If Nathan Jones goes...

If MFC think they can just dispense of loyal players who have given their all for this club over the bad years and not be given a chance to take part in it's successful future when they still have something to offer, maybe they are ahead of themselves.

Nathan Jones in my mind has been the heart and soul of the side for a long time, no Ablett or Judd, just a gutsy tryer who has given his all for the club. To trade him now would be an act of betrayal.

Yes we have young players trying to force their way into the side, but they have to make it on their own terms. Players like Nat should not be forced out for easy passage for these guys.

Coming so soon after his injury in the last game, no recognition in the B&F and still unsigned for next year, Nat has every reason to feel [censored] off with the situation. I for one will be really f*&%ed off if he is traded.

Lose Nat and McDonald in the same year and the club is putting everything on the line. Who will answer if it back fires? Nat deserves to mix it with the best and I will support him to the end.

I like Jones but we already have the same type in Moloney and if one has to go then it has to be Jones for me. Would still be disappointed though.

I'm not sure what you're referring to. Is there some public news? However, I do know if Jones is gone there are absolutely reasons for it.

Bit of a misleading thread title there mate.

We need him for a few more years. His disposal is not good and I can't see it getting better.

I think Mark Twain's famous line comes into play here.

And he isn't a Flag Core, so he is vulnerable, but that doesn't mean he is gone. I would say that a third of premiership winning team are 'periphery' players. Nathan might be one.

Nate's a required player.

Those who say they can't see his disposal getting better, it will with a good midfield around him. We're still average ATM.

I think it's important that we don't get carried away with rumours propagated in the media which are then spread as fact by other lazy journos who don't bother doing any real research into the matter. It's fair to say the Jonesy doesn't appear to love his role as a stopper as he is no longer in the thick of the action and has to take somewhat of a demotion in favour of first and second year players (Trengove, Scully, Mckenzie, Gysberts).

Jones does bust a gut for the team, but is not a dream to coach. If you heard interviews with our previous midfield coach Paul Williams in reference to Jones, Williams was always saying that Jones needed to stop trying to do too much and follow his instructions. It might be a case where Jones thinks he is better than the football department do, and that they have never quite seen eye to eye. That might be reflected in this year's B and F.

If Jones stays, which I certainly hope he does, he must accept that playing as a tagger in this up and coming midfield is a privelege and commit himself to become the best run-with player in the comp. His foot skills are very good for a tagger (Remember Simon Godfrey?), and he has the engine, though not the speed, to run with the best in the comp.

If true that Jonesy wants some answers, great, because hopefully he comes away 100% clear about his role in the team and can focus on that for the up-coming pre-season and beyond.

It must be said that based on the potential of the kids on our list he will struggle to win a spot in any role come 2013, however, until that potential has been realised, it would be crazy to trade Jones.

That said, the club will only get rid of Jones if he isn't happy with the role they want him to play, or unless of course they plan to trade him for someone like S Salopek...which would be seen as a minor improvement to our list and no loss of experience.

It is frustrating to hear that a player who has given everything to the club, while is wallows at the bottom of the ladder, might be moved along at the age of 22. There is a reason for everything and you have to have faith in the football department whose job it is to decide these matters. I trust the department and am confident Jones will stay or there will be a bloody good reason if he goes.

Cheers.

Nate Jones is our Blue Collar Worker. He aint pretty a lot of the time, but he is tough.

When he leaves the Ground either as a rotation or injured player that is often when you realize how much hard work he does.

If Nate goes who will we have to do his job??

I want him to stay-unless HE wants to go.

I want him to stay because he is a passionate Demon with guts! But we do have similiar players in Moloney and McKenzie.

Jones, Moloney and McKenzie are very slow defensivly. Not good chasers! And all 3 ar'nt very versatile.

Is there room for all 3? No. Not in our best 22 anyway.

Opposition midfielders have field days running off these blokes. That is damaging to any team.

I dont like saying it this.

But if Jones is offered a better contract and opportunity at the Suns or elsewhere. It might be in his best interest to go...

Thats reality!

Small Defender.

S Salopek, yes please.

I'd be keen for Jones to stay.

Not making the top ten of the B&F was probably disappointing but maybe it is shaped a little by expectation, who knows.

Can't see a strong argument for offloading him. I'd be really worried if this was some kind of falling out or disfavour.

But at the moment, it is all a storm in a teacup in a cupboard labelled 'rumour'.

Mind you, we've already seen that the Gold Coast are targeting players named Nathan.

do you promise?

Where do I sign the petition to pack his bags?

Honestly, can you possibly be serious?

I think Mark Twain's famous line comes into play here.

Nice use of the term "flag core".

Soon we'll be hearing Caro use it on Footy Classified.

Jones, like Brock, suffers from an inability to be effective anywhere other than the midfield.

He's an average tagger too. He'll get better with time, but he won't get faster.

Not flag core I'm afraid.

Expendable for mine, but it's all dependent on getting something half-decent in return.

Demon SG you are spot on, I'd rather have a Jones than a Tarrant or Nathan, Bloke is young and it's a good ob that he is hard to coach but do you reckon the're not happy to work with that?

I'm surprised you're still here. Surely someone whose support for the MFC is so fickle would have left when Woey or TJ or Robbo or any one of countless other players were shown the door.

love the `FLAG CORE`

Jones is suffering from the Brock syndrome. smart enough to see the big picture. doesnt want to be the next Miller.

I am still dirty on the club for getting rid of the engine room of our midfield Simon Godfrey.

As someelse said players who are not Flag core are vulnerable.

And if we left it up to supporters we would trade and delist no one and have 87 players on the list for good depth.

This guy has already "quit" Demonland once (had his account removed and everything) - but he seems to be back, so...

and so??

Good article. No-one doubts Jones' courage - he'll run thru brick walls for the club. but that's part of the problem. Breaking tackles is difficult even if you are built like Matthew Pavlich; it's very tough if you're only 181 cms.

I never knew Mark Twain said that...

;)

Fringe players like Jones evoke little to no emotion in me. I couldn't give a toss if he's here next year, or not. I'll back the footy departments decision.

It's all about winning a flag.

  • PREVIEW: Geelong

"It's officially time for some alarm bells. I'm concerned about the lack of impact from their best players." This comment about one of the teams contesting this Friday night’s game came earlier in the week from a so-called expert radio commentator by the name of Kane Cornes. He wasn’t referring to the Melbourne Football Club but rather, this week’s home side, Geelong. The Cats are purring along with 1 win and 2 defeats and a percentage of 126.2 (courtesy of a big win at GMHBA Stadium in Round 1 vs Fremantle) which is one win more than Melbourne and double the percentage so I guess that, in the case of the Demons, its not just alarm bells, but distress signals. But don’t rely on me. Listen to Cornes who said this week about Melbourne:- “They can’t run. If you can’t run at speed and get out of the contest then you’re in trouble.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit.
Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

For a brief period of time in the early afternoon of yesterday, the Casey Demons occupied top place on the Smithy’s VFL table. This was only made possible by virtue of the fact that the team was the only one in this crazy competition to have played twice and it’s 1½ wins gave it an unassailable lead on the other 20 teams, some of who had yet to play a game.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

In my all-time nightmare game, the team is so ill-disciplined that it concedes its first two goals with the courtesy of not one, but two, fifty metre penalties while opening its own scoring with four behinds in a row and losing a talented youngster with good decision-making skills and a lethal left foot kick, subbed off in the first quarter with what looks like a bad knee injury.
