Who’s better off’? Probably a question best answered by a Jesuit or philosopher. However I’m sure Pendlebury has few regrets about his career (other than not playing for his beloved Demons)!

Just 3? I bet he’s good at tennis and golf as well: lucky b******! And I bet he could even be good at bocce!!

Still around is big John Lord, volunteering as a tour guide for the MCC. And gee, not a John or a Peter or a Barry or even a Kevin among the boys named. The world has changed for the worst!?!

You are probably correct but there would be exceptions as you say: e.g. Steve O’Dwyer! 100 games is also apparently when they are offered MCC membership (full not restricted I’m informed). Certainly beats waiting 30+ years.

I believe there are some restrictions on the number of games played, however when I visited the locker room at AAMI park some yers ago I was intrigued to see so many names on each locker (not sure about locker48 though). I was on a quick tour and had no time to take too much notice. Still I’m not sure if you played just one or two games you’d be given the honour.

Please forgive me if I sounded flippant (I didn’t mean to) but it’s interesting talking to past players (as I sometimes do at lunches) the interest they take in their old number, and the players who wore it after him. And when a player is assigned a number he goes up to his new locker and on the outside is stencilled the names of all previous players who wore that number. It’s just an interesting sidelight to all the trappings of football.

Seriously, yes.

The interest in such minutia is part and parcel of being a real footy fan. Such trivia is quite interesting and to players it is often of cardinal importance. And of course to past players, who gets to wear their old number is often very important. “Doing the number proud”

One word description Nasty! At last, at last!

You may be correct, but it certainly can happen. Take Martin Pike for instance the wild boy of Melbourne, North Melbourne and Fitzroy. Picked up by Leigh Matthews to play for Brisbane after Matthews claimed that Pike having become a father had settled down. And of course he played in the Lions 2001/2/3 premiership teams OK just one example but I’m sure there are more. If Bennell can overcome his injury problems and has matured (many people do when they reach the age of 27 and have a family to consider) then us supporters are in for a treat!

Not unusual for a kid to support another team when drafted. Among others, Max was a Tiger supporter (and apparently celebrated their grand final win) and Nate Jones followed the saints. I think if young Yze did come to the Dees he’d realise how special his dad was and feel proud to continue the line.

I was a young lad in the late 1950’s when Melbourne was the powerhouse team, Barassi, Dixon, Adams et.al. all household names, revered, respected or loathed depending on team allegiance. (And bye the bye if you supported Hawthorn back then, you were considered a joke, as was that team: things do change!) However for all the legendary status of the above mentioned stars, Robert Flower is the Melbourne Football Club player I most admire. Why? Well as I said in a post above watching Flower was like watching a superbly gifted ballet dancer performing among clod hoppers, he had a flow to his movement unparalleled in the game. I’m glad I saw him. In 20, 30 years time kids of today will speak reverently of Max Gawn and (maybe) Clayton Oliver recalling their (possibly enhanced) super human efforts on the field but they will recall the feats of those players while maybe hanging out with their mates on the Robert Flower terrace at the MCG. He lives on!

Flower elevated playing football to an art form. He had the poise and grace of a ballet dancer, the dexterity of a gymnast. He was genuinely a one off!

Robert Flower himself. I well remember a particular game against Richmond where he gave Kevin Bartlett then stationed in the forward pocket an absolute bath.

So, is that him, the bald bloke? I remember Tingay well but he certainly has changed: his flowing blond locks rivaled those of Warwick Capper back then. And if I remember correctly he is one of those players to score a goal with his first kick! Against Fitzroy???

For this mad Melbourne supporter (me) seeing that mad Melbourne supporter (Harmes) living out his boyhood dream makes me very envious. From rookie to best 22: great story, and probably better to come!

Of course the club could save some money and just point the players towards You Tube where they will find many, many instructional videos devoted to the art and science of kicking an Australian Rules football.

How tall is Clarry? When seen standing next to Nick Riewoldt he doesn’t look that much shorter, and he certainly looks taller than “ the chief”! He’ll be a very very powerful lad when he grows up!

I believe this idea was discussed back when Joseph Gutnick was president. Why it didn’t go ahead, I’ve no idea.
