Ooh, I forgot to mention this. Last night on The Footy Show, Hutchy mentioned that Melbourne is going to extend Bailey's contract by 1 year around March/April next year. The decision seems to have been made already, from the way Hutchy sounded. But if they were so certain on him coaching in 2011, why not sign him now?

No Queen's Birthday is when I would start looking at his contract. I wouldn't sack him during the year unless the club went seriously backwards. If we are say 2 and 9 by then than I would wait til the end of the year to see how we go. If we are 4 and 7 then I would seriously consider giving him a 1 or 2 year extention. If we are 0 and 11 then I wouldn't worry about looking at it at all.

If Bailey can get us above the bottom 4 with a minimum of 6 to 8 wins then he deserves another contract, but if we keep playing like we have been playing in the past 3 years then it's time to find a new coach.

Are this good in front of a mauling press when we are 2 and 9?

And if you get to season's end in 2010, Bailey will want a proper commitment from the Club and new contract for 3 years will you give it? If you are not prepared to do that you should be looking to sack him and replace him. Giving him a measly one year extension after 3 years is a vote of no confidence and the coach you want in 2011 will go.

There may be another thread along these lines but does anyone wonder why GLyon has "suddenly" changed his mind re coaching. Is it because he sees the ease that Voss and Buckley (kind of) has had in stepping straight into senior coaching role that he has allowed himself to think about coaching. I don't know if anyone would deny that they would love to have the great one back at the club in a coaching role. Can GL see what an amazing couple of years that his old team has in front of them that is encouraging him to step up. He can always go back to his media role. If in all this there is even a slight degree of truth where does this put Dean Bailey. He has put the hard yards in and developed the team to where they may/will make the finals. Why shouldn't he take them the whole way and Garry goes and coaches another team. Would we do a Collingwood and do everything to secure him for the future. Should we. We have been fairly cut throat with our player departures would we be so cut throat with Dean Bailey if GL was suddenly available to coach his beloved Dees.

It was proffered that Dess will extend Baileys contract next march. I said in reply...what does it really matter , why defer til season's start..as opposed to now. You see his time with us is exactly the same whether youextend it now or then. You understanding thiss so far ?

Might as well do it now as then if this is the case as it aqdds to the stability of the club.

You're just assuming Garry will come in when the cream rises, aren't you?

Bailey will have coached at AFL level for 2 years, he's got next year to come and if the rumours are true a 1 year extended contrcat could come soon. That's 4 years as head coach. One year less than Wallace's 5 year plan (LOL). That's a fair stint. So if not much progress is made over 4 years, don't you think the club has a right to consider it's options for perhaps a new coach going forward rather than locking Bailey in on another 3 year deal? Regardless of what G.Lyon is doing.

I wouldn't touch Gary Lyon.

No relevant coaching experience and if he is to coach in the game it will be 13 years since he played.

If Bailey is not the coach we want then going into 2011 when our critical period of achievement 2012 to 2014 I would want an experienced capable coach to take us to that flag not an appointee with taints of "job for the boys" and no cred or experience as a Coach.

If Bailey is the right person..fine then appoint him for that crticial period at the appropriate time.

Lyon was a good captain, a fine player and could have a positive impact and influence on this Club. Unfortunately I am not prepared to risk our best chance of a flag in 50 years on a "favoured son" who now happens to put his hand up at just the right time to coach when he has not done the hard yards required.

I am a great believer in Dean Bailey and think he will be a Demon for a long time to come. Give him his 1 year extension now. Thats 4 years! If we arnt playing finals in his 4th year I would be disappointed bar an injury riddled season.

However, I believe Todd Viney should be next in line if we need to go down the path of a new coach.

1 year is out of the question. I'd give him 2 years if he can do the minimum of getting us out of the bottom 4 and 3 years if we can get our wins into double figures.

It's only affirmation and belief in a vision if it happens this year.

If he gets 1 more year sometime next year it looks like we don't think he's up to it and we are hedging our bets.
