Surely MFC would be awake to this and there will be compensation provided per hawthorn member entry. It would not be like the AFL to be unfair to a club.
Aside from Jurrah the players you named are all Victorians and I would think not interested in leaving Victoria and Jurrah has a special relationship with us. We would be keen not to let any of them leave.
The four Queensland boys are in a different category and I would think we would be keen to retain Petterd and Spencer. Miller is the most experienced with a strong body and leadership qualities and may appeal to GC17 and Bail will be a 22-23 year old in 2010 and may have some appeal to them as well.
It should not be forgotten that there is a go home factor with some players and some players taken by a new club in Queensland that may struggle may want to return to Victoria.
That said we of course need to keep our interstaters that we want to retain, happy and contracted.
My idea might be pie in the sky but you don't get if you don't ask.
First I think Ablett is about 28 and if he is that is probably too old for their needs.
Second I wonder if there isn't a way to do some sort of deal here. For example we could agree that if they drafted a player or two that we wanted like D. Grimes and Daw/Temel/etc they could agree to swap him or them to us for a player next year.
Third we could ask them to consider taking Newton and Meesen. Given that they need some big bodies for their VFL side next year to help the youngsters and both may kick on and additionally we pay most of their salary, we could then agree in advance to a player swap next year. This would give both boys a chance in a developing team which is more than they might have on our rookie list.
Longshots I know but sometimes you have to think outside the square.
I also think Miller cops unfair criticism. He was a late draft pick and was taken as a half back flanker. We have tried to make him our CHF only because we had no one else.
He is a solid contributor doing the 1% things and while no star he would be better with better delivery of the ball. Maybe more class in the midfield will help his game. He does work hard and lead up all of the time and is as we all know very happy to give it off, to his detriment sometimes. His kicking has improved and he has added a few metres to his kicks.
He will never be a star but as others have said not every player in the team is. He has a big body and is prepared to use it.
Until someone better comes along he will maintain his position and give his best.
As I have said elsewhere, unless we get the consent of the player I don't think we will reneg. It depends on exactly what we have agreed with the players. Again if we were to suggest that they would be paid out in full and that they were free to play for anyone in any league and earn extra money they may be prepared to give their consent. I would certainly try to free up at least one more spot. I would also try the same approach with Hughes. He has been on our rookie lists for a few years in total.
Also it was thrilling to see Luke Power's parents swimming pool and to hear that he has done very well up in Brisbane, while picks were being ignored. A JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The thing that gives me confidence with that pick is that we would have taken Gysberts or Lucas ahead of Talia and Carlton who badly needed the blues barracking Talia, also passed on him.
What are you talking about, we delisted them both and with their consent agreed to rookie them if they weren't drafted by another club.
I believe Newton might be rookied by another club, so we could get another spot. By doing what we did we got two extra players in the draft.
