How many is the maximum you can remove from your list in one season? Would we take 8 off our main list?

Newton, how could I forget he was contracted. If PJ is signed as well that leaves Whelan, Wheatley, McDonald, Robertson as my sureties with Buckley, Bell, Miller, Dunn and Bartram the other's in the barrell. They'd have to get games from here on in IMO.

We won't re-rookie Valenti so he's pretty much 100% gone, is there a minimum turnover of Rookie-listed players aside from the 2 year rule?

I love Robbo and have followed his career for 10 years. I think he has been (and still is) a wonderful part of our club and a joy to watch.

For this reason, I want him to retire at year's end, on his terms and while he is still performing well.

I would hate for him to spend his last year in and out of the team. He is so much better than being labelled a 'list clogger'.

Let him play out the year, give him the farewell match he deserves, and he can retire on a high. He deserves nothing less!

Don't be so sure that Wheatley will be delisted, yes we are a young list and we are all wanting to see the young kids come through but they do need support. A good list has a wide range of ages on it and Wheats is surely one of those older bodies (he is only 27 I think) that we must keep playing. Our draft penalties from a few years ago have really starved us of talent at that age group and I just think that our youngsters won't benefit from a complete clean out at the top end. I also think that Robbo is needed as long as he takes the first defender. Both of them will benefit from a proper pre-season so hopefully they will go around again

45,

Newton and mabe even PJ are contracted for next year. They wont be paid out early.

Juice and or PJ could be traded... Yes, i realise there is that question of who might want them.. and why.. who knows. Some team may think juice deepens their stocks and worth the perserverance. PJ..again who knows the thinkings of some other clubs but if MFC cant see a gig going forward for him post '10 you might shop him around..all conjecture of course.. but another scenario that falls ino that possible if not entirely probably category

Valenti and Hughes are rookies that have been elevated onto the main list. They will be rookies at year end and I would suggest that they are likely to go. This does not affect the main list.

Valenti... can see him thinking of himself as the hard luck story...so near..yet.. If we bolster our midfield stocks as many predict then where does Valenti fit in ?? Still if he was a second fiddle mid behind the likes of Scully ∨ Tregove then he might be a curious and effective member yet. Or he's delisted

7/8 of these guys will be gone by the end of the season you'd think, ages as of March next season in brackets:

Whelan (30), Wheatley (28), McDonald (33), Bartram (22), Bell (24), Dunn (22), Buckley (22), Johnson (25), Miller (26), Newton (22), Hughes (23), Valenti (23) and Robertson (31).

4 of our 6 oldest players in that list - highlights where we're at IMO.

Backmen

Whelan, Wheatley, Buckley, Bell

Mids

Bartram, McDonald, Johnson, Valenti

Forwards

Dunn, Miller, Newton, Hughes, Robertson

Bold are the players I feel are almost certainly gone. 2-3 of the others will go I think

You believe Bell will survive? No hope, I think he'll be traded for a fourth rounder just because he's a good bloke like Whopper to Port a couple of years ago.

If Robbo stiill has the Spring in his ankles at years end he should get another 12 months for sure, we will no doubt lose a lot of older players at years end. I don't think it would be wise to get rid of all our older players in one sweep.

But lets wait till years end-8 more games for the players to prove their worth to the coaching staff, Board & us the members.

I reserve all judgement until after Round 22.

My point is that we can lose some of the senior players from our midfield and defence, because there are young guys who have either stepped up already (Grimes, Frawley) or will step up at some time over the next 12 months (Morton, Cheney). And enough experienced players will remain in midfield & defence so they don't have to take the major responsibilities until they're ready for it.

But KPF is not the same. I'd love it if Jack & Stef, for example, started ripping it up as KPFs before the end of this season (though not ripping it up enough for us to win more than 2, obviously) - nice fantasy, but not going to happen. OK, maybe preseason comp 2010 - highly unlikely. Or 2010 season - possible, but probably still too early.

I want Robbo to help keep the pressure off these young guns until we know they're ready to take it. I'm happy to concede that Robbo staying on may not contribute much to team performance, but it's making a substantial contribution to team building. Not the ideal situation, but I'd hate for Jack's career to be seriously damaged by having his body & confidence smashed because we let Robbo go before Jack was ready to take on the No.1 defender each week.

Just don't see why we should risk unnecessarily sacrificing a great young player just because some have major grudges against Robbo, even if they have good reasons for those grudges.

I think you make some great points. I'm still very much sitting on the fence regarding whether Robbo should play on next year or not. Part of me is in agreeance with the keeping Robbo as "protection" for JW, LJ and Stef stance. If he's taking the best defender every week, then that's a huge plus to having him around, and i think it will definitely aid in the development of those young fellas. As long as he can continue playing decent footy this year and finish with around 35+ goals, then you'd think he'd get an extra year. Obviously, how well he plays will dictate the quality of his opponent.

