Not a perfect game from him but Latrelle is the real deal

Also Harry Sharp stocks are up

Latrelle is well ahead of schedule for a first afl season player. Heโ€™ll likely gas out later in the year, but heโ€™s proved himself to be a weapon. Very likely to be a big part of the team in the next 5 years.

At least I can sing along to that one!

Your first live match in 20 years and arenโ€™t you glad you came?!?!

Awesome that you made your way down to the bedlam that is the front of our bay after a win. Especially that win! And no, I wasnโ€™t crying, I just had something in my eye.

Football commentators and writers go on and on about how the brownlows a midfielder awards and umpires can't see past them. Then Max Hatzoglou "Herald Sun" get the chance to give the votes on Sunday and leaves Max out of the votes.

What a pair of consecutive wins. As enjoyable a couple of days at the MCG as I can remember.

Pressure and tackling exceptional. If anything it got better as the game went on.

There's a real joy to the way we're playing at the moment, which I have to say, is such a contrast with the last two years.

Even the player announcements at the start of the game (which I think is an American borrowing we can probably do without) was just blokes being silly and having fun.

The other thing that stood out to me was how clean and effective we were at centre bounces. For so long - I think even at times in 2021 - something seemed dysfunctional about how we dealt with Gawn's ruck dominance. Yesterday, a midfield rotation of Steele, Pickett, Sparrow and Windsor dominated (at least to my eyes) centre bounce stuff against a rotation of Anderson, Rowell, Powell, Graham and Miller.

You have salty people like Brereton on SEN already trying to move the goalposts using Judas and Humphrey as some sort of excuse or reason when 2 quality players like Rowell and Walter replaces them. You could literally hear the gnashing of the teeth as he was forced to acknowledge we outplayed them.

The brain rot in Brereton is real. No wonder Fox got rid of him. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Started hearing major foot steps.

It was fascinating especially in last quarter:

  • gcs player running to space to mark or collect loose ball

  • dees player gives chase but is a meter or more away

  • dees fans roar like there is no tomorrow

  • hearing the roar gws player gets nervous and fumbles

  • hearing the roar demon player closes in and pounces

  • demon fans roar even louder

  • ball up or free

  • implied pressure intensifies

the dees crowd was amazing and suspect it will be bigger in future and our wins bode well for membership numbers

Great win.

On the right track but can we chill out over finals talk? People getting ahead of themselves again

I might have missed them, but had there been many posts seriously discussing finals?

This is the first post Iโ€™ve seen mentioning finals

Here is the Stats File post for the game:

@WheeloRatings, so appreciate you going to the effort to analyse and publish this each week. Awesome stuff.

Some interesting stats and thoughts from such:

  • Player ratings show elite 4 quarter effort by Steele, Maxy, Kozzi and just under elite Tommy Sparrow. This is our senior players showing the way for our young talent. Koz and Sparrow are only 24 & 25, but they'e surely playing like they've won a flag.

  • So many stats pointing to the dominance of Max and the midfield. Stats show why Hardwick said Max was easily best on ground

  • Centre bounce attendances show Petty played an important role. Max had his lowest CBAs in the short season to date, giving Max important load relief. Petty also took some important, strong up-field marks for our super-fast transition. Yet his player rating was really poor. @WheeloRatings, why is this so?

  • Perhaps Petty's CBAs provide insight to Kingy's coaching philosophy to focus on speed, athleticism and endurance. Could it be Petty, Kentfield & Heath are playing for the same position?

  • The very low hand ball metres gained surprised me. Perhaps there were a lot of backward passes in this game?

  • How good is it to see Dees 190 pressure rating in the 4th quarter - highest of the 4 quarters in the game. We didn't see that in 2023 or '24, just fade outs. Isn't it strange we have the same head of high performance yet the team has 2021-like confidence - cockiness even - to run over top of teams in the second half.

Another example of a player that had no confidence last year.

King has bought him and numerous others to life.

Not sure whether he is just a dead set moron, or too many head knocks. Perhaps both?

First of all, I would like to thank everyone giving a like or clap. Thank you.

I agree with everyone's comments. It is good and refreshing watching the Demons play. Players seem to have confidence with each other and playing a brand of football that is wonderful to watch. More than likely there will be hiccups during the season but they seem to be a team learning and adapting on the fly.

As it has been mentioned we are slow first quarter, but King always makes adjustments and the cogs slot in and all is well. I am not sure if he makes the adjustments on individual players or adapts to the opposition. Whatever the case king makes the right decisions.

Hoping we continue with the same game plan and we beat Essendon and Richmond and shake up Brisbane in between. Hope yes. Over confidence and lack of opposition respect can be suicidal.

At the start of the year, I told a life member that I was confident this year. Maybe not win the flag but have a great season.

Go the Demons.

Your welcome for giving the clap

Talking of crowd noise.

There was zilch for GCS in play or after goals at least that is how it seemed from the Southern Stand and their Temu cheer squad was at the city end.

I watched a few minutes of the replay to see how it sounded on tv. The broadcasters are doing thier covid thing of inserting fake crowd cheering/noise.

No wonder they have a poor track record interstate - their is no-one cheering for them and they have to endure the roar of op fans.

It will cost them games ๐Ÿ˜ and yesterday it cost them momentum but not the game!

You missed the posts about finals because they donโ€™t exist.

Another comment on crowd noise.

I haven't been a fan of player songs after a goal but love it at the ground especially when the crowd can sing along. Sweet Caroline gets quite a rendition so it is great when Sharp goals.

Adds terrific atmosphere.

Our support has been criticised for a long time for being too quiet

This season has shown we can cheer as loud as anyone when we have something to cheer about. Goodys contest and stoppage game plan was effective but it was very boring to watch. We now have reason to jump out of our seats to yell and holler.

Seriously, the last 2 games have been so enjoyable to watch. Long may this continue.

I know this is easy to say now but from the go I thought we would win that game. I have to admit Sharp is playing well and Kolt is playing well in a defensive mode. For the life of me I did not see Laurie on the ground and I was looking. It said he had 40% game time.

They just had that annoying wooden clacking sound but that disappeared in the second half

watched the second half on replay before bed last night

we were even more dominant on the screen than we were at the ground

left a minimum 7 goal win get away from us

they were very lucky they were so accurate

If they were lining up for goal at the other end (Ponsford end) and we didnโ€™t see it, we had to watch for their cheer squadโ€™s reaction to know if it went through or not. It was a strange situation because usually we know itโ€™s a goal by the cheering.

the 24k that came out to see us on easter sunday are the hardcore

I'm going to brag od. I tipped us in the Game Day thread and took a bit of flak for my optimism; all good-naturedly.

But I wasn't optimistic enough predicting a win by only 7 points!

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourneโ€™s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time atย Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
