Chippa injured, Rivers has the ability in the air but no foot speed, Warnock is a class below, Garland?

Left field? Grimes? That'll be worth watching.

He can clean whoever up if we win by 73 again. I like the idea of Grimes if he plays forward. If he plays on ball I would only show concern when he pushes forward anyway.

Wouldn't think we're at the stage where we can sacrifice a creative player (ie Grimes) on someone of Goodes standard, can't see Rivers keeping pace with him, same with Garland, I have a feeling it will be someone like Bartram (maybe even Bail might get a run), a hard runner who can tackle and won't drop his head too easy. What I would love to see is Trengove playing on the Swans champ, I think he has a decent tank, is a good size match up, and would learn a lot from someone I see he could emulate himself on in the long run.

Couple of smokies would be Jones, who seems to be a favourite for run with roles, or maybe even Dunn if the forward line needs a mix up, but I would prefer them where they are.

Well, considering Morton didn't really have the physical strength to match Goodes in a marking contest, 26 touches and 4 goals vs 23 touches and 1 goal is a good job from Morton, IMO.

I think Garland, or Dunn, are the ones we've got at the moment available, so I think it depends where Goodes linesup as to who takes him.

Edit: I think Watts would have the speed and definately the agility, but I don't know if Wattsy has the tank for him.

Stef doesn't have the smarts to go with Goodes. It's not just enough to follow him around, at stoppages he would be murdered.

If you really want to lay down a challenge, put Watts on him when he is in the middle. But then again we have been told he won't be playing round 1. Otherwise, Bail for mine. And Garland when he goes forward.

Wait, when did Stef Martin magically develop speed? Don't get me wrong, I think he has a lot of potential and looks to have worked hard in the pre-season, but he'd be left in Goodes dust from the first bounce...

Don't see Gyz having the defensive capabilities or body strength to mix it with Goodes, but somebody PLEASE send him every decent Adam Goodes game in the last 10 years. In the future I see that as an absolute ripper match up but just doesn't seem ready yet for mine.

I hear ya, would just rather him learn from tapes than from letting their best player have a ripper game against us... If it's going to be a young bloke let it be Trennerz, he'll at least have a chance to keep up and body to him while learning

Goodes will in my mind be 'tag-teamed' by a number of different opponents including guys like Garland, Grimes, Bail, perhaps even Dunn. Depending on where he is lining up on the ground and on rotations to keep them fresh. It's be a tough job for anyone to stay with Goodes for 4 quarters, and to have the overall size/speed/endurance package Goodes has as well, he's tough matchup. 2 Brownlows... Morton is one of the few who has the tank and overhead ability to do it, but there arent many on the list IMO.

I don't believe Garland has the aerobic capacity to do the job for 4 quarters, and i wouldnt want to see him played as a tagger like that too often as i think he's better utilised in the defensive 50, BUT.. i'd just love to see Dean Bailey try it out in round 1 on Goodes. I think 4 qtrs in a full on, "follow him everywhere" tag, would be great for his development (JCB would love it, especially if they started on the wing). The Swans don't have any real tall forwards other than Goodes available with White out, so i think Rivers, MacDonald, perhaps Warnock is enough in the back.

I think Garland has the size, leap, speed, and importantly, the potential to damage offensively with long kicking and strong marking to go with a disciplined, accountable style, to tag the big Goodes/Pavlich types when they push into the midfield. The only issue in my mind is endurance, although i'm no inside expert on the matter. Can anyone in the know here comment on whether he has the tank to have a go on Goodes, not just in defence, but in the midfield too?

You're right, he'll need to be tag teamed. If Bailey starts Warnock on him we're doomed, Bail and Bartram don't have the physicality or size and Stefan Martin doesn't have the development. Goodes is an absolute star and his pre - season form has been outstanding. I'm getting nervous......

Only two players who are currently fit have a big enough engine to run with Goodes.

1. Bartram

2. Dunn

Bartram is too short and not quite strong enough. He is quickish, but not Goodes quick.

Dunn gives away a slight bit of speed, but has the strength to keep Goodes honest (i didn't say match strength because keeping Goodes honest is the best we can hope for). Dunn is also a solid tagger for his size.

Let Dunny run with him and we will see where that takes us. We don't have a "Goodes Stopper", so there is no right answer here. Just cross our fingers who ever gets the job can keep him under wraps.

Maybe 2011 will be the year where Goodes slows down, and we roll the swannies!!

Who cares, Goodes had a massive game, kicked 4 goals last year and we still won by 73 points.

Just read about the Swans v St Kilda practice match. Swans had a big win, 31 points and that was with the majority of their best backmen out (Craig Bolton, Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Tadgh Kennelly and Nick Malceski). Goodes kicked 4 as well. There is a lot of expectation for us to get up in Round 1 but it's going to take a massive effort from the boys, the Swans are not to be underestimated!!

I would be a little more concerned about our clearances and contested possession in the middle against the Swans.

It's a pity Frawley and Morton are out injured, but supporters will just have to 'suck it up princess' as they say when it's appropriate and will have to make do with what we've got.

Garland, MacDonald to me would be candidates to take Goodes when up forward. With MacDonald being a reasonable option. Surprised he hasn't been mentioned.

Can't believe yuou've put up Bartram and Jones for the job. Talk about a left field proposal. I'd say height would be an obvious concern in the defensive 50m arc....
