Bye Bye Bate?

Heard from a good source today that Matty Bate has signed a contract with the Gold Coast, and Bailey will not play him for the Dees for the rest of 2010. Personally I don't think it would be the biggest loss to MFC, but I'm interested to hear the response of other supporters if this were to be found true.

Obviously a lot of these posts end up being BS, but hey it's a forum and just thought I'd share what I heard.

Bate is not being played due to poor form.

He's slow and has the turning circle of the the Titanic.

He needs to improve a hell of a lot if he wants to be part of the future of the MFC

Source or GTFO

I'm joking, but seriously

It seems that these rumors come about when players aren't getting a game. I can't judge on others clubs but in Baters case his form has been average at best. Unfortunately an interrupted pre-season did not see him start on the right foot. He looked to be getting there (Dogs game for example) but quickly dropped off again.

I've seen him twice at Casey since he has been back there and he his impact has been minimal.

Whether or not there is any scrap of truth to this, he hasn't deserved a game. Full stop.

Interesting. We won't get anything in return will we?

We get a draft pick based on how good the player is in the future. I think it might be in 2012. A player like Ablett would be worth a first rounder or two, where as I imagine Bate would be a second-round pick. Maaaaaybe end of the first round.

I'm not.

Source or GTFO indeed. That's a horrible rumour to spread about one of our players, if it's not true, because as much as I don't think our future is going to be damaged by his departure, I'd be pretty [censored] if any of our players basically "walked-out" mid season. It would bethe highest form of disloyalty.

No GC were more impressed on the weekend with Bates 2 goals than Millers 10 goals, they offered him a contract.

If I were GC I'd still take Miller over Bate - sure, he kicked 10 against rookies, but he's the big bodied leader they need.

So did anyone else hear about Bate supposedly signing?

Isn't everyone forgetting the most important thing here? With his complexion, Matthew Bate would fry to a crisp up North. Whatever extra money he would make at GC would surely be lost paying for sunscreen and those funny hats with a wide brim and flowing back.

I'd take Bate in a second over Miller. Bate's a good player. Out of form sure, but say what you like about him, the kid can play, and would stroll comfortably onto any list in the AFL for the right price... no matter what the sookie know it alls on here think.

If we got anything lower than 25, it'd be a loss. And considering they were only going to offer a couple of picks in that range for Ablett, you'd have to assume we'd cop a loss here.

But whatever. Worry about it when it's official.

Interesting....

Guess we will wait and see.

I have never rated Bate as much as most seem to here at demonland.

Must improve other parts of his game if he wants to play one's, but he has never really looked like a natural footballer.

I will say it again... He is not good enough to be a full forward type like Fev or Bradshaw and he is not good enough as a half forward

flanker because he doesn't have the agility and mobility to play that role.

I'm sure he would have been a great player a decade ago but the game has evolved and now needs fast, agile and skillful players.

My two cents.

Morton and Bate are unsettled according to a couple of members of this board.

What do they have in common?

They are currently out of the first 22.

I know you kids think that getting dropped is, like, the worst thing in the whole world!

But it is a fact of life that good players lose form and get dropped.

Cale needs to work on his physicality and Bate needs to find significantly better form in his high HFF role or loosen his thigh muscles enough to develop enough agility to play another role in the team.

I see big things for them at the MFC.

I wish people would stop getting so carried away when the 15th best player finds themselves the 25th best player for a few weeks or months.

Look at Batram - I thought the guy was gone at the end of the year, but he looks to me to be our Campbell Brown (when he was in defence).

Well, if he has signed then it would be old news since legally the only time he could have done so was last year. At that time he was a certain starter in every Melbourne game, one of our most damaging forwards and recently rated by Gary Lyon as potentially in the top 50 players in the league. He would likely have been quite happy with the way things were going for him at that time, so no motivation to go, but at the same time would have been a possibility from the GC perspective given that he was playing pretty good football.

Either way, it would not have been anything that's happened this year that would have an impact.

Hell, I wouldn't. I would take Bate over Miller every time.

I agree with rpfc's summary.

It would be good to see some evidence of this so called contract.

Your ego is setting in. Try and communicate like a grown up if that's what indeed you are claiming to be.

On the Bartram issue. He has always had more strings to his bow if you are comparing the guy to Bate. The only problem he had was his decision making and kicking

and both are much improved this season.

Bate on the other hand has little going for him it seems. He can be a great kick from 40 +. He can take a good chest mark occasionally. But there is nothing else.

Pressure off the ball, awareness, second and third efforts, ability to take a solid grab in a contest. As you have pointed out already rpfc, if he can't start imposing himself

as a big bustling forward who is capable of taking big contested marks and kicking big bags of goals then he needs to work on other areas and shed some kegs.

Absolute crap.

Compensation picks will be tradeable and can be used by clubs at any time within five years. First round compensation picks cannot be used until the end of the first round in the 2010 and 2011 drafts. Clubs will be required to nominate the year in which they plan to use the compensation pick before the first round of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season in that particular year.

The compensatory pick would be assessed around the player’s age (greater weighting for younger players), club contract ranking (greater weighting for club key players), onfield performance (greater weighting for strong club best and fairest performance) and draft position if less than four years experience.

This ranking system will then determine if a club is eligible for a compensatory pick in one of five spots - first-round pick, end-of-first-round pick, second-round pick, end-of-second-round pick or third-round pick. Under the model, the round-one, round-two or round-three picks would be taken immediately after the pick the club already has in that round in the draft that year.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
