The Age understands that Gardner, who took over as chairman in 2004, is planning to stand down at the end of the year and could be forced out beforehand.

While Samuel has little interest in the Melbourne presidency, there is no indication from Argus, despite his lifelong support of the club, that he has any interest in joining the Demons board.

He'll go when he feels he needs to go, and he won't let his ego get in the way of the success of our club.

I agree. I reckon if he is presented with a viable opposing ticket, he would leave without resistance.

It's getting to a point now where I honestly can't see us surviving. They'll always be a Melbourne, but I can seriously see a completely new brand, team and direction. Much like how the Victoria Titans turned into the Victoria Giants in the NBL a few years ago, although that failed miserably.

A trademark ( or so it seems to me ) of Gardners term so far is that when positions change and people come and go its done with minimum acrimony. I would imagine he would handle his own changeover similarly.

You're right. I just wonder how much of a difference it really makes to have the media on your back 24/7 look at that "we're worse than Fitzroy" thing that Carlton guy said. So what? Even if it's true, what good will it do to create a huge ruckus about it. The only thing I'm really concerned about is that the Media tends to exacerbate any infighting that may go on during situations like this - and that's the last thing a dying club like us needs.
