  1. You do realise that he's one dimensional, hasn't got great vision, isn't creative and doesn't run the lines ? He is what he is, which is a good ordinary footballer that gets the most out of himself. I actually respect the guy. He was a rookie draft pick that has gone on to win a club's Best & Fairest, which is a great achievement. But I'm aware of his limitations as a footballer. He needs to be relegated to a second string midfielder if we're to become any good. There's certainly a role for him, but while he and Jones are our best two we're crud.

  2. Agreed - I really like the way he's doing his stuff.....outside 'inner sanctum' observations only.....

  3. I can't believe people are fighting so hard to 'explain away' to disturbing discrepancy between Moloney's best games and his worst games. The guy goes missing when you need him the most. If he doesn't know that I am sure someone at the club will soon tell him. Oh, and comparing him to a dominant force like Judd and Bradman is disingenuous. They are a buttress, a pillar to rely on - Moloney is not that dominant force. He's just a 'battler' as Macca has stipulated. (Except in the clearances where he is near elite). Judd 2011 W: 28.4 L: 22.9 Judd 2010 W: 26.8 L: 27.1 Judd 2009 W: 26.9 L: 25.9

  4. The bottom line is the numbers are irrelevant to the fact that Moloney best against weak oppositions represent a yawning gap between to where he is invisible against quality oppositions. Its not the fact that players have variations in form. Hell, there human!! However Beamers variation is wide and low end of his performances are too frequent and too often against good opposition. And its not just measured by number of possessions. Blind Freddie could see his absence in big games and his touches are clearly ineffective and do not impact. Thats why he has been given the flat track bully reference. And you were making a comparison and a poor one with Bradman when you tried to allude he was a flat track bully. And your stats highlight the complete opposite with Bradman. For someone who has stated that "my expectations are always relatively high with regards to the footy club "Its clear you make exceptions for the individual. You need to stop trying to fudge the numbers to create an outcome.

  6. Followed by Moloney blazing away and the defense clearing it easily for another opposition goal. The fact that he''s our best performed midfielder is one of the reasons we finish so close to the bottom.

  7. A few problems with this post. The AFL didn't do anything for us -- we "earned" those pick with our win-loss records. Each of the first 3 picks might look bad, but they were the best options for mids at the stage of those drafts. The only player of note in 2003 after those named, would be David Mundy, picked around 30-40 and after Freo had already had 2 picks themselves. Rioli, Dangerfield & Grimes came after Morton, but not much else, and they aren't really mods (yet, at least). And if you could have foreseen Scully leaving back on draft day, then I'd appreciate next week's tattslotto numbers while you're at it.

  9. Disagree - he'll never be a nobody. He'll always be the little sod that chased a truckload of money and never lived up to the hype.

  10. WYL, the Prelim was harder on the Hawks than us, they were playing catchup most of the day & Johhny Fidge knocked out Mew I thinkl, nah it was someone else, Fidge got TDaniher in another game. But anyway The hawks were the ones who were tired after their 2nd half comeback onslaught. We were emotionally tired through the game with one or 2 players with physical injuries. Wanting to think we couldn't have beaten Carlscum is only emotional selfprotection. Dare to Win! Dees, learn it. Dare to Win.. We still haven't learnt it since Checker & Smithy.

  11. And now for something completely different ! Mark Twain visited our shores ( as well as India , New Zealand etc ) around the end of the 19th century and wrote a book about it . This book is out in the public domain . You could bookmark it and read it at your leisure . Cheers , Macca http://www.pdfbooks....THE_EQUATOR.pdf

  12. hey, guys, we always wait to be challenged, and no challenges have been issued... so, unless you want to try the demonland v demonology experiment again, february may pass without a forum game... I remember becoming exhausted just watching that demonland v demonology game... and demonland had to loan demonology so many players, it was like an intra-club practice match... I am not the suspicious type, but maybe if we don't crush the other forums in february this year, the firsts (because we are the seconds) may do well for a change... regards to all, rollo

  13. The fact is no one knows what the outcome of a MFC, CFC grannie would have been. Was a great trip down memory lane til the wet blanket killed it.

  14. Yep , in an ideal world we'd have a gun midfield with Sylvia in the forward line . But , right now , we're a fair way short of that gun midfield . I am confident however , that Mark Neeld will improve our midfield immeasurably . I'm hoping to see a much fiercer attack on the ball , more 1%ers ( blocking , shepherding etc ) , better cohesion and a far more direct style . Collingwood does hug the boundary a lot but out of the middle they are often very direct . A quick kick to CHF is what I see a fair bit from the Pies ( from centre clearances ) In fact , a number of the good sides have this practice . Cheers .

  15. Have to say, I disagree. Having heard Sheedy speak at a couple of functions, I think he is perfect for this role - a fact repeatedly acknowledged by Garry Lyon only a few days ago. Sheedy is past his best as a coach. In fact, he almost said as much at the most recent function I attended. However, he said his principal role is to build a club and get it a foot print in an area that currently has no interest in AFL. I can't think of anyone else in our game who's better suited to this role to be honest. He thinks out of the box and he is adept at promoting things. For instance, he was behind the Anzac Day clash between the Dons and the Pies. He initiated the Indigenous Round clash between the Dons and Richmond. And, in much the same way, he's doing a lot of good things out west in Sydney. In terms of community initiatives, he's making the NRL looking like the rank amateurs that they are. In short, his success depends more on off field things than finishing in the top 8 this year. I also think GWS is bench marking itself against Gold Coast, not Hawthorn, the Pies, Geelong, Carlton or even the Swans. And as to Tom Scully - I'm happy he's there. We got Mitch Clark as a result, a player who we really needed and who's already in our leadership group. We also got two compo picks, so let's forget about the little pr1ck.

