Michael Newton injured

Have to agree Dazzle, for some reason lots of people have a soft spot for him as I do.... except I don't understand why I do at all. Just hope he realises his talent, maybe gets a bit of mongrel about him, realises that he is a fairly sized unit and starts to take the game for once!!

I thought moving him to the backline was a great move (even though it was an exhibition game) and he might be made accountable instead of roaming around looking lost like he usually does. Hopefully the backline creates some intensity in his game for once!

FCS the guys starting his 7th season with the club

If thats not a list clogger I don't know what one is

You are right about one thing, he always looks lost (Actually you are right about everything except your opening sentence).

He's probably a really nice guy, but how long is long enough?

He's rookie listed player FCS. MFC need to develop a forward who can pinch hit in the ruck. We dont have one as yet. He is a cheap option thats hardly chewing up the dollars or holding anyone back. If he comes good then great if he doesnt then we have lost little.

You are plainly deluded if you believe all that. Everything you state is wrong

He can't pinch hit in the ruck any better than my grandmother

He is not cheap. He is being paid more than a typical rookie

He is holding a place that could have been offered to someone with more potential

If he doesn't (he won't) come good we have lost another year of developing someone else

As I said originally this is his 7th year FCS

I agree with Rhino.

If he had been delisted it would have provided another pick on the RL behind McNamara. I'll back Newton ahead of pick 150+ in 2010.

If you think your grandmother can ruck better than Newton she should have registered for the draft!

BTW, if you think RR is deluded then you think the FD is deluded because they agreed with RR.

I wonder who I'd back.

No I don't think the FD is deluded I think they do a very good job. That was a cheap shot Bob and you are deluded if you think that any FD never ever makes a mistake. If we are always going to back the FD no matter what we may as well shut down the site and set up a fantasy site for the non-critical, brain-dead.

Daisy I envy you. It seems things are either right or wrong with no room for uncertainty.

I don't mind if you disagree with someone but to call them "deluded" when the FD agree with them is to call the FD "deluded" because they came to the same conclusion. If you can't see that I don't think you're "deluded" but I think you're something else.

BTW, no need to waste keyboard effort by stating the obvious - I know I'm entitled to my opinion. I rate it much higher than yours!! :)

Another cheap shot Bob? Most people criticise me because I generally see things in grey, not black and white, but you seem to know better.

That is just such an illogical argument, which I felt I addressed in previous post. Now who's being black and white?

Well, I'm very happy for you Bob

Don't forget to raise this subject again at the end of the season and we will see who's opinion rates then

Impossible to compare Daisy. I said that Newton equaled the NEXT pick we'd have had in the RD. We haven't had that pick have we?

I'm not sure you get it. You won't see me saying anywhere that he'd make it. Difficult concepts these, aren't they!

BTW, Rhino agrees with FD.

Rhino = deluded

FD does not = deluded.

Go figure.............

You are plainly deluded if you believe all that. Everything you state is wrong

He can't pinch hit in the ruck any better than my grandmother - DEBATABLE

He is not cheap. He is being paid more than a typical rookie - WRONG (this was the case last year, not this year)

He is holding a place that could have been offered to someone with more potential - DEBATABLE

If he doesn't (he won't) come good we have lost another year of developing someone else - DEBATABLE

As I said originally this is his 7th year FCS

These are not absolutes as you present them.

Newton is depth. Deep deep depth, but depth nonetheless.

The first statement I don't agree with - he is not great, but better than Dunn or Sylvia going into the ruck.

The second is wrong.

The 3rd and 4th are debatable and the same things could be said about McNamara, Warnock, Campbell and others.

The only live pick after Tom McNamara was the Swans with Eugene Krueger, there were also some NSW Scholarship listings but they don't count

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_AFL_Draft#2011_Rookie_Draft

And I'm not sure that Eugene counts either because Sydney passed twice before taking him so he may be some sort of pre-listed player from the NSW zone.

I give up!

I can't believe I'm having an argument with a bunch of guys defending the retention of a 7 year recruit whose never looked like making it and looks lost and disinterested most of the time whilst denying someone else with talent an opportunity

I'm sorry but I thought this was the age of professional sport

My last comment on Newton (for the time being at least)

I just think there are degrees of everything and you paint him as an absolutely bad decision, without apparent consideration for the alternatives.

Hey, hey- never give up- you and all posters like me are allowed to have your own opinion. You are not a quitter.I still think Garland would and should be given a role on a wing. No one else agrees. But who cares.Just come to training on Thursday, Connolly wants us all to return like last week. Even the fatties like me.

Your most likely right, Daisy,,, and the others have had a change of face about this themselves over the klast few months, just to fall into line with the club.

So your guts and honesty shows through. But all in all, the timing, re of our list, & the swing in game direction, compounded by the new found confidence of Newton & the WAY he goes about his gamestyle,,, has determined that he's worth a further look as a rookie, for 12 months.

So, IMO your probs right, but 12 months to soon.

This coming 12 months will expose our deficiencies and who we need to let move on.

But rather than persecute the guy into failure, we may as well help him try to succeed. If he does it's a win/win. IF he doesn't,,, we all tried.

You're right we are stuck with him for another season. And, I don't really want to persecute him

I reacted to posters pumping his tyres and using the "faith in FD" defence argument.

And, you ARE deluded

Strange words, "faith" and "delusion". Both are perjorative and based on belief rather than fact.

The FD simply decided that for 2011, Michael Newton offered more to the football club than all the other young footballers who hadn't been picked up in the ND, PSD or RD at the end of 2010.

The crunch time for Newton will now come at the end of 2011 (or 2012 in the unlikely event he somehow manages to get three years on the RL). I don't see that that's a cause for either faith or delusion. It's simply a matter of the best (or least worst if you're a pessimist) out of several options.

I agree with the FD (and therefore Rhino). It's just a management decision, and no, I'm not "deluded". I wouldn't have thought a rookie-listed player costs the total club budget much at all, unless he gets some additional match payments, in which case at least he's playing.

7 years is enough to show something, and he has shown nothing.

My opinion is Newton is a waste of MCC money. We do not have to fill all rookie spots. Including travel, gear, super, workcover etc, a rookie on $50k might cost the clubabout $100k, (about 750 members), I would much rather my membership dollars go into equipment and facilities than Newton. If he was the best option for a rookie spot, we should have not filled the spot.

It's taken Colin Sylvia a similar amount of time to start to deliver on his "potential". Sylvia is a far better player than Newton will ever be but the degree to which he hadn't delivered on his potential is roughly similar and therefore in proportion he cost a lot more while we've been waiting. There is no doubt Newton has potential and he has a very low cost. Like I suggested he's a lottery ticket.

That's a more persuasive argument than drafting player 150.

I think Sylvia had shown plenty in his early years at Melbourne, he received a rising star nomination in his second year. He has not been consistent due to injury/attitude, but I believe he had shown enough in his early years to persevere with.

Newton took a great mark, in seven years that is all.

Speaking of Newton, it took them a year but the club finally has him listed as a rookie on the site. :)

Draftees have been updated on the lists with their numbers but the profile pics are still pre-MFC. baby steps lol.

...and on Newton I think most of us would be surprised if he emerged as a functional commodity wrt forward/ruck but we aren't losing much in keeping him an extra year. Newton hasn't done much to date and I doubt the club would argue he has. To argue the point of keeping him though should be in context of how he goes this year which is the club's focus and also remains to be seen.

If Newton made the same degree of improvement in performance that Sylvia has then Newton would be a good player.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
