  1. Another ridiculous rule is the requirement to pay 95% of the allowed salary cap. It was bought in to deal with Fitzroy. A club should be able to pay 20% of the salary cap into an AFL trust fund that it can then use to pay players at their discretion. By paying into the trust fund it meets the Fitzroy requirement and it encourages clubs to manage cycles in their performance. Apologies.. I just see Dr Drake and others posted similar PS Leigh Matthews has been pushing this line for years re Brisbane... not sure he wanted to bank the money though
  2. One easy step is to get the recipient club to provide the compensatory pick (no adding points etc) That forces them to trade a player so it comes with some pain
  3. they are under pressure in the current negotiations. The lack of clarity on the new salary cap and list sizes is worrying The AFLPA has three distinct groups that it represents... draftees and under 3 years 3-7 year okay players the stars They are hopelessly conflicted as an organisation (throw in ex players as well)
  4. The only thing stopping this from being a disaster is that there are so few free agents. Statistically the number of players getting to free agency status are less than one in ten and half of those while good players don't attract mega interest (think Nathan Jones). The AFLPA have been arguing that unlimited free agency should be available much earlier in a players career (3-5 years).
  5. The problem with free agency and the bigger clubs was recognised at least two years ago when Lynch went to the Tigers. Lots of talk then about handicapping the bigger clubs.Cannot recall how it was to be done. It might have been loss of draft picks or similar.
  6. combine that with Bruce and BT = hell
  7. The problem with the modern game in a nutshell. How to solve it ?? As an aside if you were a purist and were designing a football team GWS would almost be your perfect team. The fact that the defensive game has blunted those skills is not a good sign.
  8. Does the Richmond team deserve three flags in four years? It doesn't come anywhere near the great teams that have done this in the past IMO but #@^& happens Go the near suburban felines Storm v Penrith Panthers is the bigger game !! (lots of cat teams this year as against the more usual bird teams)
  9. https://www.theage.com.au/sport/cricket/seven-and-cricket-australia-fight-over-broadcast-rights-expert-20201016-p565sl.html The Channel 7 v Cricket Australia arguments continue Next could be Nine v Tennis Australia Increasingly I am seeing reports of the magical vaccines not being available to health workers until mid 2021 which makes mass vaccination prior to September 2021 unlikely. It seems that while the trials are almost finished for the initial candidates the trial evaluation process will take around 6 months ?
  10. great article
  11. Gil has been CEO since 2014. I think he will be gone at the end of 2021 (volountarily pushed) as the game looks to recover and move on in the post covid world. Different skills are required in what will be a non expansionary market. It will be lead by the clubs who are now calling for the enquiry.
  12. spot on ... but it also underscores that the media money is heading down not up Foxtel might put up the money if they got the prime games and 7 got the crumbs
  13. On another thread we were ranking Goodwin against other coaches. Objectively he would have to be in the bottom four. These are the measures I used. Improving players Game day tactics Gameplan Team selection Player management Skill improvement Competition respect You could add other criteria but except for the "good bloke" factor which helps him in the area of player management he doesn't excel at at many if any of the others.
  14. Hi guys I'm a bit late for the Caulfield Cup but just wanted to wish you all a happy Spring Carnival. Amazed that we didn't sell the Melbourne Cup to Queensland like we did with everything else. What's the Cox Plate field looking like quality wise this year ?
  15. Channel 7 don't even pay for half of the media rights. "Seven is paying $840 million in cash and $60 million in contra for the rights, with Foxtel paying $1.3 billion and Telstra paying about a reported $300 million." https://www.ausleisure.com.au/news/afl-looks-to-extend-seven-network-broadcast-deal/
  16. yep... pity we haven't go a top ten coach
  17. If youth participation was a measure of success basketball would be the most popular sport in the country. Sydney has been in NSW now for nigh on fifty years and the market penetration has not been that great. Looking at it from the flipside can you really say that the Storm who has been the most successful team in the NRL for so many years has made major inroads into the average Melbournian's psyche. Dollar for dollar the northern state expansion clubs don't really stack up. BTW the biggest youth sport on the Gold Coast is probably Nippers
  18. go lions
  19. Storm have been the Raider's bunny in recent times so let's hope tonight is different
  20. It's growing... (strange for GWS to be calling for a review)that makes 6 clubs.... only three more required "Andrew Pridham's call for a comprehensive and independent review of Australian rules football from the structure of the AFL Commission to the game's grass roots has grown legs with club presidents across Australia throwing their support behind the Sydney chairman. In what is shaping as a test of the strength of the 18 clubs, Richmond, West Coast, Brisbane Lions, and Greater Western Sydney have joined Hawthorn's Jeff Kennett in backing Pridham. The Sydney chairman warned on Friday that the game was in danger of heading in the wrong direction beyond recovery unless it was prepared to undergo objective scrutiny for the first time in 27 years."...... While denying accusations from the AFL that his primary focus was a push to rationalise or relocate clubs, Pridham said the 18-club structure needed to be reviewed and recalled the Swans' historic and ultimately successful decision to leave South Melbourne back in 1982." https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/afl-2020-more-club-presidents-back-call-for-independent-review-of-the-afl-20201015-p565fl.html
  21. I would have picked most Demonlanders as impressionists rather than cubists. Life as an MFC supporter is much better if viewed through the mists of impressionism. After all Fuchsias and water lilies are very close.
  22. Not a bad outcome as it would give me a team to barrack for in the GF (anyone but Richmond) Let's face it a Port v Lions GF would be even more irrelevant than ever I'd be even happier with Port v Geelong for the purpose of removing the smile from condescending Queenslanders.
  23. JK has been gunning for the Commissioners for a while. He'd be happy to see Gil go. As you know the clubs agreed to the Commission concept when most of them were near broke. The power clubs are well set up now and they see little reason for the socialism practiced by the Commission. Reducing the number of clubs in Melbourne would be welcomed by SA and WA as they are convinced the competition is Melbourne centric. BTW Mergers don't necessarily have to be limited to another AFL club. I'd like to see the if there was a business case for a merger between the Storm and ourselves for example.
