  1. Nor sure if it’s been mentioned but young Charlie’s great grandfather Bob senior played 2 games for Melbourne in the early ‘40’s. So there is a connection to the club! I’ve said before - as a 4th generation AFL/VFL player Charlie has football running through his blood like few others.
  2. Tripping over a tree root while searching for your ball?!
  3. You can say that again, very exciting indeed. Although I could put together a very, very selective highlights package of my golf game over t he last 40 or so years (if I happened to have the vision) that would make you think I was as good as any golfer in the world. ps: I’m a bloody lousy golfer.
  4. I’ve seen his height listed at anywhere between 172 and 175cm. And I’ve also learnt to make little of “official” measurements. I stated in a previous post that at 17 the kid’s probably still growing and may well end up around Jack Viney’s height. And that’s more than acceptable, especially if the kid can play!
  5. Kid’s 17 years old, will probably grow a few cm in next couple of years. And anyway 172 cm is a very nice height indeed (especially for an opening bat)?.
  6. Gad Sir, The chap in the centre of the photo wouldn't be allowed in to the members reserve let alone the long room dressed that way - sockless. Let's hope the trend doesn't extend to match day wear!
  7. Thanks for that, my memory's a bit vague on the detail, however I remember thinking "wow this is it" only to have the lad fade away. Something that happened far too often in the past! But no more eh (says he typing and touching wood all at the same time)!!! Which is why I think young Harmes can still improve.
  8. I recall Cuthbertson kicking a bag against Collingwood one day, but that was it. However Eddie loved him and said he should have been playing for the Pies! Grigic's another matter. He played a good game for Melbourne at centre half forward against- not sure, but then played a very good game against Melbourne for a victorious Geelong side, so, at least a couple of good games before his lack of ability became truly apparent. Harmes has more up side I believe, and has not reached his full potential as yet. He's not going to be an A grader but decent B grade is not beyond his capabilities.
  9. Harmed is an interesting one. I've just re-visited our last season round 21 match against StKilda where he kicked 3 first quarter goals and made himself very useful throughout the rest of the match. Still young, still has great upside.
  10. Paid MCC a week ago as I naturally expected the footy club to go deep into September! And bugger me it isn't happening, but the poms are coming so I'll enjoy that. My MFC membership? Well maybe march or April when the sadness has subsided!
  11. Yelled at him in the first half. Yelled for him in the second. (Sh*t I'm a contrarian)!
  12. Dee Dee replied to Skuit's topic in Melbourne Demons
Hi Skuit, I used to enjoy watching Ajax (I-ox if I remember correctly) when living in Europe many years ago. Johan Cruyff was my favourite player, the Robert Flower of soccer i.e. graceful and elegant. I certainly remember Ajax as a powerhouse in those days. ps: how's the weed over there (no, not him, it!)
  13. Project forward 4/5 years, Clarry's played around 100 games and has improved as expected. What does it take money wise to keep him from the wolves at the door?
  14. The name of this thread should be changed from Clarence Oliver to Clearance Oliver!
  15. I bet Balls is pleased, carries #14 well. Excellent debut!
  16. Clary the clearance King ( I was going to put all "K's" but thought better of it)!
  17. Ooh, Wimin, a topic I can relate to. So: how many wimin post on this site? Are there just a token few? Or a full blown gaggle? The question must be asked for the sake of gender equality and the Ostralian way. Remember wimin make up half the crowd at matches.
  18. Dee Dee replied to junk's topic in Melbourne Demons
Matt Jones is genuine depth, and has improved on last year and should be kept. Kyle Cheney now plays for Adelaide and is doing quite well, having played most games this year.
  19. Dunny could reach the centre circle from full back with a torp, as could Paul Wheatley. But how about the long lost drop kick? Now there's a kick to bring drama back into the game, executed properly it was a weapon, executed wrongly and oh dear!!!
  20. I was about to post much the same comment. $cully, skinny legs and the others were to be the saviours of the MFC, Sh*t, Sh *t, [censored]!
  21. Agree with you, would introduce a"him and us"division: sort of modern version of gentlemen (gentleman) and players.
  22. So, can anyone on this forum tell me (and I'm sure other frustrated readers) anything about the progress of Clayton Oliver?
  23. Carlton purchased premierships many years ago, but it's difficult to do today. And imagine if we had a player like Tony Lockett on our list a few years ago, how would he perform with the team we had in (say) 2012. StKilda is proof that a star or two does not make a premiership team (not withstanding their 2010 effort). Hawthorn has a star team bolstered by a few star players: that's the formula IMHO.
  24. Somewhat off the actual topic but when I played schoolboy football I'm sure the stops were laminated leather nailed into the boots. And we would often disagree on the number and placement of the stops as well. Also like the late, great Jack Dyer I've never adjusted to seeing modern footballers wearing glorified runners (and don't get me started on the colours). In my day real men wore real black footy boots, the sort you could wear( without the stops) into combat against the red hoards sweeping down from the north. Ah they were the days And if young Weiderman is anything like his grandad, I wouldn't say no.
