OK - The dust is settling & yes it was a disgrace of a game to kick of our 2010 campaign.

However The No.1 draft pick showed today some very exciting signs.

1. Put his body on the line & filled the hole infront of a charging Roughhead.

2. Is a running machine & is such a smooth mover across the spaces of The MCG

3. That tackle on a rampaging Luke Hodge

4. Took himself to the contest all day & slowly gained confidence to carry the ball.

Make no mistake on a very tough day for The MFC this kid showed plenty in game one

Trengove also very servicable with 22 touches & will continue to grow as will young Jordie.

Chins up everyone lets reload & enjoy the development of these kids in 2010.

Well said Old Man Rivers.....

Thought our kids were an absolute highlight today.....

Jordie, Jamie, JT, Scully, Petterd and Strauss...

I am looking so forward to seeing them all get the game time they need

Keep playing the kids Dean as I prefer to see them play than Cameron Bruce and Brad Miller right now

- sorry Cam and Brad but you were both very disappointing today and showed no senior leadership at all :(

Finally a decent post. He was amazing considering a first game. I like his attitude. Was a little bit nervous in the first with a few errant handballs, but as the game wore on he became more confident. Really love his direct approach and skill and tank.

He, Grimes, Trengove, Jordie and Strauss should be really proud of the effort they put in today. Grimes for mine would have been best on field for Melbourne had he not have turned the ball over at certain crucial times, however his defencive work was outstanding. As much as Id like to see him in the middle, I think he's a better backman.

If he hadn't have been tagging Hodge for the first quarter and a half, Grimes would have been even better.

Great game from Jordie too, 11 tackles, awesome stuff.

YOung blokes flew the flag along with Macca today.

Gonna love watching them develop this year.

I agree, Scully was a clear standout for me today at the game, got better as the game went along. He's got some real talent. Trengove was good too, particularly with some super fast handpasses (linked up with Scully on more than one occasion). A huge stepup from the West Coast game 2 weeks ago, and is going to get better.

Was a pretty good Melbourne turnout today, lots of vocal fans around.

One particular play from Trengove today I absolutely loved. Can't remember when it was but he had the ball and he knew he was about to be tackled, instead of panicing and throwing the ball away, he rode the tackle and passed it on to our advantage. At all times he knew where he was and when his teammate was.

Just a small thing but something our current older mids lack

The young kids were superb. i was more concerned with the coaching of the team, and the fact a lot of our senior players were quite embarrasing.

Big week for the MFC this week. More of that performance next week and the G will be almost empty.

One think with Trengove. He needs to be taught that the goals go all the way up. Twice he took shots from the pocket that flew at head height and were cut off. If he'd just kicked them higher they might have been goals. I've also seen him doing this sort of thing in the practice matches and NAB cup. Not a habit we want him to keep.

Two strong emotions today - was shattered with the overall effort from pretty early in the game, quarter two was aweful. Hard to believe players like Bruce and Miller were once viewed as very good - just shows what talent around you can do to lift you.

I left the game however releaved. For the first time in a very very very long time I know now we have two genuine elite superstars on our list (Scully and Trengove). It was men against boys and these two were in our best, very promising given the abysmal leadership going on around them (outside Jun Mac). This is EXCITING. Not sure about Watts yet and think Grimes can get there also but WOW we have two guns confirmed!!!

Bring on round two, can't get enough games into these boys together quick enough.

Not one to make outrageous statements but

Tom Scully is going to be the best on-baller at the MFC in my lifetime (38 years thus far)

Agreed, it was great to see him gain confidence as the game wore on... started a bit quietly, but was turning on the afterburners whenever he got hold of it towards the end... jeez he's fast.

Didn't see anything to question his kicking, either - some had said his long kicks were a bit suspect at times, but he disposed of it beautifully IMO.

If only every midfielder worked as hard as Scully and Trengove. There were a number of times today when every other player of ours was completely static, and Sculgove were the only guys working to try and make space and create an option. They need to teach the rest of the boys how to play modern football.

Don't forget McKenzie-he was a beauty today-Took his chances and did well. Courage.

It's a strange feeling isn't it. Utterly disappointed with the outcome and confirmation was received that many of our 4th, 5th and 6th year players aren't good enough but today provided us with a real glimpse into the future. Games are won in the middle and Scully and Trengove showed that they have the ability to dominate. Grimes will be very very good. He always puts his body in the right places and works his backside off. McKenzie again showed that he deserves a chance to prove himself. Add Sylvia, Blease and Morton and our engine room looks to have all the tools to push us into the top 4. Strauss had a baptism of fire and despite the mistakes showed some good signs. I wonder how long we'll have to wait for Gysberts to be given a chance. Moloney and Jones again struggled when the game was up for grabs - you know that first 30 seconds or so.

Posted

Totally gutted as everyone has said, but the boy Scully really showed what we can expect from him in years to come. I have so many doubts about what the team is doing at the moment but I have no doubt that Numbers 31 and 9 will play some great football for the red and blue in years to come.

Scully and Trengove were both awesome today, despite a horrible perfonance by the team. Strauss looked ok but coughed up under pressure. Would like to seee him on a wing or at least off the last line of defence, because he struggled under the pressure put on him by the hawk forwards and the fact that no-one could get free. Need to just play these players along with watts blease grimes mcKenzie this year. we will get thumped a lot but will also show a heap of potential. this year doesnt matter so who cares if we lose every game.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
