Disappointing but fair. You'd think the slog would've been toughest on the young bodies. ........................................................

Really excited that Gysberts is getting a run.

Totally agree. It was planned from the start that they would be rested around now, and this timing seems ideal to me. Freshen them up before two tough encounters against the Blues and C'wood. and then they have another week off for the mid-season break. Excellent player management for the younger bodies IMO.

Yep it just makes sense, also i think this team will do quite well

Everyone's always talking about how they have to "earn their place", yet when a player gets dropped, there are posts like this.

Jordie didn't have a great game last week so .... ???

But he's still young, and sure he'll learn/improve/bounce back.

Has bartramever had a good game this year? He hasn't been dropped.

for me it really brings up the question of whether we should be selling home games to freaking Darwin.

If we had lost by a point last week instead of won by a point, it wouldve been fair to say that a home ground advantage mightve been the difference.

And if our players are too stuffed the week after that we are basically conceeding 2 days before the game it hardly seems worth it.

............. but the fact is we didn't lose, and there were so many other positives to come out of the Darwin game, I personally hope it becomes a regular fixture (preferably timed immediately before the mid-season break).

........... and further, I don't think "we are basically conceeding 2 days before the game" but you obviously are.

I have two problems with the selections as listed.

1. We're top heavy in the backline again.

2. I'd prefer to see Gys playing with Scully given that they have played together for so long. It would be good for both of them.

How long have gizza and sculls played together? I think your getting your wires crossed....

If we could organise it before the break, or in next years case before the bye that would be preferable.

And i still hope the boys win, but Scully & Trengove have become two of the more important players in our team.. if they arent injured then we arent playing our best team giving us less chance to win.

Maybe thats not conceeding but its not ideal.. is it?

I think it is ideal, for the reasons I stated at post #47.

My guess is that unlike Scullgove, Jordie will probably be given a run in the VFL and is therefore technically not being "rested" like the other two. He did miss a game earlier in the month so he probably doesn't need a rest in the same sense as the other two but will be kept match fit at Casey.

No doubt he will be back next week.

BIG BIG STATEMENT-watch out Rhino will be after you if your incorrect-I also note Grimes is in the centre.

They were due for a rest at some stage during the season, and I'm sure the Darwin game took alot out of them. On the other hand I can understand why Geelong would have been a great learning curve for them, and perhaps there was an argument for resting them from the Darwin game instead of this weeks. I guess it depends what you value; is a gutsy win on the road against good opposition better for a young players development than playing (and probably getting killed by) the best team in the league? There's probably no right or wrong answer. I'm waffling a bit.

Surely Wonna will dropped - needs`to find some fitness.

Wonna showed enough to keep his place; he was handy in the first three quarters, and totally spent in the fourth. He wasn't alone. I was happy with his output considering it was his first senior game in nearly two years, in hot, humid conditions, and I was surprised he got generally negative reviews on this site. Unless he's unfit to the point of being a liability (and he's not), the best tact to take would be to let him build match fitness by actually, you know, playing out matches. Give him four straight weeks in the seniors and he'll be fine.

It actually a reasoned sensible opinion so its no surprise you would react with capitals.

I am sure you will keep an eye on Grimes in case he kicks backwards or is undiscipline.

Great decision to rest those kids. Stoked to see Gysberts in for his first crack at the big time.

For those doubting the resting of the 3 - take a look at Nic Nat. He is still a young player and look at his form over the past couple of weeks, especially now he is the "number 1" ruck. I would hate to see JT or Scull drop off form because of too much work so early in their career. This keeps both boys on track to win Rising Star!

What is the justification in resting Trengove & Scully only, ........................what about the rest of the kids in the team that played the same game last week.

I fail to see the path this coaching panel is leading us down.

What is the point of resting two of your best players and bringing in Bruce. Surely bruce won't play!

He'll play because he's still one of our smartest and best.

Surely Jamar should have been rested.

He's rucking, get this...all by himself.

I know, right?!

Weak.

Flabbergasted. A lost experience to see the best first hand.

Yeah, it's a shame, but I reckon the footy department would have been as disappointed as we are. If they have to be rested, they have to be rested. I'll give the men in charge some leeway here. Especially if the boys come out against the Blues and Pies at the MCG all fresh and make a lasting impression. Also, that makes 2 weeks rest in the next month with the mid-season break, which suggests they might be able to make it through to round 22.

scathing, as always.

Pissweak actually.

do you also happen to see that they are the only first year players that played that game?

Or that, by the style with which they play the game, they both cover a lot more ground than most in the team?

Yep, I see that and understand that, and I am 100% behind the effort of the playing group this season for the majority of the games....................but the coaching panel, namely Dean Bailey, I am not sold on.............that is my opinion ad I am entitled to it.

The problem is you've questioned the coaching panel on the grounds that you don't understand why they would only rest Scully, Trengove and McKenzie, and not "all the other kids who played in Darwin" as well, when in fact these are the only first year players who played in Darwin.

You're free to criticise Bailey, but Enforcer is free to point out that in this case, your basis for criticising him is ill-founded.

My personal thoughts are that if Scully and Trengove are sore after last week's game (or just in general), even though it would be good to play on the best, the cats probably have the biggest bodied midfield going around also. Having them bang into their midfield all game would just make this general soreness and tiredness even worse, possibly to the point where they needed more than one game off or an injury as the result of this.

As I said though, just my thougts...

Bruce will play on Steve Johnson I'd imagine...very happy to see him back in for that reason alone.

Disappointed to see the boys rested but so happy to see the Big Gizzy debut!

Great to see Scarlett out too - I was a bit nervous about the prospect of him lining up on Watts and destroying the confidence he would have gained from last week.

Making the trip down to Geelong for the first time in a few years and can't wait...Go demons!!

Common sense approach to rest these young guys who have played 9 games in high 'milage' positions, then the added Darwin expenditure of both physical and mental exertion over an extended and differing lead up to last weeks game.

Why [censored] the young guys at cat park when we have seasoned warriors rested who can take their places. Scully, Trengove and Jordie deserve a rest. Too much to expect them to play more than, say, 18 games, this year. Especially given the racey game plan which warrants world record interchanges.

I'm comfortable with the Club, both on and off!

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
