Trengove/Butcher/Panos/Jetta dilema

With Melbourne now all but assured of picks 1 & 2 in the draft there have been several opinions on who we should take with pick 2. Early on most people were keen on Butcher, however since the U18 carnival many have now jumped on the Trengove bandwagon, myself included.

Dean Bailey himself made comment that Melbourne would like to add a quality midfielder (we know Scully is ours) and a quality tall through the draft. Many are hopefull that Panos may get through to our pick 18 in the draft however what if this is not the case.

Melbourne must do their homework in order to try and scope out whether Panos will still be available at pick 18 so we may obtain our desirable Scully, Trengove, Panos trifecta. Or should Melbourne potentially look at the Scully, Butcher, Jetta trifecta, this way assuring themselves of a quality tall and 2 gun midfielders.

Another option may be trying to move our pick 18 higher up the order, for example Jamar (whom some have suggested may be looking to move) & pick 18 to Adelaide for pick 12?

Only time will tell and I'm sure the Footy department will consider these things but I'm confident in saying and I'm sure many will agree with me that Melbourne need to make sure they are able to recruit either Butcher or Panos to go with the 2 gun midfielders, be they Scully & Trengove or Jetta that we will recruit.

I agree..Melb must do a lot of work to ensure the maximum value of its picks. As I see it as we have 1 and 2 we literally have teh pick of the bunch...after that who knows. So much will depend on trade week and the final composition of picks as to who may or may not still be around come 18.

We need real quality in the middle.. Sculy and trengove will provide thatfor years to come. I think we will somply have to apply the old adage of "best player available " at 18, if indeed we still have 18

I like what i'm seeing in gysbert.

My question is will we be happy with scully, trengove, gysbert (panos, carlile? still available)if that's the FD's view of best available? All mids, no kpp.

FWIW i think with pick 18, we will have a slider and still get a good player. That player might've not been there with pick 20+ which for a long time, i thought we would get.

Pick 18 is still a good pick and shouldn't be glossed over with thoughts of a weak draft. btw more then happy to stock up on mids. Can't have too many good mids.

I have absolutely nothig to base this on.i.e solid info but I believe we will slightly better our third pick come trade time. either we'll improve that pick or gain a player to negate so much concern over it.

I think we have to have those 2 mids. Our engine is OK but not premiership material. Do you go for another mid type in Jordan ( Gysberts) or look to groom someone in a specific role(s)

So for me the question is... does pick 18 (or whateverit becomes ) of more value in the dradft or in trade?. And in trade, with a focus on a particular type.

Surely we have learnt our lesson with picking for positions (Luke Molan??). With high draft picks you pick the best available!!!! Scully and Trengrove for me! Can never have to many gun mids! And we dont really have any at the moment!

there's no way of knowing who the best availble is, it could be scully, it could be butcher, it could be Trengove......etc

if they make it at all.

I'm happy for MFC to make the call, on who to take.

if picks 1 & 2 give's us anything, it's hope.

Going into the draft all clubs list their order of best available players, who they THINK are the best available players. I do not think molan was listed as the 9th best player in his draft but i believe they took him ahead of others because he filled a need. What i am saying is i hope they do not do the same thing in this draft as i am hoping we have learnt our lesson that you need to take the best available player regardless of position. Especially when you are rebuilding a list like us.

I am not at all sold on Jetta. I really don't think he belongs in the list with the other players mentioned. From the footage i've seen he's fast and nimble, but not the best kick, not the smartest player and tends to be selfish. I'm sure there are plenty of other players we could take who tick the same boxes. Maybe take him if he's still going in the third round.

I think you will find that Prendagast said that and that was early in the year. A reporter asked Bailey just last week who we would want to pick up in the draft and he said that he wanted players who could use the ball properly so we can get it into the forward 50 cause we are the worst side when it comes to forward 50 entries. That tells me that we are almost certainties to get Trengrove. We are also 1 midfielder short from where we wanted to be this year cause Brisbane beat us to Redden.

What do you think recruiters get paid to do?

They don't have a crystal ball. One of the main things they look at is potential. Ask Luke Molan what can happen next.

Although i am no expert, i would compare the whole scully / trengove / butcher dilema to the draft in 2001.

#1 hodge

#2 ball

#3 judd

#4 polak

i consider scully = judd , trengove = hodge, and butcher = polak

The recruiters should go with best available, that is the golden rule with drafting with a first round choice.

Panos = Most Over-rated player by the general football public in this year's drat class

He is Tom Rockliff 2K9

Says who?

I didn't rate Tom Rockliff last year, even debated that point with a freind who liked him.

I think he's too slow comparative to his height.

Molan wasn't considered a top 10 pick he was considered as a pick around the mid 20's. Daniher said he wanted a CHB and to get the best 1 available. Too bad it was a midfielders draft and the selection ended up being a flop. Everyone considers Scully, Trengrove and Morabito as the best players in the draft so they know who they are. In the end it may not turn out that way cause 1 player may go backwards or another may come from nowhere. If they pick Butcher they will be doing a less risky version of drafting Molan cause we will be drafting him out of desperation in finding a key forward instead of recruiting the best player in a midfielders draft.

Guest Rojik of the Arctic

I've bounced back and forward on this one but now I believe that mids are the way to go. The way the game is going a Jurrah/Watts/Bate forward line with some fast and good ball users around them will kick a winning score more often than not. If we get it in there often enough even Newton could be a three goal a game player.

I was all for the 2 mids and a kpp at pick 18.

But none of the kpp's in this years draft really stand out, so far. (Panos being the best available in my opinion)

Now........ What if we were to trade a player plus pick 18 for a first rounder ?

PP - Scully

Pick 1 - Trengove

Pick 6-9ish - Rohan

As stated previously, with an elite midfield delivery into the forward line the likes of Watts, Jurrah, Bate, Sylvia, Martin, Jamar pinch hitting forward etc will be able to do the job.

We will probably see a very dynamic game style from the Dee's going forward. Where mids will be kicking more goals along with the smaller forwards.

Trengove and Rohan have also proven that they are more than capable forwards as well !! ;)

I see Butcher as the most overated player. Does nothing ppl have really got to get over his height. Everyone loves a guy that can take a contested mark but really the game is changing all you have to do more so now is beat your direct opponet. I would be absolutely shattered if we took Butcher at 2.

David Neitz was only 193cm.

taking Butcher is far less risky than taking molan.

Butcher is considered in the top 5.

Luke molan had a load of injuries...that's my understanding....next we'll see people having a go at Troy Broadbridge.

Yes but Luke Molan when delisted went to Frankston in the VFL and couldn't even get a regular game with them.

You're 100% right - Butcher is the most overrated.

I guess I just take it as read.

Because of injuries mate.

THat guy had a horror run - there is a fantastic article written about Luke Molan that was in the age last year.

Look it up, its worth a read and worth understanding what actually happened to that young man before passing judgement.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
