PS: @Adam The God see what I meant earlier this week when I said losing today would undo our efforts vs Gold Coast?

On the field we took a massive step backwards.

Off the field, how many do you think we'll get to the Brisbane game next week off the back of that?

I'll go to Casey only if the canteen dont run outta food!

Yeah he's come from Geelong where there is an underlying culture of competing. Coaches don't need to spend too much time wondering what attitude the players will turn up with week to week. He'll quickly learn that it's a big part of the job here and he can trust nothing. People will rubbish that comment but anyone who thinks the MFC generally competes with high intensity week in week out is watching with rose coloured glasses. And that's not just now but most of the last 30 years.

I suspect despite Petracca not playing last week, given how unpopular he was with the other players they were probably fired up to give it to the Suns physically and kind of send a message to him. It is back to normal service resumed with the players inexplicably leaving the intensity at home this week.

Pressure ratings pretty much decide every game of football played at AFL level. IF pressure is even, then talent and execution decide it. Our guys again seemed to think they have the talent to overcome bringing low intensity. They don't and nor do most other teams.

The players thought talent would win the day today and got it straight in between the eyes.

I’m beginning to think the Langford might be more Andrew Embley and less Patrick Cripps

Beautiful skills but doesn’t get his own ball much

Not a knock, just an observation. And I know other folks have called his lack of interest in contact earlier

just watched his presser

i thought it was very instructive

Kingy questioned whether we were being unconditional in our approach. said some of our players not mature enough to deal with the demands of being a true professional

He'll let the players know whats what during the week i reckon

we'll be a different team against the Lions. we won't dish up that rubbish again i'm sure

God you read that well, I didn’t get half of that from it.

Fully Agree. I wish you could find those stats on the AFL app. I haven’t seen them before.

Would be interested to know what the pressure was at throughout the various quarters and compare it to last week.

The pressure stats are published by @WheeloRatings in the Stats File thread every week.

But Essendopes young ungs were up to the task?? Tsatsis has hardly played but was phenomenal today!

Picket. You sometimes come out with some good stuff and the real issues. Bombers kids were that far in front of ours it was crazy. They also hunted the ball whereas a few of ours were a bit TIMID. Saw Lindsay, Langford, Windsor and L.Picket shirk it a few times.

We covered a few cracks in last couple of games due to Gawn, Kozzie and Steele dominating. Whilst these 3 players were our best today, they weren't brilliant, so the others needed to front up but unfortunately, they couldn't or are not good enough.

I hope King makes a statement after that game and ensures those that continually let us down are dropped.

Agree!🧐

Staying at brother in laws at Bridport

Played barnbougle dunes on Friday in gale force wind and hail

Our game today was worse than that experience

Playing lost farm on Monday - 21 , sunny - which will be akin to 25.9.21.

Lost for words, a terrible effort from too many.

And dealing with histerical bombers supporters, [censored].

I was able to mutter to Essendon fanaticasises ( made up word combining fans ...fanatics...and fantasisers) that they are bound to win one in every 18

But that was a really horrible performance by us . especially the last quarter where we appeared to just give in.

at 3/4 time bomber fans in front of me yelled come on bombers embarras them.....I said to him they already have..... Hoping for a last quarter fight....... didnt happen ....... we were humiliated.

I disagree.

Sure, the crowd might be down on what it would have been, but on-field it's all part of the journey and it won't be the only blip this year.

Football isn't linear. Today wasn't a backward step. It was a paethic performance and King was thoroughly outcoached, but it doesn't detract from our three wins IMO.

In fact, I'd view today as an important learning step for this group, including the coaches.

Because this game plan as it stands right now and as our list stands right now, is very easy to counter. We're not the dominant stoppage force we once were, so when sides get on top there and mix this with ball retention (Hawthorn will do this against is too you'd think), the system and our list doesn't have an answer.

I'll be there

if supporters can't handle one poor performance from a devloping team then they're just as pathetic as our performance today

Agree wholeheartedly with this. The term “supporter” is oftentimes misused because a true supporter wouldn’t base their attendance on the most recent result, even if it’s a substantial loss to the bottom side. A true supporter would make a point of attending the next match because of this loss. This is when the support is most needed.

Yes we were the worse team on the day but we also got completely out coached. Essendon had a completely different game plan to nullify us and Steven king wasn’t quick enough or experienced enough to react. We still played like [censored] though. JVR a huge worry for me

Yeah, but our young blokes have been great most of the year. That’s my point. They can’t get up for every week. They need multiple preseasons, and more experience until they can do it every week.

I’ll give you some advice

Don’t argue with an id10t

Lost farm is far superior to dunes regardless of the weather. It’s a proper masterpiece, the course raters have it wrong.

We have a very slim chance.

We could've been 4-1 coming high on confidence and a established way of playing footy.

Hard to see us bringing our best next week. They will be psychologically scarred after today.

I don't nessacerilly disagree, but I also don't think many saw the Carlton or Gold Coast wins coming either.

Will be a big test for King and Co to see how they can turn things around.

This loss is the flip side to the wins we've pulled in over the past few weeks.

We have a developing team and all asked for a more attacking game style, which has been embraced and delivered results faster than expected.

When the game style works, we expose our opponents and look like superstars.

When we don't win enough of the footy and/or execute well enough when we have it and the game style falls apart, we get exposed and it looks alot like a lack of effort.

I think at the start of the season, we all expected something of a roller-coaster ride, which is somewhat the thing we're getting. Honestly, I hate the losses and I've lost patience with them and can't tollerate them week after week, because of the history we had 2006 - 2017, but I think we need to accept that looses like today are going to happen.

It's now about how we respond.

No doubt binners stat's file will dissect this [censored] show in the poddy, but what the stats won't explain is why our playing group came to this game without any mental preparation and accuity that wins you games of footy. Looked to me like they were here for the after party and not the event.

Just another abject embarrassment for the club for the third season in a row at this venue, which may just define the rest of our season.

Welcome to our world Kingy.

Agree with alot of the above.

I think we relied alot on Melksham firing last week to get us over the line. When he got hobbled early, we didn't really have a forward that looked like taking the game on. Didn’t help that we delivered poorly into forward 50 and let them keep picking it off. But I actually think good, contested forwards would see that happening and somewhat adjust for it.

It's not just Roo that concerns me, I also think Mihocek has equally underdelivered in the past few weeks. I'm not sure that dropping either of them is the answer though. I'd be looking to bring in either AJ, Kentfield or maybe even The Moose for someone with a bit more bash and crash, contested style. Could be wrong, but I suspect Melksham will sit out next week with that ankle.

Was always going to be hard to make changes from the winning team we had last week, but as much as I'm a huge fan of him, I would have picked T Mac against Essendon. Leaving out Heath, Kentfield and/or AJ was also something of a mistake in my mind.

The season will be a rollercoaster…. Just jump On Board and enjoy the ride. There’s every chance we beat the lions next Sunday.

We were just outcoached.

High pressure and speed is how we beat Carlton and Gold Coast. Scott just took the heat out of it and played a high uncontested possession game that exposed our lack of pace in TMac and Lever.

King was exposed for lack of tactical nous. He will learn one would expect

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show.
