"Consistency" is the new "Competitive"

I am very reluctant to come out and bag Dean Bailey. I am still not sure that he can't produce the goods, and I like the way he handles the media BUT, when he continually uses buzzwords like "competitive" and now this season, "consistency", it really undermines my faith in his ability to do the job. In my working career I have always been sceptical of people who relied on jargon and buzzwords. It often hid a lack of ideas. I know that what we see of Bailey in press conferences is just the tip of the iceberg but I want him to produce a creative and effective game style, and strategies for the future that are not merely reactive to the current trends. He may actually be implementing these things as we speak but we will never know because all of his comments are couched in such cliches. I don't like seeing his carcass picked apart, but he needs to say and do something to indicate that he is on the right track and give supporters some confidence. At least something more than "competitive" and "consistent", or that the young players are learning slowly. We know that.

We have been inconsistent, thus we need to become more....consistent.

Oxford def: always behaving in the same way, or having the same opinions, standards, etc.

I would much rather a chat about our pathetic attempt at a press or the decision to give the leadership of the club to those who can't lead, than discuss the guys use of nouns...

Isn't the leadership group decided by a player ballot?

From your business career, someone comes in and says we have got to make a decision. What do you do, say ' give me a year or two I'm not sure. The boss barks back, 'What do you mean, you've had four years to observe' I need an answer now.

It is now time for our board to make a decision. Do we keep him for three more years or look for someone someone else. Tell the board what you would do.

Yeah.

Sometimes Leading Teams can be good, and sometimes...

The kids may look up to Rivers, Green, Davey, et al. it's an entirely different question whether they 'should' look up to them...

To me, the issue about "consistent" is that our game doesn't (yet) hold up under pressure. Other teams know that our game relies on precise and decisive disposal to succeed, and at this stage it falls apart under pressure. If we were to become more "consistent", it would be because we're capable of holding our game together when we're put under pressure. That may have been what transformed Geelong in 2006 or 2007 - they learned how to sustain their very powerful game when it was put under pressure. Once we can do that, we'll improve rapidly.

However, a large share of the responsibility for bringing this about falls to Bailey himself.

Surely 'consistent' is simply the next logical step up from 'competitive'?

I guess it would be too much to ask for both.....

At this stage I think that where we are at, it's both! If you look at the Gold Coast, all they, and most people would've wanted was for them to be competitive in most of their games. Next year, they will be expecting a bit more consistency.

We are not that far in front of them in terms of development. Some people will argue that as the believe just because Dean has been there for 4 years, means we should be way ahead of them. Reality is, we aren't, and it is unrealistic to expect otherwise. At a maximum, we are 18 months ahead, but that's when we have Bate, Warnock, etc playing rather than kids.

I think consistency is the most appropriate word for this season. We have put in some dominant performaces in games, and at times in quarters. It's getting that consistency so that we play that footy more often. Next year there will be a new buzz word, especially if Dean is still coaching. It wont be competitive, and hopefully it wont be consistency.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Baily loves his buzz words and of all his mannerisms, this is the least I'm concerned about.

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