  16. You still dont get it. It is not about how he performs in losses which I agree of course your numbers can be expected to drop. It is about his performances against the top teams compared to the bottom teams. If you want to look at it in averages look at him compared to some other mids and maybe you will finally get it. Moloney 2011 avg vs top 5 (16.8*) avg vs bottom 5 (29.6) variance (-12.8) Judd 2011 avg vs top 5 (23) avg vs bottom 5 (29) variance (-6) Swan avg vs top 5 (31.8) avg vs bottom 5 (31.2) variance (+.6) Ablett avg vs top 5 (32.7) avg vs bottom 5 (29.8) variance (+2.9) * taking out the Geelong game Moloneys avg is 19.2 still 10 possessions less.

  17. Well they will know just what he has to offer, hidden somewhere the last few years, and Craig in particular presumably knows why he couldn't cut it at the Crows. I would be extraordinarily surprised if Craig were to pull this one out of the hat, risking his own reputation in what is really one of his first acts at a new club, unless he was pretty damn certain that the "issues" we're well and truly buried, confined to the cellar.

  18. Could not think of a greater chalk and cheese analogy posted on this site! If we compare Beamer with Bradman it means Beamer get 70 touches a game against the weaker teams when he plays well and 30 touches when he plays badly. Beamer aint in that stratosphere. (FWIW. most Test batsman would give their right arm to retire with an average of 43.27) Beamer is not a great player. And Bradman had few off days. Well stated Big Red. And for those you surprised at Beamer not being in the leadership. Neeld has stated that he has picked the leadership group on what he has observed at the Club since he has been there. He removed Beamer. As well as Green, Davey and Rivers. Neeld does not rate Moloney as appropriate as a leader.

  20. Neeld should improve our midfielders given his role at Collingwood . Trengove will get better . Maybe Grimes and Sylvia will get some decent time in there . Lets face it , last years set up doesn't work so we need to be pro-active . Now that Grimes is co-skipper going into the midfield could be just his go . And I reckon Sylvia should play in the centre against the good sides . Putting everything else aside he can go hard at the ball when he wants to , he reads the play well , has very good disposal and has a bit of mongrel as well . Sylvia is often wasted on the HFF against the good sides . Cheers

  21. Love Beamer, but he averaged 9 touches less in losses than in wins. In 2010 he averaged 5 touches less. In 2010 and 2011 Jones averaged half a touch less in losses than in wins. BRFE is on the mark here. We are not burning him at the stake - we are asking more from arguably our best player.

  22. Nice to see Cale mentioned as our best in the Age article today and by the review in the training report. It's clearly not definitive and I'm not celebrating but it's a lot better than a negative report.

  24. typical melbourne supporter garbage. Hey, let's bag one of our only good players because he is not Chris Judd. I'd like to see you get rookie-drafted, overcome osteitis pubis, and become vice-captain/best and fairest winner/9th in the brownlow. ot to mention he is one of the toughest blokes in the league, which is a long-covete trait of many a melbourne supporter. IMHO it as an absolute disgrace that he has been shafted from the leadership group, makes me wonder WTF they are smoking.Neitz, White, Bruce, Green, Yze, Johnstone, McDonald.. it has always been the same with 'supporters' like you - no appreciation whatsoever for what they have done, just what they haven't done. There are about 6 blokes on the list that are doing their job, and Beamer is one of them. Why don't you make a thread about one of the other 35

  25. Once again Freak you have made a "FAIR" and accurate, non-biased assessment of Jordan in my opinion. To add further, I believe he is not nearly as much like Pendles as some think here. Yes I have heard him talking about how he would like to model his game around the Collingwood great's but the closest thing Gys has to him is height. Oh, and they both play in the midfield.... Gys seems to have a great ability to read the play from stoppages and finding the ball. He has great hands in close and also seems like he can take a good grab out in front. He has plenty of time on his side to build a big frame which will only help his ball winning ability and his marking. Defensively he could work a lot harder. Needs to add that to his game which should come with improved aerobic fitness. The only question mark for him is his disposal. Doesn't have a fantastic technique, therefore doesn't have a great kick. Let's see what happens. I will say that he is a player worth persevering with. Only my humble opinion... (Maybe I should have just gone with the rest and said, "He WILL be a STAR)."

  26. Oh, Watts needs to improve on the ten good games he played last year?! He needs to improve his physicality?! You get frustrated by the MFC's 'soft' supporters? I get frustrated with those supporters who shift the goalposts for this team and its players. Watts had a good 2011, a number of supporters didn't think it would be as good as it was. But here we are and they can't see the forest for the trees. Why don't we keep the fire on the feet of those who actually didn't live up to expectations last year: Green, Davey, Petterd, the midfield as a whole, Moloney against decent teams, etc. This desire to keep Watts 'dancing' (that is a reference to shooting bullets at his feet) is getting tiresome for all concerned. Let's see how he reacts to the new FD and the preseason and actually wait until April to cast judgement.

  27. Lol elite is best of the best. Saying there is 40 elite players in the comp is diluting the term "elite." Best of the best- it is impossible for 40 players to have this status- I'd say you chose the elite from a selection of the best players- and you'll be looking at a total of around 10 out of a selection of 80-100 players. I think even at 10 we're pushing it.
