Round 1 2010 Who is in MFC's best 22?

Rosso

Recommended Posts

As I lay in bed last night unable to sleep with my memory of Jurrah's snap over his head playing in a constant loop in my mind, I began to ponder who our best 22 assuming everyone is fit will be to start 2010...

Here is my proposed team.

B Garland Frawley Warnock

HB Green Rivers Grimes

C Davey Moloney Morton

HF Sylvia Miller Bruce

F Jurrah Bate Wonaeamirri

R Jamar McLean Jones

INT Meesen Watts Scully Trengrove

11 of these players were not in the side that would just about have knocked off the minor premiers (if we hadn't resorted to a forward line of Robbo and Whelan when we were 15pts down in the last quater!) yesterday..... NO WONDER I COULDN'T SLEEP, WHO CARES ABOUT THE FINALS, BRING ON 2010 and the Demon's premiership glory!!!

Very close to mine... I think there are some pretty promising players who haven't made the team

Players you haven't included who could come close: Pettard, Martin, Cheney, McDonald, Dunn, Bennel, Jetta, Maric,

Of that list I believe Pettard, Martin, Bennel and Maric will play most games next year.

The rest of the players who wouldn't even come close at this point in time bc of crapness or rawness: Bartram, Newton, Buckley, Bell, PJ, McNamara, Strauss, Bail, Blease McKenzie*, Spenser*

Fantastic team! I couldn't fault this line - up. Except Meesen on the bench. No room for Cheney? Bennell? Oh, help, I need to lie down.

2010:

HB: Grimes Rivers Green

C: Morton Moloney Davey

HF: Sylvia Bate Petterd

FF: Watts Jurrah Wonna

R:Jamar Jones Scully

I: Dunn Meesen McDonald McLean

Couple of points

- I'm not so sure if Wonna is an automatic inclusion however despite Jurrah's abillity to play tall and small I feel we could do with another small forward. I felt throughout the year not only did we miss his abillity to kick a goal but also his constant pressure on opposition defenders.

-Does Miller get in purely on the fact we need a big body up forward to take the best key defender from Watts?

- Will a backline consisting of Warnock, Garland, Frawley and Rivers work? Garland can almost play on any type of forward whilst Rivers and Frawley can play on the medium types.

-Will Watts be ready?

-Can McLean regain his form?

-Will Blease, Strauss, Bennell, Jetta, Maric, McKenzie, Cheney, Macnamara, Bartram, Martin pluss this year's crop of draftees scream out "pick me!".

Either way the future looks very exciting. Freaking hell I'm just looking at the players who didn't make the best 22. Not a bad little side we have going here.

I had the same questions about our 4 key pos. defenders, but they are all so good I couldn't leave any of them out.

No room for Bruce in your team???

Ha god I forgot.

Obviously he's in but who would you take out for him?

Maybe Dunn but he's impressed me so much over the past couple of weeks. I think he's a required player.

Watts?

B: RIVERS, WARNOCK, BRUCE

HB: GRIMES, FRAWLEY, DAVEY

C: SYLVIA, MCLEAN, MORTON

HF: TRENGROVE, BATE, GREEN

F: JURRAH, WATTS, WONAEAMIRRI

FOLL: JAMAR, SCULLY, MOLONEY

IC: PETTERD, MCDONALD, JONES, MARTIN

EMERG: SPENCER, BENNELL, GARLAND

I had to change it. McDonald's the captain so he has to be in, I don't like that he has replaced Bennell though, he could of replaced Aussie but that would leave us without a crumbing forward.

I'm not a big fan of Rivers but I'm not expecting Garland to do too much too early so Rivers comes back in.

I'm swinging back to Martin cause he is flexible but I do think Spencer is a better ruckman.

Could be a very interesting preseason comp if it helps answer these questions

Move Garland forward perhaps. Bails has already indicated that he will be tried there in the pre-season. I like the idea of freeing up Jurrah to apply his magic in a roaming role across our forward half.

Considering the nature of Garlands injury, i am taking a pessimistic view and won't be be holding my breath waiting for him to make a telling impact next year. The same probably goes for Blease as well.

FB: Frawley Warnock Garland

HB: Grimes Rivers Petterd

HF: Wonaeamirri Martin Davey

FF: Watts Jurrah Green

Foll: Jamar Sylvia Valenti

Int: Bate Scully Bennell Jones

Really interesting topic this one--I also spent 2 hours on it last night. The more one looks at it the more one must be convinced that MFC has to draft or trade for key forwards.

*Watts not a key forward for next 2 years. Would not be surprised if he has a year in defence like Neitz did

*Bate, ditto but never

*Jurrah, ditto, and never

Don't get me wrong, all of the above get a game but the thought of Watts or Jurrah at CHF fills me with concern.

One of the other talls has to become a key forward. Who? Perhaps Garland--not really all that tall. Perhaps Martin if he really keeps improving at the rate he has thus far, though will he ever be a good enough kick?

What this also leads to is the realisation that we need to create more list vacancies. Spencer [a real prospect I believe] Valenti and Mc Kenzie are all rookies. My impression is that Valenti has earned his place and he was left out yesterday because they've decided to keep him. Some here have been enthusiastic about Mc Kenzie--not so good yesterday I thought. So how do we recruit anybody, if, so far, we have only 3 retirees. I know nothing of Strauss but I recall people raving about him. Bail to be delisted or does he have 2 years? Mc Namara? I recall Bell and Newton have a contract?I must say I thought the skipper would call it quits, but obviously that's not his plan.

So, how do we fill a real weakness for the next year or 2? And yesterday we heard the question asked-would we give up the priority pick [not Scully} for Sandilands? Cometti says yes--do we?

I thought the exact opposite with Valenti. I think it would be an ordinary decision to promote Valenti too many players similar to him. McKenzie was OK no need to promote him though he can still have another year on the rookie list. Spencer is the only 1 we need to promote.

Unfortunately he is Captain and will be in the side Rd 1 and presumably for most of the season so long as his form permits.

Others who should be pushing for selection over the course of the year:

I have a solution for your problem Rhino.... replace Macca with Davey (who you have left out of your best 22) and make him captain.... Dees win the flag... no problems

Exactly, but I'm not sure that his pre-season form next year (assuming a full list) will get him a guernsey.:wacko::lol:;):o:huh::rolleyes:

Right now with a fully-fit squad he wouldn't be best-22 (IMO) so add Scully and Trengove and possibly we see some of Blease and Strauss...

His last 6 weeks were solid.

He will play BP and a little on ball and play most games.

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