The other part of me is in the "retiring gracefully" camp, as outlined by Jaded (quoted above).

As it stands, i'm 50/50 on the whole situation. Whether or not Robbo gets a gig next year, to me, is totally dependant on him being able to play regular decent footy for the remainder of this season. More games like Saturdays will sway me towards keeping him on. More games like his performances against Collingwood and Essendon, and i'm all for farewelling old Russ.

Funnily enough, i think Brad Miller (and to a lesser extent, Newton) plays a big part in Robbo's future too. If he can step up and hold down the FF position deep in the attacking 50, then the need for Robbo in 2010/11 is greatly lessened. Unfortunately, Millsy hasn't been in the best of form and is currently out of favour, and playing him deep is something we've tried in the past with mixed results. After 100+ games, he's at the stage of his career where he'll take over from Robbo, if he's good enough. That seems doubtful at this stage though. If he only he were a natural goalkicker...

Robbo has allready been told by Bailey he wont be resignsed by the club and has agreed to play with his mate Yze in the Shepperton league. ( think thats where Yze is from) before you all ask who my source is , its Tim from City of Manningham council whos mate is good mates with the Yze. tell me when im wrong.

It depends on how deep we go into the shallow 2009 draft. It isn't opinion, it's fact backed up by Prendergast, the eligibility changes have meant that BP is picking from kids born in an 8 month block and not the full year.

So if we go Picks 1, 2, 19, 35, 51 and PSD1, that is 6 places.

And 6 deletions. Wheatley, Whelan, Junior, Robertson, Bell, and Dunn would be my 'most vulnerable' at this stage. But I really don't think, unless we are trading, that getting rid of 8 or 9 this year is good for the health of the list.

Don't delete for the sake of deleting.

In which case his big effort against WCE is all the more remarkable.

In which cae I agree with Jaded, he deserves the big send-off.

In which case Newton & Miller, much less effective IMO, will be needed for at least another year for similar reasons to those I put for Robbo.

Not good?

Very Early Call on that one-I shall wait & be very interested in the outcome. The way Robbo went hard for the ball on saturday looked to me as if he wanted to play september one more time.....

Then its a fact. Its cant be disputed at all.

I am not surprised in the least if you rumour is actually fact. Is your reference to Yze, Adem Yze's brother? A Yze currrently plays with BH Hawks

1. Robbo is coming off a very serious injury that kept him out of the game for 12 months.

2. Robbo has had no pre-season (at all)

Thank god some of you guys don’t work in our recruiting department as you truly have no idea.

The first point you bring up is that he has come off a serious injury! He's on the wrong side of 30 and has recently been injured! Alarm bells are ringing.

He's been awesome for the club, he's one of my fave players. Plus im from Tasmania, which makes him all the better in my eyes.

But its his time to go this year.

Delisting - Robbo, McDonald, Whetley, Whelan.

Maybe - Bartram, Dunn, Buckley (personally i think bucks will stay)

Bell, Newton, PJ - are all contracted.

He turns 31 this November.

He is going to have to play a very solid last two months to get another 1 year contract.

It's just where we are at.

That's not to say we shouldn't enjoy the career of a player who has given a lot to this club and entertained us for a decade.

Couldn't agree more.

There is also the consideration that a number of the ineligible players will be available in the coming years as trades for 'AFL ready' players. We cannot afford to reduce our potential bargaining chips (over the next 4 odd years) by holding on to senior players that would reduce the development of potentially 'eligible' player pool, and not be in the mix themselves. It is however a fine line.

why remarkable, knowing its your last year you can do what he is doing or be brought back in round 22 like White and Yze. the game before he was dropped , trying to kick a goal while lying down , what did that say.

I'd pay out the contracts on Bell, Newton, PJ before I delisted Robbo. He might have some faults but he will keep a good backman occupied while the childrens brigade learn their craft in the forward line.

My point exactly.

My only reason for keeping Robbo is so that Jack et al are not forced to take the No1 defender each week before they're good & ready. And I'd much rather Robbo do that for them than Newton or PJ. That would be Robbo's massive contribution towards the next flag.

The Club should have learned alot from "gifting" pension years to Yze and White in recent years.

Robbo's time is up and it has been for a while. Thanks for the memories but you are not part of the future or the culture that is required with it.

White was still playing good football in 08. I dont see how he was given pension years Rhino?

Now, IMO, your onto it.

We have to recruit kids, some will be ready almost strait away, some young forwards will take a year or 2. We'll need a couple of forwards who can work hard & chase hard next year to help with some team wins.

IMO Miller & Newton are required for a year or 2 to oversee the transition of the New forwardline.

Oh dear. He was embarrassingly deplorable in 2008 and was dropped. He was finished in 2007. And you dont see it?

Have you started smoking something stronger?

Great idea to pay out contracts earlier. Puts you offside with player/managers and will surely please the AFL who are dipping into emergency funds to keep us going.... and for what to keep a performing clown on the ground.

Good work
