The Sam Marshall Thread

Featured Replies

In light of the Draft, Trade and Cheese Board being on hiatus I've put this here,

Might be an interesting one to watch

RIVALS EYE YOUNG LION

BRISBANE premiership midfielder Sam Marshall will wait until later into the season to make a call on his contract as Melbourne clubs circle him.

Marshall hasn't played in the Lions' start to this season, being overlooked for selection after featuring in last year's Grand Final win over Geelong.

The second-year Lion is out of contract this season as he was drafted at pick 25 in the 2024 draft – outside the top 20 that enforces three-year standard deals for draftees.

He played 11 games last year, including the final 10 of the season, and was a part of Brisbane's second premiership in its back-to-back triumphs.

Victorian clubs have been closely watching Marshall given his links to the state. He was a Brisbane Academy product but spent the final years of his schooling at Melbourne Grammar on a scholarship. – Callum Twomey

A big yes from me.

Midfield talent is something thst needs to be high on our priority list alongside some tall defenders.

After the Freo game it’s very obvious we need better/more mids. We aren’t a club that’ll attract big name players especially now.

Any players like Marshall, Zakowtelsky Jed Walters, Gruzewski (yes last three a key forwards) but the point is they’re more likely to get games with us than their current club. Players that a definitely good enough but unfortunately are behind the pecking order.

Exactly the type of player we should target assuming we miss out on the big recruits like Humphrey and Butters.

Wouldn't mind having a crack at Harrison Oliver from GWS as a competative medium defender as well

Won't be a popular name but Tsatas will be free to a good home, never had a proper crack at it

Worth a swing for a late pick or as a delisted free agent

I'm not convinced his much chop either but Brad Scott hasn't done him any favours

I do think we should target 20-23 year olds to add to our core group.

Darcy Wilson hasn't resigned and Saints are worried he will want $ amount they can't afford. Sam Marshall wants games, Jed Walter wants games, Jedd Busslinger wants games, Harry Hustwaite wants games. All yes's from me.

Going to be a few players of his quality available from Brisbane and Suns over the next few years (Jed Walter and Jake Rodgers are couple of names that come to mind)

Hopefully we can be the beneficiary of them being on the periphery of the QLD super teams!

Internet rumours suggest Wilson is a die-hard Roo fan and wants to go there at the end of the year.

Not just a supporter but the great nephew of North Melbourne/Tarrawingee great, Mick "The Galloping Gasometer" Nolan.

Yes I heard that. Not sure if it’s true but he’d be a good buy for the Roos

I’m a YES for Sam Marshall as long as the Lions were reasonable either way their asking price.

Great isn’t it, they’re all paying for and stacking up on champions and won’t be able to hold onto their also really good players that aren’t considered champions.

Sam Marshall is a bit slow, and was reaching out to find a running coach recently. Got 1 kick in the Grand Final. Pass for me.

At the right price I'm all for it.

Great delivery player and I think he'd fit the King model.

Not the quickest but has a great tank and will run all day. Huge workhorse.

it's very early days to see what sort of player he will develop into, but i seem to recall jaspa fletcher was the player comparison he got at the time prior to drafting

i find it hard to believe that a highly-ranked academy kid who is only two years in, and already a premiership player, will be shipped out, particularly given that the bears are likely to lose zac bailey to a mega-money deal from the likes of the crom

it would be funny / not funny if he was traded for more than it cost the bears to pick him in the first place

I have had many sessions at The Plough back when I lived in Wangaratta.

Such a classic old school type pub with a fair bit of History.

Believe the Nolan's did own it at one stage.

No on the last two,

yes on marshall, has shown plenty, he's a second year player in the deepest squad in the comp, will get opportunities and if it's not him you wouldn;t say no to a reville type if he fell out either looking to cash in as a mature age recruit whos played only on 1yr deals, would add hardness to our young squad
