I like it, don't really understand the celtic music soundtrack, but I like it. Lets hope that there are no "issues" with this one like there were with the NRL one.

Was the theme song for "The Departed."

I actually can't stand the ad, think it looks a little ridiculous.

Not as bad as the NRL ad though, not only Stewart - but their State of Origin ad depicts Etihad Stadium as the Coliseum, now that is just blasphemy!

I don't mind it at all. It's not designed for us its for the person who is yet to follow the Great game. After Hearing the Music i just had to watch "The Departed" again, not that i need too much encouragement!

Well. Scorcese DID use it on the soundtrack for 'The Departed', but I believe its an old Dropkick Murphys song.

Could've been a cover actually, not quite sure. But quite a bit older than the film. A classic though.

Edit: seems its not THAT old. 2003 by the looks of it, then re-released on the Dropkick Murphys album in 2005.

In regards to the advert itself... I'm not sold on it.

Fantastic visuals but the 'action' pieces and the contact between players looks far too soft & staged. The players move quite slow too.

Just doesn't do it for me, but I doubt I'm in the target audience.

In fact, if you are reading this forum you wouldn't be a major priority for the AFL -- they've already got you.

Actually the NRL ad is not too bad, but had to be altered a fair amount given the unfortunate Stewart happenings, but the concept was actually pretty good, given it was kids growing up to play the sport they love and becoming the men who win the grand finals. All about the grass roots. The thing will never compare to Tina Turner but still the best executed ad for quite a while.

The gladiator one with Docklands is nothing but a State of Origin ad, it isn't selling the comp per-say, and is there only to remind everyone that we have lost another game south of the border. I can't imagine the Queenslanders will be too impressed given it was their turn in the two out three home town rotation. But I guess money talks and Victoria has paid plenty for it. But again the ad itself is not so bad with the concept of modern gladiators, but I will grant you that Etihad stadium is no Coliseum. but for the NRL in Melbourne its just going to have to do!!!

And I actually quite like the AFL commercial, some of the sections are excellent some a bit slow but all in all a pretty good ad, apart from the song which doesn't quite work for me.

Posted

LMAO regarding.....Tina Turner.

The AFL commercial is pretty good in my opinion, but it doesn't surpass the "I'd like to see that" campaign. Perhaps a more catchy song could have been achieved, a pass from me nevertheless.

I like the NRL State of Origin commercial promotion depicting gladiators.

Note: - The Cricket Australia promotion commercial last summer was pretty ordinary. To me, it didn't appeal to the younger generation enough.

The use of "Etihad Stadium" as the Coliseum is a disgrace. No matter how you justify it.

There is one Coliseum in Melbourne, and it certainly isn't Telstra Dome/Docklands/Etihad/Colonial stadium. Hate it. Almost as much as I hate seeing Ron Barassi in that ad about Docklands/Etihad/Colonial/Telstra dome.

I personally think it's very sad that game 3 is played in Melbourne. I do feel for those North of the boarder, regardless of my feelings toward the sport.

The NRL are still trying to promote the State of Origin and NRL in their push into the sporting capital of Australia if not the world, Melbourne. NSW and QLD understand the importance for the future of the NRL in the sporting mecca. The use of the stadium depicting a battle of two foes or gladiators in NSW and QLD within a 'Coliseum' where they will play is appropriate, for such an internationally recognised clash. Besides, I have acquaintances in both states, who make the trek for Origin clashes in Melbourne and they love watching it here. However, not so much love of those from NSW, because QLD have had the wood on them down here, with some famous victories.

You're doing very little to convince me HT. The MCG is the Coliseum, couldn't give a stuff if NRL want to pretend that the other ground is one, I just don't like it.

I know Melbourne is the sporting Capital of Australia, and can see why NRL would want to spread it here. However, a State of origing outside either state is ridiculous IMO.

