Spencer is getting better, but Sunday told us nothing other than Liam Jurrah can, and would like to, play footy all year round...

I actually believe there is much potential in Jake. I find him similar to Sam Jacobs although Jacobs has bulked up a bit more than Jake has at this stage. Not sure of any exact specifications (just in case your fishing for facts - YOU KNOW WHO I'M TALKING TO) but they have a very similar gait and style, I find.

Not sure he is ready just yet to be a consistent back up to Jamar, but he can't be far away.

I really wouldn't read too much into it, I watched him play his best game in Tassie a couple of years ago only to produce doughnuts since.

Many would have him as a candidate for the MFC Tuber award, for many hes still that work in progress; for some hes just this side of an enigma.

I know Jake through a family member.

He played well in QLD and MFC saw something and gave him a rookie spot.

So far he has shown only rare moments of his potential.

He has been plagued by injury since the MFC put him on the list.

Has also had a problem of not appreciating the work needed to succeed at AFL level.

Has been given a two year deal but understands he needs to show a lot more dedication and affort to make it.

He knows he has a two year start on Gawn and Mckenzie however 2011 is the year, it is put up time.

Has also been told to "go for it" being timid will not get you a long career in the AFL.

So the long bomb was proberbly due to a more "go for it" attitude.

I expect we will see a more agressive Jake in 2011.

Having said all the above I am concerned in the injurys he seems to sustain on a constant basis.

Also not sure he is good enough!

However the ball is firmly in his court now.

Let's all hope he does "Just Go For It" in 2011, if his attitude needed a shake up for whatever reason, and he accepts that next year it's all or nothing-Jake just might be another Jordie Mck.

Good Call, Jamar did it, Jordie did it. Allan Jeans was dead right, Football is 90% upstairs. Coaches are there to help make players believe in themselves.

That's why the draft is so often a lottery. Nobody can really tell if any kid is going to excell at the top level. They can predict, and often they do get it right.

But if the mental application is not right, doesn't matter what a club or coach does.

It is like the co-drivers used during the Bathurst 1000, until the race begins the teams are guessing always as to how those drivers will cope. (Nobody practises going 3 cars wide into a corner!)

I'm sorry to say, but at this stage Spencer makes Mark Blake look like an AA ruckman. I know he is rather new to the game and raw (being from Queensland and all), but one cannot help but think that part of the reason (if not all of the reason) that he was drafted, is because he is over 200cm tall. Spencer to this stage, has not shown any signs that he will make it as an AFL player. I know he was drafted as a rookie and is tall, but nevertheless, i would have liked to have seen something from him by now (at least 1 quarter of acceptable football). He has been on our list for 3 years now. Once the ball hits the deck, we only seem to have 17 players on the ground, when Spencer is rucking. Harsh, but fair view IMHO.

If you ever get the Chance-even as a passenger, do a lap around the Mt. Panorama Circuit then you will fully understand what i mean. Practising and the actual race are 2 very different things. It's why a lot of international drivers come to Bathurst each year and completely fail because the Track just spooks them right out.

You cannot just teach that stuff, the driver has to experience it for themselves.

Same can be said for a lot of Footballers, You cannot teach mental pressure completely, it has to be experienced, and if a player doesn't fully embrace that-they usually do not succeed.

I really hope that this mentality isn't applied to a 20 year old Gawn or Fitzpatrick.

Setting them up for a fall at the minute with the glowing praise and expectation - JCB even said he would be the third player he would draft out of everyone on our list...

I wonder how we perceived Jamar when he was 20/21.

Expecting a ruckman to "do something" inside of three years of being drafted is hardly fair.

Spencer has just turned 21, he has already played a few games, he has had to grow into his body, he is learning all the time, two years on the full list no concerns about being cut for those two years, go for it......again he would not be there if the FD thought there was no hope.......

Jake Spencer, the best he's ever looked in his career with in the intra club match at Casey Fields earlier this year. He kicked 2 great goals to begin the game. I don't think he should be getting many games, he isn't a very good ruckman and a dreadful decision maker. I think we are at our best when Jamar is rucking by himself.

No one on this site should be writing him off yet. We know fisrt hand how long it can take for a ruckman to impact a game in a positive way.

Some of Jamar's stats early in his career have to be seen to be believed.

His break out season was in 2006 where he played 22 games, and averaged an enourmous 4 possession a match, averaging less than 2 kicks a game, averaging a HUGE 10 hit outs a match.

Until Jamar was 24 he was hopeless.

Spenser is rated highly by the club. He's aggressive at the contest. At the moment he's uncoordinated, but he does have some potential, or the club wouldn't rate him.

He might be a dud, but it would silly to totally dismiss him just yet

That is why I started that 'Backing Jamar' poll - too many people expect these kids to grow into their bodies and deliver far sooner than nature will allow.

Quit setting yourselves up for a fall and stop expecting Spencer to come on next year in any meaningful way, let alone Gawn and Fitzpatrick.

There was a reason we went after Hale.

I have come to the point where, as we are not in contention next year, we should give Spencer and extended run even if he is struggling to make an impact. I realise that won't be ideal but we have to start forcing that structure that we want in the future, even if some of the players aren't ready.
