I hear one more person say that Morton fled the scene, I'll kill them.

Don't let facts get in the way of your misguided views. Your opinion is what it is but [censored] I'm glad your not in charge of list management. Morton is a spud except it and except a number four pick has been wasted. Shouting and swearing always makes a point sound more valid.

EXCEPT IT? Not once, but twice? What are you, a New Zealander?

Ditto to that...the camera pan clearly showed the ball moving into their area and Morton moving away from Lade and into the play zone. Lade, the knucklehead, was too slow to realise what was happening.

Morton has been cruelly dealt with by Footy Show heroes. He should not have to cop it from Demon supporters.

A swap with another interstater who wants to come home, maybe from GCSuns, maybe elsewhere. Simple, If were unable to get a reasonable trade, we keep him on. Or he walks.

I remember a couple of years ago when the heat was on, there was a bit push and shove and Cale got the push ,and he didn't offer a shove, he just turned around and ran off like the school bully was after him. Commentators just laughed!! I was appalled. And he hasn't done anything since to show me he has got what it takes to succeed.

NQR I'm afraid when the going gets tough

Maybe you should watch the game instead of The Footy Show. This posts says more about you than Morton.

You're delusional Diablo. I'm sorry, but it's true.

Fact checking? You have given your opinion as well as some misguided facts.

Quality outside players are essential yes but Cale is not one. Please watch his kicking. I'm pretty sure

good outside players have good skills.

Runs on the board? I assume runs mean games to you.

Best first year player in our 2008 team? Wow. Anyone who was drafted at any number that year and was given

his first 22 games for free and told to play loose on a wing would have won 'best first year player".

You are using his knee injury as an excuse for his form this year? Christ.

You have a limited understanding of what attributes one needs to even be an average AFL player.

Something Lethal said once during a game is at the crux of this debate

"It's a subtle but important fact that players compete with each other before they compete together"

Poor old Cale is an outside player- what we once called a receiver.

I don't know how relevant he will be for us in this role -If he cannot change his style and take a contested mark ,kick straight or man up.

Craig Bradley types need to hit a target at least 80% of the time.

Tackling is also compulsory now .

Casey will do him good -Hope he dominates there and gets back the Confidence he needs .

I dont feel good about knocking our players but a guy like Bate ( also one of our best 2 years ago)

deserves his go in the 1sts .

Seems to me it may not be as simple as "yes, we keep him; no, we don't".

Morton has put off contract talks til the end of the year. Could be/presumably he is testing the market.

Thus, if we decide to keep him, how much coin we offer (which may well depend on Scully and Sylvia's futures - amongst others), may well determine if he stays.

My guess is that we will put a new offer of some sort forward; it will then be up to him if he accepts (or has better offers or not). Bit how McClean panned out.

Ed.: I would not be making the offer too attractive. :)

Oh CJJ,,, I think you've done Craig Bradley a major disservice. He was a champ on a wing or through the middle as a rover or ruckrover. He was no shirker that I recall. Just the cream.

I would would definitely have him ahead of Nathan Buckley & equal of Michael Voss for effectiveness.

But your right re Morton, at this stage we'd be better off with our former Buckley than Morton.

The bit in bold is the only but you got right and it's about your post.

Hey he has put on 9kg - let's keep him, because he's a good eater. Sound argument there mate.

Team balance - you're scraping the bottom of the barrel there.

INjury hammered. A PCL is a 6 week injury not 2 years. His pinky ? Good grief.

He has runs on the board. Your acceptance of mediocrity is breathtaking.

Oh regale us with your insights if only to make me chuckle

Stated he can't put on weight - he has 9 kgs since draft

PCL - He had 10 weeks off, it impacted 2010, you miss half a season it has to.

Broken Finger impacted his preseason what ever you think he couldn't do any ball handling.

40 games out of 44 in 2 seasons he was considered elite within his draft group.

I ask for at least another 12 months to judge where he's at.

Your willing to throw him on the dung heap.

Your acceptance to disregard the 4th draft pick in the 2007 draft is stuporous.

Completely! 100% behind you on this one. "Mark my word" when Cale and the MFC get his body 100% right, he'll be a top 5 player, in the AFL!. HAVE SOME F@%KEN PATIENCE!!!!!!!!!!FFS!!!!!!!!!!

The way this year is going, we may aswell delist everyone and start again!!! F@%K!!!!!OFF!!!!!!!!!!

Agree, I would hang onto him. There are others who will be gone ahead of him and we can't end up with a list of 18 and 19 year olds.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
