Yeah, not my pick as our best players, love their endeavor though, I guess I'm more thinking of players who will try their guts out on him without getting too disparaged and who we can kinda afford to sacrifice a little bit... That is why I'd not like Grimes on Goodes, who would start our rebound thrusts? Warnock? MacDonald? I think not...

Besides, Goodes spends more time in the middle and slotting them FROM the 50m arc doesn't he? If he decides to venture in maybe then the plan would be to have Garland, or even spare man Rivers pick him up? Not really such a left field proposal...

Garland is the likely option to line up on him when he comes inside the forward 50, or playing on the flank, or even on a wing for mine, as he is the only one who is likely to match him for speed and strength.

Macdonald is the second option, and could well run around on him all day.

Grimes, ridiculous, his defensive side of his game is definately not his strong point, and if sydney saw a match up like that it would be goodes alone in the forward 50 and he would be stoked, and longmuir would think coaching is the easiest job in the world.

Warnock, and rivers are likely to be too slow, but rivers is maybe a possibility.

if he moves into the guts then a possibility of bail chasing, but really if he goes into the centre, Nathan Jones will be a possibility, only for a ridiculously hard tag, but the fact remains he is too short.

Or just put sylvia next to him if he lines up in the middle, and back sylvia into having a break even or better game than him, although sylvia could well be getting the hard tag.

Another option i just thought of is Tapscott maybe, younger, good engine, bailey wants him in the backline, physically could match it, and we wouldnt mind him playing up the field, but probably too inexperienced

Morton was used to good effect to match him last time, but is injured. Bruce was used in the past, but got carved up time and time again.

Wrathchild has come up with the only logical match in Dunn. You need someone who is tall and can run with him all day.

But as Nasher noted, he is an effing good footballer, so expect him still to kick goals and be effective. You won't stop him, just try to limit the damage he can do.

Who cares, Goodes had a massive game, kicked 4 goals last year and we still won by 73 points.

i reckon garland would be our best bet if goodes plays as predominantly a forward. He's got good speed, and go-go-gadget arms for the spoil

Obviously you watch footy without seeing what happens out on the ground then.

For a guy of his size Steph is super quick and that's just a fact. No point arguing it.

I'm not talking about "for his size", I'm talking about keeping up with Goodes and general speed. Goodes won't slow down to adjust for his size.

This actually happens alot in modern football, through some midfield taggers not wanting to play in the backline, when the forwards go back to rest the role is assumed by a defender, and then when they move back into the field the tagger gets the job.

It is a harder role to do with Goodes, due to his size, but definately would not suprise me if when he plays in the forward line he is matched up by garland, and then as he runs through the midfield he is put through a hard tag.

Goodes has played predominantly at centre half forward during the pre-season.Not saying he wont drift on ball but that is not the role he has played. Is it reasonable to play Lynden Dunn as a tagger if he plays on ball when he has trained as a forward all preseason? I dont think there is any easy answer to this one. For mine I would not tag him if he played on ball but have a defender who is told to zone from his man if Goodes drifts forward.

Sydney are struggling up forward and that is where Goodes will likely play predominantly.

Agree, although when i think about it, i probably didnt pick him as an obvious option because of a lack of pace. His ability to play outside of defensive 50 is a bit unknown. Might pick him up at stages, but wouldn't entrust "the job" on him.

I remember him kicking a ripping running goal at Etihad against Essendon once, showed a real turn of speed for a big bloke. 2009 maybe, Jurrah's first game? Also, dont really recall him being burnt on the lead too often when playing back before he made the transition into "forward/ruckman", which he has no doubt been disappointing at to this stage.

Don't think he could run with Goodes, but to say he's slow is just unfair. Slow "of mind" perhaps, but the kid can run.

I'm more than happy to talk about Martin's speed for someone his size in the Stef Martin thread, but here we're talking about matching up on Goodes yeah? Hey, he might do the trick as the man to take him inside 50, but I would think he'd be at least the 22nd in line to match up on him that day.

Like the minority on here, I can't believe people have mentioned Jones or Bartram to tag him. Goodes - 194cm, 90kg. Jones 180cm, 82kg. Bartram 181cm, 82kg. If Bailey used either of those 2 to tag Goodes, he should be immediately sacked - and I love Bails! We'd be better off putting Scully on him - at least we know he'd run over the top of him. I wouldn't even waste my time playing Garland on him should he go for a rest - put Joel Mac on him if anyone.

Lynden Dunn is the perfect man to play on Goodes. Matches him with height, weight and has a pretty good motor. If the ball is in Melbourne's forward line, he will make Goodes accountable becuase he knows how to kick a goal. Morton would be playing on him again if he were playing. I can understand why some people would say that Goodes gave him a hiding, but I believe Cale handled himself quite well, and would only improve next time around.

I do like the idea of giving Trengove a taste too, think it will be good for that kid.

Still amazed at the amount of people saying Jones or Bartram. It is quite embarrassing.

I think Bartram is way too small for Goodes, who IMO plays small, for a tall guy. And I think Martin is too tall, fast in a straight line, but hasn't the tank for a player like Goodes, unless he's transformed.

So I think we need to find a tall player who has speed agility & great endurence? Well there's Watts, he may be almost strong enough, by now. Dunn has the speed and height, and can focus on stopping. Garland, but they'll just draw him away from our backline, further weakening a weakened defence. Gysberts, & Howe. I doubt these boys would currently be fit enough.
