Robert Walls delists a few Demons

THE RETIRING TYPES

MELBOURNE

Depending on who the new coach is, there could be a mass exit from the Demons. They have nine players who are 30-plus and for a team near the bottom, the temptation will be to clean out. Expect to see Byron Pickett, Clint Bizzell, Nathan Brown, Adem Yze, Daniel Ward and perhaps Ben Holland pack their bags.

Not much argument from me. Only problem is, if this is a fairly shallow draft, how do we replace all of them. Seven picks in a crap draft is probably not a great strategy!

Doesn't Yze have another year on his contract? Can't see us paying him out, absolutely pointless because the amount will still count towards our cap. Mind you if this was his last year of his contract then I'd be all for it...

Warren, we'll have two promoted from the rookie list in Bode and Neaves and hopefully we'll have 3 picks in the top 22 picks so it won't be too bad.

Another superbly well-informed snipe piece from Robert Walls. At least have the work ethic to do a bit of research and look into who is actually contracted next year, Walls. Perhaps he should look at joining them in the retirement home, or does he have a year to run on his media contracts too?

:D

I think Walls' problem is that he is stupid enough to think that Adem Yze would forfeit his contract for next year and retire. That would never happen in a million years.

The others are absolutely gone. Pickett shouldn't play again for our club. He got his 200 despite being unfit and overweight. Time to go.

Not disagreeing with you Jaded, but nor should Yze walk out on a contract. I certainly wouldn't if I was him! Quite rightly, I'd guess Yze is preparing his body for one strong final season.

I think he has more to offer than what we've seen the past couple of seasons quite seriously. I'd love him to bow out after a season more akin to his first decade at the club where his consistency and skills were a feature of his game.

We'd all love to see him change his spots, but a leopard never does.

Whatever happens, I hope that the new coach selects him only if his form warrants it. He is no longer an automatic starter at Melbourne.

Yep, that's fair enough. I don't think any of us want players occupying a spot in the 22 simply because they are old favourites. I just feel that a fit and firing Yze can offer something to the team, particularly in the skills department. The number of times I tore my hair our last night after Melbourne turnovers left me looking like Christopher Lloyd. I didn't follow our preseason closely so I'm not sure what they focused on in particular, but I hope there's a large emphasis on ballwork in preparation for season 2008.

Its going to very much a time for a BIG spring clean. Forget any aspirations for serious finals next year or even 09. Its time to seriously , well if not rebuild...do some major reno's !! This will require a coach who has done all this before..(successfully ...that means flags ) ..luckily one's available.

As to Walls.. well.. ...many have already done better justice to this fellow...lol

He's not big on realities , let alone facts.

yes Melbourne are having a clearout...he got that right...takes an Einstein doesnt it ?? lol

Maybe I'm just naive, but I really don't think that Melbourne need such a big clean-out.

I don't think it should be underestimated just how much of an influence a good coach will have on this list.

that may be so but we still have too much dead wood on our list.

a 9 player clean up would be adequate and very necessary.

over the next 3 years, half of the current list will no longer be playing afl. thats a fact.

the problem with MFC...well one of them. Is we have quite a few players who need to move on ( for the betterment of teh club as a whole ) .Some are simply on the 'other ' side of their best days of their careers. Some just arent going to amount to more than 'adequate' players.

The only problem is, where do you get nine players to replace them?

considering it is likely we will lose the next 2 weeks (we will 100% lose next week anyways...) we will have a priority pick.

that means we could have pick 3, 18,20,36, 52, 68...we could certainly use all those picks...with 4 picks in the top 40 you would assume you could get some serious talent with those picks...

so 6 draftees, 1 PSD pickup (best available uncontracted player), 1-2 rookie elevations (Bode and Neaves are genuine chances...atleast one will be elevated), and 1 trade...

i assume we'll trade in a players, because i would include Jamar and Miller as part of my 9 delistings only if we could find a suitable trade for them, which will mean either an extra draft pick or player.

Who knows, a high profile player might be traded (bruce maybe) which would see us gain an extra 2 draft picks perhaps or a pick and a player.

Either way, it certainly isnt unrealistic to bring in 9 players in 1 season. most years most clubs would make 7 changes to their list...9 isnt out of the ordinary, yet it is highly necessary.

I thought priority picks are based on more than one years performance?? If so we wont get a PP

Disagree.

Yze was a fantastic hardworking highly skilled player with a good dose of courage. He throughly deserved his AA in 2002.

Then he changed.

Having said that, I don't think he has the interest to change back.

if we dont win another game then we do get a PP...it will be AFTER the first round.

For example:

If we win another game- pick 4, 19

If we dont win another game- pick 2, 18, 20

in terms of draft, we will be in a much better position if we dont win another game...

(btw carlton's PP will be BEFORE the 1st round if they dont win another game...i.e. pick 1,3,19...this is bc they have had less than 5 wins for 2 years running

I don't think you're right.

Awhile back, I had a flip through one of those AFL liftouts with team lists and a brief profile of all players at each Club. It listed the delistings from the previous year, and from memory the average was ~4.

I'm not sure how you can say that bringing in nine players is not out of the ordinary, and I can't see it happening. Seven would be huge.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
