Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Can we make the 8

Because St Kilda and Geelong had, what, 38 wins all up? That's out of 88 total wins for the season. That meant wins came by less often which means there were less to go around.

12 wins will pretty much guarantee you finals. We won't win 8 more.

Thats good you have come down from 10 more wins to 8 you are starting to see the light.

mathematically it is 7 and a half for 12 it keeps getting better.

Re-read my post. We WILL NOT win 8 more games this season.

Here, I'll prove it:

Round 13: ADELAIDE - WIN

Round 14: ST KILDA - LOSS

Round 15: ESSENDON - WIN

Round 16: FREMANTLE - LOSS

Round 17: SYDNEY SWANS - WIN

Round 18: BRISBANE LIONS - WIN

Round 19: RICHMOND - WIN

Round 20: HAWTHORN - LOSS

Round 21: PORT ADELAIDE - LOSS

Round 22: NORTH MELBOURNE - WIN

That's me being pretty damn optimistic. I counted six.

That would give us 10 and a half gee essendon made it with 10 umm.

That means we could make it umm.

It's getting increasingly harder and I doubt we are much show now but that may not be a bad thing, it would be a disaster if we made it and got creamed the first week.

Most of our young kids are looking a bit tired and it wouldn't surprise me if our performances are a little erratic over the last 10 weeks.

They didn't look too tired on the Queens Birthday. We must stop this "Soft" approach. We have to start not accepting losses or we shall never rise beyond mediocraty.

Likewise

I have been. The league's much more balanced this year compared to last year. 12 wins guarantees you finals and we won't get 12 wins.

How many times have I said that?

There is no way we will make the 8 this year. Next year we are a decent chance if things fall our way, but this year we are going for upper half of the bottom 8. If we manage that I'll be thrilled.

Well, we've already proven better than Port Adelaide, Brisbane, Richmond and Adelaide, so we should be right for 12th or higher

I'd be more than happy with that, but I don't think we'll beat Adelaide. After we go to Perth, though, every game from there on is winnable. We can beat Sydney, Richmond, Hawthorn (maybe) and North at the G, and we can beat Brisbane in Brisbane and Port in Adelaide. So I reckon those 6 weeks could be quite enjoyable.

That would give us 10 and a half gee essendon made it with 10 umm.

Currently Hawthorn is 8th with 7 wins. For us to make the 8 on 10.5 they would have to win no more than 3 games for the rest of the year. North Melbourne as well.

That's not going to happen, so you can let go the fantasy of us making the finals on 10.5. eth38 has explained how Essendon getting there last year was an anomaly.

I still think we are in line for 3 to 4 more wins.

Adelaide, Brisbane, Richmond and one of Dons, North, Swans.

Anything above that is a very good outcome.

From an optimistic point of view, I think we have a realistic chance in all the remaining games other than Freo and St K. I still think the Hawks (sans Buddy) and Port are beatable

While I dont think 12 wins guarantees you a final spot it gives you a damn good shot at. If that is to happen will MFC get 12.5 wins? Either way unless we have the 6 wins mentioned earlier and a generous finals outcome on qualifying for the 8, I dont think we will have September action.

We must always aim high and strive to be the best- agreed.

However,

I simply do not see us winning enough games.

Yes we should win another 3 or 4 giving us 8 and a half. Will we win any more than that, i doubt it for the simple fact that this young team has shown that it will still be up and down. See the games against Kangas and WC as good examples. Games we thought we should win. Perhaps the players did too and we were off.

They will win some that perhaps they weren't expected too or were only 50/50. They will lose a couple that they won't in future years. The nature of the beast.

As long as we see continued development. Continued game time into our young nucleus and that risk taking corridor game style coupled with 3 to 4 more wins, then i think we will all call the season a successful step in the right direction.

Be realistic with your predictions and goals, cheer hard and watch this young team develop.

We're still too inconsistent to be able to predict where we will finish & how many games we will win. After the Brisbane win, I couldn't see us losing another game all year. However, we lost winnable games since then & our starts have been poor.

Some excellent highlights during recent games has shown plenty of optimism for the future but, until then I will be very happy if we win another 4.

Next year, yes.

Speaking of next year, there'll be pressure on us to make it for sure. I know this isn't a thread about 2011, but it raises that point.

Bailey sai 4 wins in 2009 + 50% = 6 wins in 2010 + 50% = 9 wins in 2011...

9 wins in 2011? Surely his target has changed since then.

Would his job be under pressure? Probably not. But the natives would be restless if we didn't at least get 11 or more.

Gonna be an interesting one.

I'd say bottom range expectation figures.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well I guess that tonight's effort by Richmond puts us firmly in line for the spoon again so any pretensions of top eight are well and truly gone. If we don't win tomorrow we are firmly in second last position and in danger of sliding to the bottom again.

There will be questions asked if this happens.

We're still a game and a half clear of West Coast at least, depending on what happens tomorrow :)

But if we DO win tomorrow we jump from 15 to 11. Massive game for us.

What it is is a good indication where the teams head is at. If we are beaten in a hard fought game then so be it but if we roll over like we did against Adelaide or WCE then we are a lot further away from being the team we expected at the start of the year.

It's Game Day and the Demons are once again headlining another blockbuster at the MCG to kick off the round of footy. The Dees take on the Blues and have the opportunity to win their third game on the trot to solidify a spot in the Top 4 in addition to handing the Blues their third consecutive defeat to bundle them out of the Top 8.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