45hotgod, if you had a product which you believed in and were willing to promote it and increase its awareness and exposure, don't you think you would want to put it on display in front of a packed stadium in a marketers dream that is Melbourne? Knowing that your grassroots from where your product originated, fully support you.

edit: You and I both know there is only one Coliseum, ours ;) ...the 'G'

NO they don't  !!!

How can I come back at that Queen C......"Yes they do?" :P

Believe me they really don't ;) .....

It would be like shifting a prelim or something to either Sydney or Brisbane just because NSW or QLD paid for it and the AFL want to expand the game.

No one has to understand that, especially not the team or fans of that team that is getting their legitimate home game taken away to a place, no offence that really doesn't care.

Well maybe you guys down there care a little, but not nearly as much as we do.

I understand the expansion talk I really do (although it's a bit mute given the impact the Storm really have).

But that doesn't mean we have to like or be understanding about the selling off NSW v QLD games interstate, sorry.

I never said I didn't understand why HT, I just feel for the fans that lose the game for the sake of money....Not that I'll lose any sleep over it

Point taken Queen C, well you may not understand the importance, but they do. You also make a good point as highlighted in your post. But you are misunderstood in terms of our Rugby League followers not 'caring as much as we do', Being that we Melburnians love sport, including Storm supporters/members. And when we get a clash of the magnitude of NSW and QLD - especially a decider, we will flock to it. Which is why the NRL see's it as an opportunity to get a stronger foothold in Victoria on the back of the Storms gradual success. That is why it is important for the NRL to get a bigger stake in Victoria. - As they say, "if you build it, they will come."

Fair enough some don't have to like or support or understand about the sell off S.O.O. interstate game. But at the end of the day the 'majority' of NRL supporters as a whole will back David Gallop and the NRL's decisions on what is good for their game for the future.

I never said I didn't understand why HT, I just feel for the fans that lose the game for the sake of money....Not that I'll lose any sleep over it

Fair enough then.

It's actually game one this year, not game 3, and I don't think the ad is suggesting the stadium is the coliseum but that the players are gladiators.

Stand corrected. Game 1. Just as good really to see who delivers the first blow then. Agree with your suggestion.

Well I hope they get the numbers to justify the move and while I understand why the NRL do it (I am not a fool HT), it is a betrayal of the supporters up here.

Now you can argue that it is about getting a stronger foothold in the Victorian market and that is perfectly valid and true, but I will ask at what expense?

Queensland lose a game they should have had, and the stadium will be filled mostly with either ex-pat northerners or fans flying down for the event.

The Storm have a wonderfully loyal supporter base, but it is not a big supporter base (hard to be given the AFL stronghold) and while I know (and I have worked for the NRL) about their commitment to expanding into a very foreign territory in Melbourne, the Storm could not exist if it was not completely paid for by News Limited. They don't make enough money from your support to stand on their own.

I know that the re-location of the State of Origin to Melbourne is a way of trying to garner more interest in the sport south of the border, but it is a hell of a sacrifice for us.

And it is still NSW v Queensland, and neither fan group will get to see one of these beloved games live this year.

I have to chuckle.

A New South Welshwoman saying she hopes Victoria draws a crowd. We have been through this before though, and don't wish to go back there.

But yes, I do agree, the game should stay in the territory for who it is representing

Fair enough, it's a betrayal of the supporters up north. I can understand that. As long as you understand why the NRL do it - don't forget there is alot of financial gain out of it too for the code, including Television rights within QLD and NSW (despite delays), as well as increasing the market within Melbourne.

With regard to getting the numbers to justify the move........I think it's more than likely they will be taken care of.. ;)

I love the ad. It's just a pity the dees players don't have a sponsor on their backs!

Slightly off topic, for those of you from Sydney on this thread. One of my NRL supporting mates from Sydney said they'd rather NSW win the origin than their NRL team win the premiership. Is this a view commonly held?

Very possibly harry, Origin is enormous for the league and it's a very passionate time for fans.

I would love to see my team win the Premiership (and we all would no question), but to see NSW beat up on Queensland, well that is a thing of beauty ;) !!!

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
