2009 Player Review - # 36 Aaron Davey

Aaron Davey – Aaron had an excellent season. His pre-season was the key. He got himself fit and his preparation off the field was as good as it's been. To play every game and have more than 500 disposals – particularly with his ball use – was a credit to him. Early in the year we played him behind the ball, where we could use his run-and-carry, and then as the season wore on, we played him forward of the ball. It was good to see he got his fitness level up to play in the midfield and impact games for long periods – Sean Wellman on Melbournefc.com.au

Outstanding season. Had at least half a dozen games where he was pulling all of our strings, directing us by foot. Games when he had 30 touches felt like he had 40 because of his efficiency and penetration by foot. For mine, he's the equal of anyone with his kicks in open-play. Should win our best-and-fairest, and was unlucky to miss the 40-man All-Australian squad.

Davey's 2009 has marked him as our best player, and getting him signed up recently was vital to the club. His 2010 has the potential to set up his career as one of the champions of the club. If he raises his level yet again he will surely become one of the competitions elite, a title he wouldn't be far off at the moment. His importance within our Indigenous group of players cannot be understated either. He is absolutely crucial to the longer-term development of this club through his on-field brilliance and leadership in the short-term.

Aaron recaptured a lot of his early zest for the game. Many ,myself included, had lamented his form fall offs over the years and am only too happy to see his game revitalised. The test will now be having re-signed to premium rewards that he can not only sutain these efforts but build upon them. I really think the best of Davey is yet to come. Surrounded by complemetary talent to feed and feed off I think he ought to light up games for some time to come.

A fantastic star wingman of the AFL.

Get the ball in his hands and he will do damage kicking inside 50.

Also a fine leader, who will give Brent Moloney a run for his money (all things staying the same) in 2011 for the Captaincy.

His workrate is the key; runs himself to exhaustion.

His best season to date. Now that he has signed on for 4 years, I would want this kind of form to continue for the club's sake and it's supporters. Brilliant precision with his kicking has seen him being targeted by the opposition. We need players to perform consistently around him to make his effectiveness even more damaging.

Loved his year.

Would love to see him getting a few less touches if it meant he could break more lines however. Many of his touches seemed to come with him standing still two metres from a player who had marked the ball,

Nevertheless, I think he may have re-ignitedhis career and I look forward to his 2010.

Correct

...

Sorry, couldn't help myself. I think you're right though.

If we can allow Davey to be more damaging it'll be nice, but that will be easier in a better side.

Superstar!!!

The one thing i would like to see now is him getting more of his touches forward of the centre, i think that would make a far more damaging player and would make the forwards jobs a lot easier

Great year Aaron. I reckon you can start clearing some space in the trophy cabinet for a Bluey. As for next year, we are all hoping that the emergence of a few of your younger team-mates will give you a bit more time and space to ply your trade. The sky is the limit! ................. and thanks also for your outstanding work with your indigenous 'brothers'.

He shows why footskills are so important in the modern game. I'm looking forward to the near future when we have half a dozen players that can deliver the ball the same way as Aaron.

Superstar. Loved that he signed for another 4 years, shows Flash is loyal and knows our list is building and going somewhere. Much needed mentoring for our current group of indigenous boys.

Was so damaging everytime he got the ball in 09 - rarely wasted it by foot. Set up so many inside 50's. Imagine when he has some genuine targets to kick to !!!! Hopefully will be played more fwd of centre where he might get less poss's, but will be so much more damaging for us.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
