Bate & Dunn should be nervous

These two players are looking very shaky to stay on our list. Certain starters for a trade IMO however they may keep Dunn for depth. Both these boys promised so much but have not delivered which is unfortunate for them. We now look to have more options up forward...

Both needed, both will play next year.

On what premise do you base that statement??? Neither of them have done squat this year, and Bate did squat last year. They may perform in VFL, but it never translates. The only thing that may save one of them is that Newton has to be in the gun first.

For the same reson we didnt get rid of Jamar two years back when everyone wanted him gone. some players take more time and we Dont get rid of them just because this forum wants them sold. Bit like the big Jack watts mistake. Oh hang on he looks good now

What?

Bate and Dunn have both had far, far longer than Watts.

Bate takes far too long to get going, he can't translate VFL form to the AFL. Generally takes him a month or so, compare to Howe's near-instant impact.

Dunn has had one fairly good season last year, but has been absolutely godawful this year. If/when he gets a senior recall, he will have to grab it by the throat or else his chance at the MFC is gone.

The reason both of these players are up is that they are both 24 and thus at a prime stage to be trade bait. A 24 year old leading forward with some muscle on him? I can think of a half dozen clubs who'd go for him as a trade. Not to mention GWS - trade Dunn to GWS for the 17 year old, free up the cap space and use the pick to grab JV a year early. Then you get Dunn's wages and use 'em on Scully.

For starters, I have never said or even inferred that Watts was a mistake, and nor did I want Jamar gone. Bate has had enough time to cement his position that to reference Jamar in the same conversation is just stupid. Dunn might get a reprieve, but needs to show something, cause he has shown nothing this year. Actually, he has been really bad, and we have depth. You can't try to win an argument against me by doing the standard "Jamar, Watts, blah blah", because I was never a part of that conversation. Unfortunately for either these blokes, they aren't supremely talented, Bate is older, and they are well and truly underperforming in a team which has depth and realistically does not need them.

Silly comparison. Jamar's a ruckman who was excellent backup for White when we were in the finals.

Both Bate & Dunn have had multiple opportunities and haven't had niggling injuries like Rush has had.

Howe to be honest didnt have a great day at the office.

I would trade Bennell, Morton, Wonna and Bate before Dunn IMHO.

Trade bennel before Dunn are you serious? Can't agree with that. The others yes, although they all hold little currency.

+1

Bennell has sooo much pace. Once he is surrounded by sublime skill, he will be a force for sure.

According to this article, both are contracted until the end of 2012.

Contract, schmontract, if the club agree to a trade or deal with another club and the player agrees to another contract the contract can be terminated. Just like soccer really, half the transfers for those exorberant fees are for players under contract. The ones that AREN'T contracted are the ones that go for free.

I'm aware how contracts work, but it means that its not as simple as delisting either. Dunn may have a little bit of currency, but i have doubts whether Bate would be sought out by any other clubs.

It seems to me we may have to make a couple of tough list management decisions at the end of the season.

I reckon both of them are primed to be traded for GWS for one of the 17-year-old picks.

Very hard on Bennell and Wonna, Dersert Fox. Bennell is a kid in his second year and has shown heaps of talent. He'll get more consistent with more experience. Wonna has had an horrendous year off the field. How about showing him some support. He'll be a beauty - just the sort of crumbing forward we need.

Bennell is in his third year, other than that I agree with you.

Miller got picked up .

Bates younger and a better kick .

He's got some currency IMO .

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
