Salem 200

Featured Replies

Shocked that there hasn’t been a topic started for this significant milestone tomorrow.

Since being drafted there haven’t been many more consistent contributors to the football club.

Beautiful user and such a smart footballer whose toughness is often overlooked. Will always be remembered for setting the tone early in the 2021 GF.

On the human side, he’s always one of the first to make an effort with kids at training with a wink and a chat. Doesn’t sound like a lot but always makes my son feel a million bucks.

A great footballer, human being and servant of the MFC. Go well tomorrow Salo.

Disappointing that there is not even a decent write up on the MFC website..

Well done Christian Salem on reaching your 200 game milestone, a very skilful and reliable player for Dees, good luck tomorrow Salo we all hope that you have a great game.

We usually go ok in major player milestone games, long may it continue.

Hopefully he has his kicking boots on tomorrow.

@Ghostwriter can we expect the banner to make a mention?

Of course! We never miss a milestone. And because Tmac’s not playing, Salo gets the whole front of the banner for his 200th.

One of my favourites and one I always defend when he gets criticised on here.

On a team that rarely kicks well he is a shining light.

I remember his debut clearly, played half forward and his beautiful skills combined with his toughness were obvious

Big part of our flag core

On one side it should have all the congratulatory messaging, the other side a none too subtle jab to Damien Barrett that reads “Premiership medals: Salem 1, Kelly 0”

Unfortunately one side has to have the advertising of one of our sponsors/partners, some exceptions are made such as ANZAC eve and KB. But I like your idea nonetheless 😊

One of my absolute favourite Demons of the last however many years

Superior skills to anyone in our side, goes when it’s ’his turn’, and unquestionably one of the key players when we were successful

Hope he plays at least another three or more seasons in red and blue

Tomorrow’s banner has a huge pic of Salo and the wording is…

CHRISTIAN SALEM

200 SUPERB GAMES

A TRUE MFC SUPERSTAR

Now promise not to tell anyone 😁

Iirc your son’s favourite player was Nibs and upon his departure Salo became his #1. Your son’s fave player game is great, btw.

@Fritta and Turner recently said Salo’s nickname should be Raymond, as in, Everybody Loves… and it’s true. Salo is by far and away the most popular player among the group. Everyone is friends with him and there’s no one he doesn’t get on really well with. He’s got a playful, fun personality, he’s a prankster and he’s really witty. But at the same time he’s a loyal friend and a really sincere person.

We’re blessed to have him at our club.

I remember when his shot on goal sunk the Bumbers. Roos said he wasnt at all worried as Salo was the best kick in the side.

Christian’s footy career has had its up and downs. Challenges with thyroid related illness and significant injury have delayed this deserved milestone.

As others have alluded to here during his rookie first season. When he auspiciously kicked the winning goal, with 19 seconds to go in Round 13 2014 against the dons.

Clearly BOG in the opening quarter of the ‘21 Grand Final. Repeatedly driving the Demons into attack, completely dominating his opponent and delivering the ball lace out to his forwards.

Had the pleasure of meeting Christian with my daughter at the Sunday afternoon celebrations after the Grand Final. Found him to a personable, friendly young bloke with a twist of ironic humour.

Congratulations Christian. Demon Premiership Champion tried and true.

Many years ago, when they arranged phone calls for junior members Salem called my little demon... it wasn't the most flowing conversation (not C.S.s fault), but he has been on our radar ever since.

Just such a natural with the ball, maybe makes it look a bit too effortless.

I will be making a rare visit to the game tomorrow, with my little demon (who's now taller and too invested for his own good). One of the things I look forward to, watching live at the ground, is to not hear a certain commentator butcher his name; surely after 200 games a memo might have made its way to the studio?

@Ghostwriter while we're talking banners... why don't the cheer squads lift the banner to show the crowd, drop it, rotate, lift again to show different area of crowd... etc anymore?
Do they just not make them like they used too? Or did the Filth's 2018 GF banner scare everyone into not raising any earlier than needed?

Edit - I sit on the opposite side of the ground to where the players run out, so can never see what front of banner says

Has been a terrific player for our club from the get go , great skills ,balance, never fumbles, involved alot in scoring chains , puts his body on the line, sticks tackles, breaks tackles, one of a few who can hit up a leading forward lace out or pin point a risky 50 m bullet through the corridor, he was the bloke you wanted to have the pill in his hands when your 5 points down or up with a minute left . I would of liked to see him play in the midfield more to maximize his inside 50s and having shots on goal. He stayed loyal to the club and a true melbourne demon. Well done on a great 200 christian.

What a great player he has been!!!!and he gets unfairly criticized, and anybody that criticizes Christian should be ashamed of themselves

As with every other aspect of footy, things change. There are several reasons for no longer raising, dropping, rotating then raising again (a “show”). These days there’s so much going on and so many people on the ground at the time. The grounds staff have a hard time making sure of everyone’s safety.

Timing is another reason. Everything is planned down to the minute. For example the umpires come out at say 3:03pm and that means we raise the banner at 3:06pm, if our boys are running out first. There are hefty fines if we’re late in leaving the ground after raising.

The weather’s another factor. Marvel is about the only stadium where a show might be considered.

It would be good if they could show the front of the banner on the big screen.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
