Do we get a return out of that?? Don't know what we would have got from in Melbourne but the capacity of TIO stadium is apparently around 14,000.

And yes we got plenty of community goodwill but I'm wondering if anyone knows whether we made a profit or loss?

We were paid a decent sum to play our home game there. Size of the crowd would not have made a difference to the sum received.

This was just our first home and away game in the Top End and our second overall when you consider the Wizard Cup we played against the Bulldogs in 2006. I'm not disappointed with the crowd of 8,800 because the game was a success. Not just because we've maintained our unbeaten run at TIO Stadium but because it engendered enormous interest up there in the Melbourne Football Club and added to our connection with the Northern Territory that we've already established through Aaron Davey, Liam Jurrah, Austin Wonaeamirri and before them Matty Whelan. Our correspondent from Darwin this week was Pringle who noted in his match report that he saw young kids converted to supporting the club. As a club we're doing things for the community up there. Aaron and Liam are ambassadors for the campaign to stamp out the terrible disease trachoma that causes blindness among many indigenous people. Members of the club visited Snake Bay and Yuendumu.

Throughout all this, there's a theme and it's something I mentioned when I wrote about the Long Journey evening for the Women of Melbourne at the MCG last year - "From Little Things Big Things Grow" (thanks to Paul Kelly).

So as our team grows and our club grows, you'll find we'll get more support up there in Darwin and more members and perhaps even more sponsors. And next year we'll get 10,000 and the year after 12,000 and one day we might fill the ground to capacity (they might even have to build a bigger ground one day).

There were a few fleeting shots on my TV screen of the elation among the crowd when the siren sounded. We're winning people over with our young team and, though it's still a long way to go, I think we're going to win over more hearts around this country as the side develops. We're on our way!

Slightly OT but still somewhat relevant - as of Round 10 2010 Melbourne are sitting in 8th position for TOTAL and AVERAGE attendances.

Not a bad effort 9 games in considering we finished in 13th spot for this statistic last year.

The crowd would have been a lot bigger, but it was badly scheduled. On the same day in Darwin was Bassinthegrass, the Darwin equivalent of the Big Day Out, a music festival with silverchair headlining. They got 7,000 people to that. There was also the Katherine Cup, located about 3 hours away, and a huge event in the north.

For anyone thinking of going next year, I highly recommend it. It was by far the best football event I have been to, that includes finals at the MCG and SCG.

Spot on there. I have a mate who works at AFL NT and he was saying considering all the other events that night, 8.8k at TIO was good.

Yeah, but 3rd last in Melbourne, and we've played 90% of our games here.

Fair point, but you also have to look at who we've drawn in Melbourne and whose home game it has been:

R1 - HAW @ MCG (H)

R2 - COLL @ MCG (A)

R3 - ADEL @ MCG (H)

R4 - RICH @ MCG (A)

R5 - BRIS @ MCG (H)

R6 - NORTH @ ES (A)

R7 - WB @ MCG (H)

R8 - WCE @ MCG (H)

R9 - PA @ TIO (H)

Only 2 of our 5 MCG Home Games were against other Melbourne-based sides.

Compare that with Collingwood who has played 6 at the MCG, 5H (all against other Melbourne-sides and 1A (Carlton). Also Richmond have played 4 home games against other Melbourne-sides in that same period.

We could have had a lot more only for the car parking problem at the M.C.G they closed the car parks even before the siren had sounded. This happen to me at the Demons v Lions match and someone else I was speaking to when we played the kangaroos. There were a lot of people P#%@ off. So our numbers could have been much higher.

Excellent point. Having played Adelaide, West Coast and Brisbane at home, certainly makes a difference in the scheme of things.
