Had of Beveridge tagged Fyfe early instead of letting him roamed free, he wouldn't of had to innovate. That being said, Fremantle are beatable when they don't use Sandilands to their advantage.

Just an update on Josh Kelly... Played NEAFL on the weekend - again. 36 touches, 21 kicks and 3 goals. This is coming off of 39 touches, 12 tackles and a goal. Kid is in red hot form. I know he is contracted at years end, but so was Boyd. I wonder if GWS would be tempted by our first pick and Jeremy Howe?

I think a GUN player like Dangerfield or Boak would be of more value at present - as opposed to 2009. As good a player as Nathan Jones is, and as promising as Tyson often looks. They would be better players not having to carry the load. If we could get a Dangerfield/Boak type player, Nathan Jones could play second fiddle. At present Jones shoulders too much of the midfield.

Not really, Nat Fyfe was still a very good contested mark as a junior. He was apparently marking everything. Fyfe wasn't an outside 'cream on top' type player MFC had previously drafted. He was still very much a contested player, he just didn't quite have the body - which is probably why he went where he did. When it comes down to 'type', that is something MFC should of actually had - a type. To identify our needs. There was no point drafting outside skirt riders when we couldn't win a contested ball out of the centre, we were wooden spooners for a reason. MFC should've focused on fixing the basics.

Because Paul Roos inherited a rabble. I think Roos underestimated how bad of shape the MFC was in. He has a big job ahead of him, but let's not pretend it is an easy job. MFC was the most poorly run team in the history of the AFL. Things were never just going to turn around like they did at Port. Roos has the job ahead of him, and it will take time. IMO we will improve around 2018-2019, presently we just have too much drift wood on our list.

Fyfe and Judd are exceptions, generally you will get those. That being said, I'm not sure Fyfe would be the player he is at Fremantle - if he'd been drafted to Melbourne. It has taken him a few years to build his body, MFC didn't have a few years up our sleeve to sit and wait on a player. We needed mids, Fyfe was a forward early, and MFC wouldn't of been able to get the ball forward.

That is why it is important to draft blokes who can win the football, want to win the football, and have the ability to win the football consistently. Contested ball winning, mature bodied midfielders - with the ability to play AFL football. MFC thought they could get out of this mess by picking outside types who use the ball well. They just never considered how to get the ball out to those players. They were ahead of themselves. When a team consistently finishes last, maybe they should've been more worried about the basics of football - as opposed to the cream on the top.
-
The trouble is MFC taken undeveloped athletic ball users - ahead of mature bodied, contested ball winners. We did this at a time when we couldn't even extract the football out of the centre in our AFL games. So when these kids finally came into our side, they were coming into a side that still couldn't get the ball out of the centre. Outside types like Morton, Strauss, Blease, Toumpas, and even forwards like Watts and Cook, were always going to be up against it, because the supply was never there. Why? Because we neglected drafting mature bodied, contested ball winners to get the ball out in the first place. Had MFC understood the basics of football leading into these drafts - like Roos does - we would've had a completely different side, we wouldn't be in the position we are currently in. Paul Roos is having to go back, identify and rectify all the areas we previously got wrong. That is why we have Tyson, Vandenberg, Salem and Brayshaw. That is why Roos didn't take Kelly. As I've said previously, it's not rocket science.

I think McCartney did a fantastic job at the Bullies, and they are reaping the rewards. Beveridge has had a good start, but not tagging Nat Fyfe clearly cost them the game yesterday. Like many rookie coaches, Beveridge has a lot to learn. He shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as Paul Roos IMO.
-
Yeah, I agree. I think Roos is doing a fantastic job. He knows what he is doing. By the time Roos leaves, we will all be ready for a change anyway. But Roos is the man to get us back on track.
-
He would still be our best player even now. It is a real shame. We haven't had much luck landing quality mids.

There is 2 things I expect recruiters to focus on when drafting young kids.. 1. Can this kid play football? I want players to make an immediate impact. 2. Can this kid mentally handle the rigors of AFL football. Other characteristics that are integral - good inside a contest, balance, spread, the ability to harness aggression and control pace. It isn't rocket science to find the Luke Parkers, Ollie Wines, Angus Brayshaws, Dustin Martins, Steele Sidebottoms of the draft. Yet we drafted Toumpas, he doesn't tick any of those boxes, he had shot hips, and IMO (I know others see it different) he didn't look overly impressive in the nationals prior to getting drafted.

Thompson would've been a great player at MFC. He is welcome back.

Fix the Midfield and we'll rise very quickly!

ANB and Brayshaw are probably the type of guys you are looking for. Both dual sided players, position themselves well, smart footballers, they are the future - along with Salem. Hopefully we can build on those guys, we've really botched some drafts. Eventually fans will have to accept that we drafted ordinary players. The worst is behind us. -
Post Match Discussion, Pontification and Prayer

The loss is disappointing. The consistency is worse - consistently ordinary. Hawthorn were woeful today and pumped us by 100. That is our reality. The AFL can make of it what they will, but nothing has changed in my mind - MFC is a sub par list. -
I don't respect Brad Johnson or Dermie's knowledge of the game. Vandenberg wasn't struggling, he was the only bloke chasing.
-
I think the good players just worry about their own games. Ablett jr wouldn't read papers, he doesn't go on footy shows. It is rare to see Nat Fyfe in the media - only on game day. Swan wasn't big in the media when he was getting a kick. Pendles is only there game day. Watson was never in the media until the saga. Good players realise they need to get a kick, it doesn't matter what the media say. The media is like a dumb rock.
-
He is a good footballer. Underrated. I like the way he can push forward and become a target. Whoever drafted Vandenberg, take a bow.
-
Roos doesn't go out and tell the players to play kick to kick. At some stage, MFC fans will have to start thinking about our list - not the coaches.
-
That's not Paul Roos fault. Roos is doing a good job with this lot, they are just sub par football players. We've shanked our drafting the past decade, what do you expect Roos to do with this lot? The only players that resemble AFL players on our list - are those that Roos drafted. Vandenberg looks a level above most our other players most weeks.
-
Clarkson would be furious about Hawthorn today, they've been ordinary. We are just less than a football side. Even Dermott is trying hard not to bully us in commentary.
-
Local footy ain't that bad.

Put Toumpas in the middle, tell him to just 'have a go'. I want to see if this kid is as ordinary as he looks. Surely he has something to give, he went at pick 4, he looks out of his depth. Time to sink or swim kid.
